Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
onsecrated Life
This Tuesday, February 2nd – The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord – the Church celebrates the annual
World Day of Consecrated Life. It takes on a particular dimension, as the Holy Father has declared this year, from December 29th, 2014 through February 2nd, 2016, as the “Year of Consecrated Life”. Doubtless, you will read the Holy
Father’s words and those of Bishop Murphy (elsewhere in this bulletin) on the subject of the contributions and life of
our men and women religious throughout the world, and particularly here in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Here I will
provide some definition, and attempt to offer some clarification, since there always seems to be much confusion of
categories in regard to; priests, deacons, nuns, monks, sisters and brothers. This will not be even remotely exhaustive, nor simple, as there are also Personal Prelatures and other Institutes that are “kind-of-sort-of” religious life, but
not exactly. I hope that I will not confuse more than clarify!
Sometimes people ask me, “What order do you belong to?” My usual response is, “I don’t belong to an order. I
am a secular or Diocesan Priest. I was ordained for service to the Diocese of Rockville Centre.” Secular Priests are different from those who belong to a religious order. At the Mass of Priestly Ordination, secular priests make a promise
of obedience to their Ordinary (head bishop of the diocese) and his successors. The promise of celibacy (that they will
not marry) was made at their Mass of Ordination as Transitional Deacons, as well as the promise of obedience for the
first time. So we have to promise obedience twice. Shows how important that virtue is in the Church.
Religious order priests, nuns, monks, sisters, and brothers all make vows (not promises) of poverty, chastity,
and obedience at their Mass of Religious Profession. While the vow of chastity is the same as the secular priest’s
promise of celibacy, religious vow obedience to their superior, who may or may not be a bishop. More often not. The
vow of poverty may cover a broad spectrum, since some who take the vow may live very comfortably in nice surroundings, while others live in very rough conditions, begging for their basic needs. The overall charism is that those who
make the vow of poverty technically own nothing of their own. This generally applies to their clothing, mode of transportation, etc. They do not have personal bank accounts or investment portfolios. They have given themselves to the
Lord through the religious order, and so the order takes care of all their necessities and needs. Everything belongs
to the community. Any income they derive from their employ (if they are employed in teaching or other work outside
of the convent or friary) goes to the order and not to themselves. It is much more of an apostolic/family system, in
which all things are to be shared in common.
Secular priests do not take a vow of poverty. Although we are incardinated in (belong to) a particular diocese
and the diocese has certain responsibilities to us, we do not live in a communal setting as religious do, so in many
respects, we are quasi-independent. We are paid a modest salary, because for most of what we need, we have to pay
for it ourselves: clothing, books, automobile, meal out, travel, etc. There are allowances given for auto insurance, retreat expenses, and continuing education, but in general, the priest must budget his personal income and try to save
a few dollars for the future and unforeseen needs just like anyone else. And – yes – we secular priests are required
to file income tax returns and pay into Social Security. April 15th comes around for us too! Yet, the spirit of poverty
is to be part of our lives, in which we are not overly fixed on providing for our household and future, as most people
need to be. Religious order priests, brothers and sisters do not have these particular issues, as they have no personal
income.
Monks and nuns are specifically those who live in a monastery or convent. They do not have regular contact
with the outside world. They lead a life of prayer for the Church and go about their work hidden from the eyes of
most of us, yet ever seen by God.
Religious Sisters and Brothers all belong to particular orders: Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits, Josephites,
Oblates… the list is very long. Some religious brothers are also called to Holy Orders; many are not.
Regardless of the order or institute, all are called to serve our Lord and His Church. Let us pray for our religious who have served and continue to serve so generously in whatever their capacity for the glory of God and the
salvation of souls.
In Christ, Fr. Greg
P.S.: Next Sunday, Feb. 8th, we will host the “Back to God, Four Chaplains’ Remembrance” here in church at
2:00 pm. This has been arranged by the American Legion to remember the four chaplains who went to their
deaths in the icy North Atlantic on the U.S.A.T. Dorchester on February 3, 1943 while serving God and Country.
Please come and join us for this patriotic service!
P.S.S.: You may have noticed that there is currently a small crucifix on the altar. We have brought the one that
usually sits upon it to the metal refinishing company so that it can be brought back to its original beauty. Additionally, we have brought the capsula that holds the lunette in the tabernacle for the adoration Host used for
Benediction, and the beautiful processional crucifix that was used in the old church for so many years, so that
they can be refinished and used, as well. The total for the three items is $3,200. If anyone would be interested
in contributing and memorializing these items for Divine Worship, please let me know. Thank-You.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
The ‘Catholic Ministries Appeal’ has begun in our Parish and across the Diocese. The ‘Catholic Ministries Appeal’ is the
yearly appeal that helps our diocese fund many ministries, services and agencies in the 133 parishes across Long Island.
We realize that everyone’s financial situation is different, but we ask you to discuss with your family and prayerfully
reflect upon the graces that God has bestowed on you and your loved ones. The decision you make is between you and
God, through prayer and reflection, you will come to a meaningful response.
Our Parish Goal for 2015 is $62,200. If we reach our goal, St. Jude will receive a parish share of 20% totaling $12,440.
For any money pledged and received over goal the parish receives a share of 80%. On the pledge card there is a payment option (4 months to 10 months) which you can make a pledge, pay online, or if you would like to make a credit
card payment now. Please call the CMA office at 516-379-5210 ext 2. or visit www.Catholic MinistriesAppeal.org for
more information. There is pamphlets and envelopes available in the church lobby for those who are interested.
The parish attained 110.7% of our 2014 CMA Goal of $61,900. The parish received our share of $17,702.74. Thank you
for your generous support of last year’s CMA.

A Letter from Bishop William Murphy
February 1, 2015
World Day for Consecrated Life
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life in the Universal Church.
We give thanks and honor the women and men in consecrated life who have served and are serving here in our great Diocese of Rockville Centre.
The life of this local Church has been blessed through the mission and ministry of these
dedicated women and men who are responding to God’s call to each of them to follow Jesus as
vowed religious. As religious, their commitment to a life of prayer, lived in community and expressed through their ministry in the Church, witnesses to their response to God’s love for them.
Their vowed commitment to God and service to the Church is a gift for all of us.
As we move through this Year of Consecrated Life I invite each of you to take whatever opportunities are presented to say “thanks” to the religious who are here in our Diocese, to remember them in your prayers and to pray that other generous young people respond to God’s call to
join them as religious sisters, brothers and priests.
I join my prayers with yours in thanksgiving for their lives of prayer and service and in
petition that God will bless each of the religious who are part of our Diocese with gifts of grace,
hope and peace as they witness to God’s great love. I ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to continue to inspire each of them as they live a life of “Yes” to God’s call.
With prayers and gratitude, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ
Bishop of Rockville Centre

Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who set time aside
with the Sunday Readings throughout the week so as to be better prepared
to hear the Word of God and act on it.
St. Vincent de Paul
“Remember” is a word that is often on our lips when we pray and when we
speak to our friends. Sometimes we also feel ourselves to be better people
when we remember the goodness of others to us, their generosity, their
unselfishness, their tenderness, their thoughtfulness. The little word “remember” is at the heart of our greatest prayer, the Mass. The Mass is the
great prayer in which along with Jesus we ask God the Father to remember the life, sufferings, death and resurrection of His only Son. Christians
gather together and offer Mass, renewing again and again the great act of
“remembering,” while at the same time making present again the offering
that Jesus made of Himself on the cross. “Join the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul!”

A Workshop on Angels
“Dancing on the Head of a Pin: The Angelic Doctor on Angelic Natures.”
What are angels? What do they do? How are they
different from us, and why do we sometimes confuse them with God? Why are angels good and
demons bad, and why can’t demons be forgiven?
How do angels see? Are we simply angels covered
in skin? What can angels make me think, and
what can’t they make me do? What is it like to
stand in a crowd of angels, and why doesn’t that
make a lot of sense? These are just some of the
questions that can be legitimately posed about
those interesting creatures called angels. Please
join us for a five-week workshop in which we will
consider what one of the greatest minds in human
history said about the issue, Doctor of the Church,
St. Thomas Aquinas.
