If you are not receiving mail from the parish, chances are you are not registered. You are free to stop by the Parish Office to become a registered member of All Saints. Parish registration is required to be a Baptismal Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor. You may also visit our website at www.allsaintsvachurch.org. Lent is our annual retreat in the Church’s liturgical calendar, when we take time to prepare to renew 3 baptismal promises which were made at our baptism: Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children? Do you reject the glamour of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin? Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness? All of Lent is a preparation for renewing these baptismal promises at Easter. Lent is a new springtime (literally). Christ was driven into the desert by the Spirit, after his baptism by John. In the wilderness of those 40 days, Christ discovered how his Father was leading him. Our prayer is “Give us, Lord, a new heart.” That is the essence of Lent, turning from sin to growing in friendship with Jesus. As you read this, open your heart to where God wants to lead you this Lent. Through prayer and the sacraments, especially Penance and Holy Eucharist, through fasting, and almsgiving, we are united with Christians across the centuries. May others find Christ in you and your actions this Lent. Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to enjoy the talents of many people at the Winter Cabaret in the Parish Activities Center. There was the Broadway Music Revue, One-Act Play by our high school teens, and the Improv Fools! Comedy troupe. Although I cannot name all who gave so tremendously of their time and talent, I want to thank: Rob Tessier, Producer and One-Act Director; Chris Zavadowski, Music Revue Director; Vickie Taylor, Music Revue Choreographer; and Matt Moore, Fools! Director. The One-Act Play won the following awards at the Diocesan One Act Play Competition that same day: Best Supporting Actress: Clare Starrs; Best Actress: Carolyn Karcher; and 1st Place Best Play: “The Comedian." Thank you to our Upper Room Theatre Ministry for bringing joy to so many people of all ages. Father Lee Roos Lent – More or Less? On the 1st Sunday of Lent in all 3 cycles, the Gospel tells of the temptation of Jesus. The 1st two readings are related to the theme of Baptism in Cycle B. One of the key aspects of Lent is the preparation of the catechumens (the unbaptized) for the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and 1st Eucharist. For those who are already baptized, Lent is to provide a re-awakening of our baptismal commitment by living the baptismal grace we have received. Pace yourself throughout Lent by reading these passages before you come to Mass on Sunday. Allow the Holy Spirit to fix in your mind and heart the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, at Masses on Saturday, 5:30pm and Sunday, 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30am, we celebrate the Scrutiny Rites for the Catechumens and will instead use the Cycle A readings at those Masses (the Samaritan woman at the well; the man born blind; the raising of Lazarus). Less talking; more listening, Less television; more family, OF nd Jeremiah 31:3134 Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33 The cleansing of the Temple The fruit of our Lord’s passion and resurrection is a genuine interior change in those who accept it. I will make a new covenant and remember their sin no more. Christ learned obedience and became the source of eternal salvation. If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit. Themes are taken from the Lectionary for Mass and are also found in the book, The Fire in the Cloud: Lenten Meditations, by Francis Martin. Lenten Liturgies and Devotions The Light Is On For You is an initiative of the Diocese of Arlington, in partnership with the Archdiocese of Washington, to enable all Catholics to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Penance. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to draw closer to our Lord. In addition to regularly scheduled Confession times, the Sacrament of Penance will be held every Wednesday during Lent from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in every Catholic church in the Diocese of Arlington and the Archdiocese of Washington. Learn more at www.the-light-is-on.org. Pick up a brochure in the church book rack to help guide you through this sacrament. We have several forms of the Stations of the Cross that we use. We have Everyone’s Way of the Cross, in addition to the traditional St. Alphonsus Ligouri Stations of the Cross prayers. All Saints School students (grades 3-5, 6 -8) will also use these. Grades 1-3 use a simpler version of the Stations of the Cross suitable for their age level. Everyone’s Way of the Cross was composed by Clarence Enzler, a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, now deceased. The publisher, Ave Maria Press, describes this as follows: Clarence Enzler’s perennially bestselling Stations of the Cross booklet has sold more than 3 million copies since it was first published in 1970 …. For more than forty years, the simple, intimate, and powerful words of Clarence Enzler’s Everyone’s W ay of the Cross have invited readers to grow closer to Christ by embracing the mystery of suffering in the world. By joining Christ on this transformative journey, we learn to become his disciples—his other self—to a hurting world. Clarence Enzler wrote in the style of the classic spiritual text The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas à Kempis, the 15th century spiritual writer, when Enzler wrote the book My Other Self. He writes of Christ dwelling in the soul of the person and how we have conversations with Christ who addresses us as “my other self.” Our schedule for the Stations (in English) is: Feb F 20 parish Traditional F 27 parish Everyone’s Way of the Cross Mar W 4 all grades Traditional F 6 parish Traditional Lenten Penance Service Tuesday, March 31st from 6:30-8:30pm W 11 gr.
