Blessing of Candles
Monday, February 2, 2015 at all the Masses
The Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas Day
commemorates the “Presentation” of Jesus in the temple and
the purification of Mary 40 days after His birth.
Candles have been blessed this day since the 11th century. The
Blessing of Candles will take place at the 7:00am, 9:00am and
7:30pm Masses.
Candles for home use will be available in the sacristy after all
the Masses on February 2nd and 3rd, and then will be available
in the Rectory throughout the year. We ask an offering of
$5.00 per set.
Blessing of Throats ~ Tuesday, February 3, 2015
The practice of Blessing of Throats on February 3rd
originated with St. Blaise. As legend has it, a mother came to
St. Blaise because her young son had a fish bone lodged in his
throat. At St. Blaise’s command, the child was able to cough
up the bone. We pray through the intercession of St. Blaise
that God delivers us from throat ailments and from every other
evil. The blessing of Throats will take place after the 7:00am,
9:00am and 7:30pm Masses on Tuesday, February 3rd.
First Friday, February 6, 2015, overnight Eucharistic
Adoration in the Notre Dame Chapel of the Parish Life Center,
from 9:00pm to 7:00am. Sign up sheet is available at the
church main entrance.
Spend One Hour with Me in the Blessed Sacrament
Come and spend time with Me to recite silently your favorite
prayers like the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet, read My
messages in the Bible, contemplate acts of faith, hope and
charity, thanksgiving, healing and reparation. Or simply keep
Me company, just as you would a dear friend.
-Affectionately Yours, Jesus Christ

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,
Pope Francis has designated 2015 as a Year of Consecrated Life. Since 1977, the universal Church has celebrated a World Day
of Prayer for Consecrated Life close to the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. On Sunday, February 1st, at the 12 noon Mass
at Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica in Newark, the Archdiocese will observe this day with a special emphasis on the call to
consecrated life in today’s world. The consecrated life is one way that men and women live out their baptismal commitment as
followers of Jesus. Some become members of a religious congregation or a secular institute. Others remain single and make a
profession to God through the local bishop and are known as consecrated virgins. We recognise and give thanks for those who
have consecrated their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and pray in a special
way for those who are currently in formation (like Sr. Mary Immanuela Pineiro) or are thinking about a vocation to religious
life. Pope Francis calls us to look to the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion, and to embrace the future with hope.
Go to http://newarkyearforconsecratedlife.weebly.com for more information.

How did you use your “blizzard day” last Tuesday? Fortunately for our area, snow levels were far below what was predicted and
what was experienced on Long Island and New England. If you were off from work or school, how did you spend your time:
praying, playing, reading, cleaning, catching up on projects, chilling out? It is not often that we get opportunities in which our
regular agendas are altered by “Mother Nature.” Such times can help us realize what things are really important and what are
simply more convenient, usual, or preferred. Some of our more intrepid parishioners made it to Mass during and after the snow.
+++
Next weekend, we will join with Catholic Churches across the country and around the world celebrating World Marriage Day. If
possible, we invite couples to worship together next weekend to receive a special blessing.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Readings
Modern people seem to be both fascinated by and dismissive of the idea of the demonic. People flock to movies that involve
demonic possession and are fascinated by stories of purported exorcisms. At the same time, when we read stories like the one in
today’s Gospel about Jesus casting out an “unclean spirit,” we might be tempted to psychologize the story, so that the evil force
that speaks to Jesus becomes simply a metaphor for psychological or emotional illness. There are, however, good reasons to
resist this way of reading the story.
First, one should think twice about adding the stigma of even a metaphorical association with the demonic to the various stigmas
associated with mental illness. Second, the stories of Jesus’ power over demons in the New Testament are not stories about his
ability to resolve people’s internal conflicts, but about his power over external forces that afflict and oppress people, forces that
might exploit psychological weaknesses but are not reducible to them.
At the same time that the New Testament affirms the reality of demonic forces, its overriding message, as in today’s Gospel, is
about Jesus’ power over those forces. The fascination with the devil or demons that some people feel can become quite unhealthy
if they forget that the gospel is the good news that Jesus’ victory over all the powers of evil is assured. Jesus has come to show us
that these powers of evil are not glamorous and fascinating, but rather tawdry and tedious. They merit our caution, but not our
interest.
“May your presence in our lives, O Holy Spirit, expel from us all that is evil, all that is impure, all that is opposed to God. May
your presence guard and protect us all our days. Amen.”
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.” - 1 Corinthians 7: 32
How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God
won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this—use the word “pray” instead
of the word “worry” in the future.
