Bob Marriage and Annulments There were two articles of interest in newspapers this past week on divorced Catholics. The first was in last Sunday’s (1/25) New York Times entitled, “As Vatican Revisits Divorce, Many Catholics Long for Acceptance”. Then, a few days later Bishop Zubik responded with an op-ed in the Post-Gazette (Wednesday, 1/28) entitled, “We don’t toss out divorced Catholics.” Since it’s been a while since I have talked about the topic of marriage and annulments in this space, I thought today would be a good opportunity. As I see it, the articles are looking at two sides of the same coin. As Bishop Zubik points out in his article, divorced Catholics can continue to receive the sacraments until they would enter into a subsequent marriage without an annulment of the prior marriage. It’s this very topic of Catholics in subsequent marriages that the New York Times article looks at. Without an annulment, they are not able to receive the sacraments. The Catholic understanding of the sacredness and permanence of marriage comes directly from Jesus’ own words in the Gospels (Matthew 19:6; Mark 10:9). This is why we treat the bond of marriage so seriously. At a wedding, there are no magic words that the priest or deacon says that makes someone married. It’s the action of the couple who profess their wedding vows publically and then live them out that make the bond. And Jesus is present in the bond, which makes it a sacrament. Where such a bond is present as Jesus says, it’s permanent until death. Therefore, we always assume that every marriage is valid until proven otherwise. An annulment is the attempt to prove the situation otherwise. Maybe there was a reason why that marriage we thought was valid really was not. Maybe, for example, one or both of the spouses were addicted to drugs. Maybe they really wanted to give themselves totally in marriage but were unable to do so. Because of the drugs they simply didn’t have the mental capacity to live out those vows; the addiction was the ruling force in their life. This is what the annulment would try to prove. So, an annulment doesn’t break a bond but simply tries to prove that the bond, which we thought was valid, really wasn’t. It doesn’t mean that there was no bond. It simply means that the bond was not present on the deepest level of the sacrament. Therefore, any children of the marriage are still legitimate. Also, since the persons were not in a valid Mass Intentions: February 1-8 Sunday, February 1 - Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5:00 pm (Sat. Today, there are so many people who have gone through divorce, are in subsequent marriages and cannot receive the sacraments. On the one hand, how can we include them so that they feel like they’re not ostracized? On the other hand, how can we respect the sacredness of marriage which comes directly from the mouth of Jesus Himself? The Synod on the Family in October, in Philadelphia, grabs all the headlines with Pope Francis attending. However, behind the scenes the Holy Father has called a separate commission to look at the subject of annulments. Are there ways we can simplify the process? Or should one’s being able to receive the sacraments even be dependent on their state of marriage at all? I don’t know the answer. These are the types of questions the commission, made up of people far more intelligent than I, is looking at. Here’s hoping they succeed in coming up with some answers. – Prefer Nothing to Christ – FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 1, 2015 Pastoral Staff To reach a staff member, dial 724-941-9406, and then the extension number listed. Transportation is provided for the teens, but young adults make their own arrangements, through carpooling. What is A Mission Trip? A Mission Trip is a wonderful opportunity for all high school students to experience a week of service to others in need. This year we are trying something new and are staying local. Working with Pittsburgh churches, all the teens will get the chance to live out the Gospel as we work to improve the lives of those affected by poverty and isolation. During this week, they will stay in dorm housing, work 8 hour days and spend the evenings in both social and spiritual activities. Social time includes swimming, drive-in theater, icebreakers, games and more. Spiritual time includes morning prayer, evening reflections and Mass. The cost is $275 for the week and includes housing, food, transportation and mission supplies. Since this is a local trip we are hoping to have a team that leaves from St. Benedict the Abbot every day so that teens who work or play sports have a way to get connected and make a difference. Service Sites: We are hoping to have 5 identified service sites for the week with a team of 10 people committed to each site. Four communities we plan to target are Carrick, Brookline, McKees Rocks and Monaca. There will be different projects at each site depending on the local need. Some intended projects include yard work, painting, minor home repairs, vacation bible school, visiting the elderly, and preparing and serving dinner to those we serve. NOTE: This is the first year that we have been responsible for finding the service work for a mission trip. This will take planning and coordination with agencies in the community. We are in need of adults who are willing and able to make these connections and follow up before mission week. We need adults the week of the Mission to help drive teens, make lunches, buy supplies, etc. This can be for a day or two. 5. If you can’t come, please pray for those who are going. Pray that God will open hearts and souls to experience His presence. 6. Please consider financially supporting the youth group through fundraisers or private donations. Last year we had 50 participants. With the increasing number attending, the cost is expected to be over $12,000. What is Required? 1. A $50 nonrefundable deposit due by Monday, March 2, along with a letter of commitment, available on our website. 2. All participants must log five hours of service through Youth Ministry. This is to foster relationships before the trip. 3. All participants must work two fundraisers scheduled this spring/summer to support the trip. All monies raised will be used to offset the individual cost. 4. All paperwork must be completed, along with final payment by Sunday, June 7. 5.
