Year 5/6 Camp 2015 LUNCH ORDERS The Year 5/6 Camp is being held in week 9 of term one (Monday 30 March to Thursday 2 April). Our camp will be returning to Ngamuwahine Lodge located in the upper Kaimai Range. Ngamuwahine Lodge is a purpose built educaJonal facility that provides a wide variety of acJviJes to challenge our students in an outdoor se[ng. The cost per student to aIend is $70. We suggest that making regular payments in the eight weeks prior to camp to avoid any financial hardship close to camp Jme. We will again require 8-‐10 parents to aIend camp and act as acJve helpers with student acJviJes. As camp week nears we will be asking for an indicaJon from parents who are interested in aIending for some or all of the camp. BREAKFAST IN SCHOOL Our breakfast in school programme will be be beginning in week two. Breakfast is available to all enrolled students daily from 8:30am-‐8:45am. A review of our lunch order system and the variety of food that students were ordering has revealed an intake of over 90% of unhealthy opJons. As a school we can no longer condone or conJnue with this arrangement. We are currently exploring alternate avenues that would provide healthier opJons for our students. This could include another provider, or outsourcing to a member of our school community. If you are interested in the possibility of providing a paid lunch service then please see Daryl at school. FRUIT IN SCHOOL Our Fruit in School will begin from Monday next week. NO KIDS CLUB 2015 The Waihi Central School ajer school Kids Club will not be operaJng in 2015. Without enough regular children the conJnued operaJon of our ajer school care programme makes it unviable. Should there be a enough interest and numbers in future there is a possibility the ajer school care could be restarted at a future date. TEACHER ONLY DAY -‐ THIS THURSDAY This Thursday 5 February will be a teacher only day at school. Our teachers are involved in a professional development day with a mathemaJcs facilitator. Dr. Suzanne Greaves will again be delivering FREE School appointments for any students who may need to see the Doctor. Dr. Suzanne’s clinic is held every Thursday from 12:30pm. To book an appointment please phone Charmaine in the office who will complete a consultaJon form for your child. AlternaJvely a teacher may contact you by phone to seek your permission for your child see Dr. Sue. Parents do not have to be present for a consultaJon may are welcome if they wish to do so. UNIFORM Charmaine in the office is available to assist you with any uniform items you may be requiring for 2015. Also a reminder that ‘all’ students are required to wear a bucket hat during terms one and four. Our school hats are available for purchase through the school office. SWIMMING All classes will be parJcipaJng in swimming lessons over the next 5-‐7 weeks. Please ensure that your child/ren arrive at school with togs, towel and plasJc bag every day. Chromebooks As you are aware the Board of Trustees is working on iniJaJves to assist families in purchasing Chromebooks. Prior to placing an order with our supplier we need to confirm numbers of parents/caregivers wanJng to opt into this iniJaJve. There will be only one opportunity to opt in To assist parents/caregivers in making the decision to commit we will be holding an informaJon evening this Wednesday 5 January at 5:30pm in the school hall. At this informaJon evening we will have a Chromebook available for you to view and the opportunity for any quesJons you may have. This is an exciJng iniJaJve for the school. Staff are working through the logisiJcs for the use of the Chromebooks to enhance student learning. We are se[ng up the online shared learning space so that parents will be able to access their child/ren’s learning from home. Timeframe for ImplementaLon 2015 Week 1 -‐ Parent InformaJon Evening Week 2 -‐ Opportunity for parents/caregivers to opt in to purchase Chromebooks through the school Week 3 -‐ Order placed with supplier for Chromebooks What is a Chromebook? A Chromebook is a laptop running Chrome OS as its operaJng system. The devices are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applicaJons and data residing "in the cloud". Chromebooks are primarily sold both directly from Google and from the company's retail partners. By 2012, schools had become the largest category of customer. While Chromebooks are designed to be used when connected to the Internet, users are able to access Google applicaJons such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Drive in offline mode. Chromebooks also come with a built-‐in local music-‐
player, a photo editor, and a PDF-‐ and Microsoj Office document-‐viewer that are funcJonal without Internet access. Provisional OrganisaJon re Chromebooks ‣ Chromebooks will not be allowed to travel home with students unJl they have been fully purchased through school. ‣ Chromebooks are the property of the student (and their family) and will only be used by the student. ‣ Accidental damage caused at school, will be covered under the school’s insurance. ‣ Damage caused outside of school will be covered by the owner. Classroom Use of Chromebooks Chromebooks should be thought of another tool that students use in their learning. It is a maIer of the right tool for the right job. Chromebooks will incorporated into a dynamic learning environment. This will see students working in: • wriJng and text books • spelling books • mathemaJcs books Along with the more modern approach of • Google Apps and the growing number of apps • internet • Web based learning sites -‐ e.g. mathleJcs • Use of the digital environment for sharing and creaJng with peers. NOTE: There is no expectaJon that you families purchase a Chromebook. This is a totally voluntary opJon. We believe strongly that students need to be digitally literate, to be competent, confident, connected learners. Week 4-‐5 (dependent on supplier) Chromebooks arrive and are distributed to students.
