The Big Burn American Experience
In the summer of 1910, an unimaginable
wildfire devoured more than three million acres across the Northern Rockies,
confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service
with a catastrophe that would define the
agency and the nation’s fire policy for the
rest of the 20th century and beyond. THE
BIG BURN provides a cautionary tale of
heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed,
hubris and, ultimately, humility in the face of
nature’s frightening power.

By the dawn of the nineteenth century,
the most deadly killer in human history,
tuberculosis, had killed one in seven of all
the people who had ever lived. The disease
struck America with a vengeance, ravaging communities and touching the lives of
almost every family. While it shaped medical
pursuits, social habits, economic development and public policy, TB and its impact are
poorly understood.

doctors care for terminally ill patients. In
conjunction with Gawande’s new book, Being

NOVA Colosseum
– Roman Death Trap
NOVA explores the world’s great buildings
in three new episodes this month, beginning
with Rome’s Colosseum, a monument to
Roman imperial power. Its harmonious proportions concealed a highly efficient design
and advanced construction methods. In its
arena, tens of thousands of gladiators, slaves,
prisoners and wild animals met their deaths.
Now archaeologists and engineers team up
to re-create the ancient Roman technology.

of photography in shaping the identity of
African Americans opens a window into the
lives of black families, whose experiences
