Lake Minnetonka District Winter Camporee 2015 Luau and Klondike Derby Informational Packet February 14- 15, 2015 Saturday through Sunday Base Camp Come join your fellow Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Webelos from Lake Minnetonka District on Saturday, February 14th for a FULL DAY of fun and games at Base Camp. Enjoy the Northern Luau and Karaoke contest along with traditional winter camporee events such as the Klondike Derby. Then stay the night if you like and camp inside Base Camp, or camp and build snow shelters outside. Located in the century-old Cavalry Drill Hall near Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Base Camp is adjacent to the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport. Base Camp will be a great place for our camporee no matter what the weather outside. Check-in Saturday morning beginning at 8:00AM, see the ‘Schedule of Events’ below. Registration must be made online. Check-in is located inside the main door. Tent campsites are assigned at check-in. Overnight camping is provided inside at Base Camp or outside in the adjacent field. Bring your sleeping bag and personal items for sleeping indoors. Parking Fees Included in the base fee. Meals Bring your own food and equipment to tailgate/ cook outside in the parking lot for lunch & dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. No open fires. Charcoal fires are allowed provided they are inside a container (e.g., a Weber grill or portable fire ring.) Water is provided at Base Camp. Everything must be packed out! Depending on counselor availability, Leatherwork, Woodcarving, and Wilderness Survival are some of the possible options. Participants would be able to earn PARTIAL credit for the merit badge sessions. All sessions are included as part of the camporee fee. 3 Activities Offered Outdoor Activities: Snow Shelter/Quinzee building, Klondike Derby, snow sculptures, snow sports, snow football & snow soccer. Indoor Activities: Climbing, archery, merit badges (partial credit), scout crafts (paracord survival bracelet, friendship bracelet, and leatherwork), basketball, Karaoke contest, Luau, and Talent show. Please bring a non-perishable food items with you as a donation. Crafts Scouts can each make one free paracord survival bracelet or friendship bracelet. Additional bracelets can be made at a cost of $2.00 payable in cash. Depending on availability for counselors, there may be optional opportunities to learn about Woodcarving & Leatherwork. Any fees for participating in these optional craft activities would be collected during the course sessions. Klondike Derby Bring your Klondike sled and “Be Prepared”, you will be tested on basic scout skills along the way. Pull your Scoutmaster in your sled! Please have your skit and/ or song approved by our MC, or district staff. 1st Aid Please have the proper medical forms and permission slips handy for every Scout when you check in. The medical form is found on the camporee resources page. The medical forms are to be kept on site by the scout unit after check in. Hawaiian shirt or costumes are encouraged. Remember to bring warm clothes four outside activities, especially if you will be sleeping outside! 4 Bring 1. Bring your tents, shelters or shovels to build a quinzee, sleeping bags, pads, food, stoves, cooking utensils, insulated containers, beverages, cups and silverware. 2. If sleeping indoors, bring your sleeping bag and personal items. . 3. Personal snow shoes. 4. Bring your Klondike sled to the race! The maximum number of Scouts that can push/pull a sled is six (6). See ‘Klondike races’ above for additional information. 5. Bring your recipes, ingredients, and any cooking equipment for the SPAM cooking competition. See ‘SPAM Cooking Competition’ above or additional information. 6. Bring your Hawaiian attire, SPAM decorations, inflatable palm trees, and of course, any Pink Flamingos that you’d like to help decorating the camporee. Parking Food Shelf Project Camporee Patch 5 Parking for your vehicle and trailer is available in the designated parking lot. The Order of the Arrow is collecting non-perishable food to be transported to a local food shelf. Please turn your food items in at check-in Saturday morning. The camporee patch will be available for all attendees as part of your registration fee. Camporee Policies The following rules were made to help us have a successful and safe camping experience. It is the responsibility of the adults in charge to see that Scouts know and understand these rules. Anyone violating them may be asked to leave the camp. Behavior: Scout Oath and Scout Law – applies to all Scouts and Scouters. Please emphasize the “good sport” and “do your best” aspects of Scouting. First and foremost, we’re here to have fun. Vehicles: Parking is available in designated parking areas. Firearms: Personal firearms, ammunition (live or expended), explosives, fireworks and toy weaponry are prohibited. Camouflage: Military camouflage should not be worn. Adults: At least one responsible adult (21 or older) must be in camp at all times. Knives: NO straight-bladed knives should be brought. Pocket knives may be used only in designated carving areas, and carrying them during the event is NOT recommended. Lights out: After the luau & talent show is “Quiet Time.” Scouts should stay in their site or designated camping area after lights-out with the exception of to-and-from the latrines. Please respect others during lights-out/Quiet Time. For those sleeping inside, we plan to show a movie during Quiet Time before official “Lights Out.” Radios: No radios, stereos, tape players, headsets, Game boys or related electronics, etc. are allowed in camp. Cell phone use by youth should be kept to a minimum. Registration of Units Outside of Lake Minnetonka District: Registration is open to units outside Lake Minnetonka District (LMD) one (1) week before the registration closes. Units outside of LMD may register beginning February 5, 2015. Registration closes for all units on February 12, 2015 at 11:55PM.
