Presented by the Church of Christ in Florence, Alabama The Mars Hill Messenger February 1, 2015 MY COMPANY “...Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men” (Matthew 16:23). When Jesus rebuked Peter, He was distancing Himself from a dangerous friend. He was refusing to become mixed up with someone who, in that moment, would rob Him of his purpose and hinder His service to the Father. Are the people we keep company with those who will help us get to heaven? Are they walking with us down the straight and narrow road (Matthew 7:13-14)? Are they encouraging us to keep the faith and be faithful to the end (2 Timothy 4:6-8, Revelation 2:10)? Whether they be our spouse, our children, or other family members, are those with whom we communicate in a close relationship helping us to heaven? Paul is writing to Christians in Thessalonica when he states, “…And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he might be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother” (2 Thessalonians 3:14-15). Paul offers two warnings. The first is that if a brother is not conducting himself in a manner that is Christ-like, then the Christians around him need to separate themselves from him. They need to give him opportunity to see what he is missing and to change his ways. Paul also knows that if Christians continue in the company of the erring brother, they, too, can be pulled away from the Christian life. The influence of one can lead to many being lost (1 Corinthians 5:6). In 2 Timothy 4:9-11 Paul tells Timothy to come quickly to him. Paul states that Demas, who knew the gospel, had forsaken him and the gospel. Paul did not ask Timothy to bring Demas with him, but to bring Mark. Mark would be useful to Paul. Mark would help the cause of Christ and assist Paul as he preached the Word from prison. Paul knew that Timothy also could be counted on to help him finish the race (2 Timothy 3:6-8). We are wise to keep company with those who support our faith in God. Our closest friends and trusted confidants should be our fellow laborers in the eternal kingdom. They will help bear our burdens and carry our loads (Galatians 6:2). They will pray for our strength. They will be alarmed and tell us so if we lose our passion for worship or otherwise begin to step back from Christ (Hebrews 10:24-25, Galatians 6:1). They will encourage us to fellowship with others of like mind. They will lovingly work with us as we seek to share the gospel. And we as Christians, brothers in Christ, should do the same for those with whom we keep company. God is honored as we show such love (John 13:34-35). -Jamie Cox NEWS & NOTES We commend Ed Rogers who wanted to be sure of his obedience to the gospel and was baptized on January 18. Our thanks to Mars Hill members who have given books that will become part of the library at Philippine Theological College (soon to become Asian Christian University).
