Photo Credit: Ardean Werner Photo Credit: Ardean Werner By Don Collier From the Exalted Ruler Kevin Matherly Hello All, It is an honor that my first official action in 2015 is to challenge you to become more active in the Atascadero Elks Lodge. The start of a new year always begins with resolutions. Some of us want to lose weight, exercise more, and get healthier or other lofty goals. I am asking you to resolve to become more active in our lodge. Why volunteer? In the past, some thought that individuals volunteered strictly for altruistic reasons. However, I believe there are many good reasons to volunteer. The contacts you make at the Elks may help you make business contacts, learn new skills and help your community. What better place to do this than the Elks? We all know that volunteering helps build self- esteem because it makes you feel better about yourself, to feel needed, and to feel like you are making a contribution. The social aspect of the Elks is also very important because everyone knows Elks believe in having fun and in being sociable. The values we share as Elks is also very important. What better cause is there to believe in than the purpose of the Elks? We as Elks volunteer and become involved because it meets our needs, because of friendship, and because we believe in the Elks organization. Elks Lodges bring so much more to their communities than just a building. They are places where neighbors come together, families share meals, and children grow up. Elks invest in their communities through programs that help children grow up healthy and drug-free, by undertaking projects that address unmet needs, and by honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans. Anyhow, I will get off my soapbox. I hope everyone had a great New Years! We had a great turn out for our Christmas Party on December 20th. The ham dinner was excellent and I especially enjoyed the scalloped potatoes. The entertainment was fabulous too, consisting of a female a Capella group performing Christmas Carols with a bingo game thrown in. The songs were drawn at random by Elks and everyone had a bingo card with song titles instead of numbers. Bingo winners got to go to a table and pick a wrapped prize. It was a unique and fun experience. There was lots of good cheer and everyone had a good time. Thanks to Linda Strickland and her committee for organizing such a wonderful event. We had our Hoop Shoot Awards Dinner on January 8th in conjunction with our regular lodge dinner. The lodge hosted about 20 parents and kids for dinner with a short awards ceremony that followed. One little boy was so excited that he kept walking around saying “I am going to get a first place trophy.” Boy did he have a big smile on his face when he got that first place trophy! The “Dinner for Two” is fast approaching and its committee members have been meeting regularly to plan for that big evening on February the 14th. If you have not purchased your tickets yet you may be too late, this event has a limited amount of tickets and sells out fast. I believe there may be a few left but you better hurry so you won’t miss out. Those who attend will enjoy a scrumptious dinner and a night of fun and prizes. Our Elkettes are also gearing up for the annual Amazing Garage Sale happening February 16 thru the 21st. This is a fun event, so get involved by helping set up or just coming down to donate or buy some treasures. It has been very successful in the past and I’m sure it won’t disappoint this year. This is one of the Elkettes major fundraisers and we appreciate their support and hard work on behalf of the lodge. Finally, I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of the volunteers who make this lodge a great place to meet and enjoy friends while performing important community service. Hope to see you at one of these events soon. CHRISTMAS PARTY By Evie Mintey We had a great Elks Christmas Party this year. A special thanks to Becky Collie for finding our great entertainment for the evening. We played a musical bingo with Christmas songs performed by KMPR, a barbershop chorus. A special thanks to Linda Strickland, Karen Hirrel, Ron Jones and Chris Mintey for volunteering to cook, organizing the event, and decorating the Lodge. KMPR Barbershop Quartet. The Prize Table Christmas Party Crew 2 NEW YEAR’S EVE Bartender Vicki and a few of our members put together a New Year’s Eve Potluck! A crowd of very nice convivial people showed up with food and just the right attitude to make for a very fun evening! We toasted the New Year as the ball dropped in New York. The mood was perfect for a relaxing and fun evening. There was dancing Dinner For Two Well, as of this writing, all tickets are sold and your Dinner For Two Committee is working hard to make sure everything is going to be great. We still could use some help with the donation drawing items. So if you would like to donate something or money to help, please call one of us. The wagon and second chance drawing could also use items. If you are interested in helping with the dinner or kitchen clean-up, please call Kathy Stornetta, 239-1498. We are doing something different this year. We are doing a dessert auction so we do need a few more desserts if anyone is willing to make one, please call us. Of course, we can always use more help especially the night of the event with runners for the second chance, runners for the auction and people to make sure everyone has paid for their auction items. Please call us if you are willing to help. We on the committee have worked hard to make this a fun night for all so we are looking forward to a great night. You know, stay active, be charitable, get involved, have more fun, make date night with your sweetheart, and many others? Well, Tuesday Night Bingo is a great place to help you keep your resolutions and maybe reward you with a Bingo jackpot. How cool would it be if you won $10,000.00? The last game of each session is Blackout Bingo with a jackpot of $10,000, if you get a black out in 46 balls or less. It can happen, so why not let it happen to you? The 50 cent and $1 pull tabs continue to be a big hit and the $1 Lucky Five Bingo games are exciting with payouts over $100 every time. The Lucky Pick jackpot reached 1000.00 and G Villa from Atascadero picked the five lucky numbers and won the jackpot. We are seeing more and more new players coming out to play Tuesday Night Bingo and that is great news for our charity account. We still need volunteers to help with set-up, 11:30 every Tuesday. Volunteers are needed during Bingo games to help with concessions, pull tabs, cashiering, and assisting players, and close outs. Sessions begin at 4:30, 6:30, and 8:30pm. If you have some time available to help with Tuesday Night Bingo we would love to have you. Again, I have to give shout outs to some dedicated members who show up every week to help, Kaye Bruns, Ron and Susan Jones, Jackie Dallaire, Clara Stewart, Kent Lowe, Lance Erickson, Pete Hendley, Kevin Matherly, and those members who come in and play. You are the reason Tuesday Night Bingo continues to be a success for our lodge. Susan Marple Bingo Chairperson HOOP SHOOT AWARDS On Thursday January 8th a group of about twenty parents and their hoop shooters had dinner at the Lodge to celebrate with us. The kids were the top three winners of each age division that had participated in our annual Hoop Shoot contest that was held on December 13th at Colony Community Park. The winners were treated to a free dinner which was followed by a short ceremony in which each winner was presented a trophy. We had a good attendance and everyone had a great time. “HANDYMEN” NEEDED Our Elks Lodge is in need of fellow Elks with handyman skills. We occasionally need someone to do simple tasks around the lodge to maintain upkeep. For example, we might need some railings tightened, light bulbs changed, and other such minor repairs. This won’t require a lot of hours, just “as needed”. If you are able to do minor repairs like this and would be willing to volunteer, please contact John Paulsen, Trustee and Safety Officer, 466-4049 or call the lodge office. Thank you. 4 SPECIAL NOTICE Memorial for Ken Meyer Saturday, January 31, 2015 11:00 am. Super B0wl PARTY! 2PM SUNDAY FEBRUARY 1ST! STREET TACOS AND FIXINS, $6 Come on In!
