Epistles from the Pastor
Lent is almost upon us. But what in the world is Lent? You might
remember years ago in high school when friends would “give up”
something for Lent often something they didn’t like anyway.
Traditionally, Lent celebrates the 40 days Christ spent in the wilderness at
the beginning of his ministry. If you count from Ash Wednesday (February
18) to Easter (April 4) you will see there are 46 days. That is because
Sundays should always be a celebration of Christ’s birth and not a time of
preparation for the crucifixion.
During the 40 days of Lent, it is traditional to meditate on the sufferings
and sacrifices of the ministry of Jesus leading up to the horrible crucifixion
and wonderful resurrection.
I hope during these days of Lent, you will prepare your heart to share in
both the suffering and the unbounded joy. Each day, I hope you will begin
with a thought of preparation for the awesome responsibility of preparing
for participating in “the kingdom.”

WEEK OF COMPASSION
The “Week of Compassion” this year will be February 15 to the 22nd. This is
our disaster assistance ministry that works in conjunction with “One Great
Hour of Sharing.” When disasters hit anywhere in the world, plane loads of
supplies are on the way from “Week of Compassion.”
PANCAKE SUPPER ON FEBRUARY 17, 6:00PM
This is traditional as it was common for people to give up sweets for Lent
and what is called “Fat Tuesday” or “Mardi Gras” was the last day for
syrup. Please join us.
LENTEN SERVICE, FEBRUARY 18
On Wednesday, February 18, (Ash Wednesday), we will celebrate the
beginning of Lent. Our service will begin at 7:00pm. It will be a dark and
silent service marking the 40 days of preparation for Easter.
Instead of giving up something for Lent, each person will be asked to take up
a cross, giving a name to the cross, which may or may not be shared with
those participating. The service will conclude with the imposition of ashes.
Our Bible study “The Word” has resumed but we will now meet at 1:30pm
instead of 1:00 once a week on Wednesdays.
CHURCH UNIQUE
Several of us attended the “Church Unique” seminar on Feb 23rd & 24th, and we were very excited about some of the
ideas that were presented to revitalize a church spiritually and numerically.
A meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5th at 6:00pm to discuss these topics and how they may be
beneficial to HCCC. Whether you attended the seminar or not, please plan to join us. More information about this
