The children and their parents have already started learning about how the Bread of Life deepens our bond with Christ and with all members of the Body of Christ, especially the poor. All parishioners, as members of our local Body of Christ, are invited to keep our children and all preparing to receive the Church’s sacraments in your prayers. As usual, all are welcome to choose to pray for one First Communicant in particular. You can choose a snowflake with the child’s first name on it, and hold them up in your daily prayers until Easter. Out of respect for the children’s privacy and safety we will no longer be including full names and photos on the snowflakes. Legacy of Faith: Thank you to about 850 families who have now made some commitment to our Legacy of Faith capital campaign, raising our pledge total to over $1.8 million. We’re very close to reaching the $2.0 million goal we need to make our mortgage payments over the next few years. If we haven’t heard from your family yet, a pledge or even one-time gift of any size can make a difference. Next Sunday, we will be learning more about this year’s Catholic Services Appeal. The CSA Foundation is an independent corporation that funds specific archdiocesan programs. Some of those programs are directed to help us provide support, training, and new ideas for parish staff as we serve you. Some reach across parish boundaries, providing service parishes often can’t handle on their own, such as our network of hospital and prison chaplains. Some programs provide for the cost of educating our future priests. Thank you for prayerfully considering how you can help us reach our goal for this year’s Catholic Services Appeal. Fr. Jesus was doing something different. His teaching was new, fresh, surprising. The Jewish people were used to the teaching style of their scribes, the scholars who interpreted the Scriptures and taught the corresponding laws. The scribes were legalists by trade, who focused on what was required of the Jews based on the holy writings. For them, the law was dominant. But when Jesus showed up in the synagogue and began to teach, he was dominant. As the incarnate Son of God, he spoke with an authority that was greater even than the religious laws. And just in case those who heard him doubted his legitimacy, Jesus proved his authority by more than words; he cast out evil spirits. When the people witnessed Jesus commanding "even the unclean spirits" and saw that these spirits obeyed him, they were "amazed" at this "new teaching with authority." What our Jewish ancestors experienced is recorded for us to bolster our own faith. Although we were not there to see these events unfold, if we meditate on the reality of today's Gospel story we will also be astonished and amazed. Jesus is more than a teacher. He is more than a kind man with an attractive philosophy. Jesus has power over the spiritual world! His authority over us is real. And he exercises this authentic authority for our own good. He has the power to do away with evil and to set us free, both through his teachings--passed on to us in the Bible and in the Church--and through his action in our lives. We only need to follow his lead. © 2015 Liturgical Publications Inc. february 1, 2015 · page 5 faith formation First Eucharist Rite of Enrollment This weekend we celebrate the Rite of Enrollment for our 230 children who are preparing to receive Jesus in Holy Communion during the Easter season.
