WELCOME
It doesn't get better than this: an international
line-up and talented national acts all performing in
our own, spectacular Hamilton Gardens.
I would like to congratulate the very small but
dedicated team behind the Hamilton Gardens Arts
Festival who work incredibly hard to bring such an
outstanding event to Hamilton. The people and
performers of Hamilton can be extremely proud of
what will be achieved over the next two weeks.
I extend a warm welcome to our visitors from out of
town who will experience two gems while attending
this Festival - the performances themselves and
the unique location, which is receiving international
accolades including International Garden of the
Year. Enjoy the Festival, enjoy the Hamilton Gardens
and enjoy our wonderful city.
It's very exciting to be part of the Hamilton
Gardens Arts Festival 2015. It is an iconic
event and to be contributing to this gives me
exceptional pride and pleasure.
Putting together a Festival of this nature is
incredibly hard work. It is done by a very small
team with guidance from a voluntary Board
of Trustees.
The 2015 festival is a smorgasbord for all to enjoy.
Be it a lazy Sunday afternoon in Rogers Rose
Garden or a week night visit to take in some
theatre, there really is something for everyone.
We will again be inspiring tomorrow's artists
through an exciting mix of international and local
artists from February 13th - 26th.
I want to acknowledge the outstanding work
done by our Festival Director Becks Chambers
who has pulled together a stunning programme
in just a few short months and in a challenging
environment.
These fantastic opportunities would not be on our
doorstep without the invaluable support of our
sponsors, funders and our loyal audiences. We
thank everyone for making our festival one of the
greatest events of summer and I look forward to
meeting you all in February.
BECKS CHAMBERS
FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
JULIE HARDAKER
Thank you to those core sponsors who have been
with the Festival year after year, and to our new
sponsors, we hope your first year on board turns
into many more. To the performers ... you make
the Festival what it is.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work
done by the Board of Trustees: Graeme Cairns,
Tracey Gunn, David Macaskill, Grant Mackintosh,
Peter Sergel and Chris Williams. We got there now let's take the time to enjoy it!

Roesy
FOLK/ SCOTLAND
MUSIC
FOLK/ IRELAND
Irish songwriter Roesy is one of Ireland’s most successful touring artists.
Over the past 15 years he has released eight albums and performed in over
1,000 cities worldwide, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Ron Sexsmith,
Billy Bragg, John Martyn, Joan Armatrading and Donovan.
His work bears the influence of the ancient Irish guilds of storytelling, lyric poetry
and folk song. And, although informed by ‘The Tradition’ and directly inspired by
its songs and tunes – he is not a traditional performer in the literal sense.
Bill Hauritz, director of Australia’s iconic Woodford Folk Festival, gives an
insight into his shows: “Roesy was a standout for me at Woodford… there’s
just that bit of magic in his music. It’s to do with that Blarney blood; Irish artists
reinventing, Roesy is one of those”.

Hamilton born, but Scottish based McClennan is one of New Zealand’s
most successful musicians, having forged a career over the past 15 years,
performing in auditoriums throughout the world. Perhaps best known as
a fiddle player, McClennan is equally at home on the guitar and is also an
accomplished singer.

RHYTHM N’ SWING
HYPNOS
RUCKUS
Saint Valentine’s Day gets off to a perfect start
with jazz ballads from Tony Edwards and his
band, Rhythm n’ Swing, featuring Murray Roberts
on bass and Alister Edwards on drums. The
band has put together a special Valentine’s Day
programme, including jazz classics such as ‘My
Funny Valentine’ by Richard Rodgers and Cole
Porter’s ‘I get a Kick out of You’.
Joining us from Wellington, the Hypnos explore
the murky world of Rebetiko, an urban folk music of
the immigrant Greek underclass. Often referred to
as the blues of Greece, traditional musical forms of
the Eastern Mediterranean fuse with songs of love,
loathing, joy and sorrow.
Auckland based Ruckus are one of New Zealand’s
top improvising quartets. They bring to Hamilton a
brand new set of compositions by David Ward. Long
marinated in such juices as Monk, Coleman, Mingus,
Lacy, Zappa and Frisell, David writes music that is
melodic, humourous, rhythmic and joyous. Expect
twisted tango, carnivalesque romps, disheveled
swing and free form tunes! Featuring David Ward
(Electric Guitar), Jeff Henderson (Saxophone/
Clarinet), Eamon Edmundson-Wells (Double Bass),
Tristan Deck (Drums).
TICKETS / 0508 484 253 / hgaf.co.nz/tickets
Hypnos combine the haunting vocal melodies of
Briar Prastiti, melancholic violin lines of Tristan Carter
and the virtuosic guitar of Justin Firefly to create an
intimate experience of their most-loved Rebetiko
songs. Yamas!

Tell Me on a Sunday is a one-woman show that
charts the course of a young English girl newly
arrived in New York.
Brimming with optimism, she sets out to seek
success, companionship and, of course, love. But
as she weaves her way through the maze of the city
and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches
she begins to wonder whether – in fact – she’s
been looking for love in all the wrong places.

Real Fake White Dirt
“ENGAGING, RELENTLESS AND HUMOROUS”
THEATRE
Real Fake White Dirt is fresh, funny and unafraid of faux pas, scratching at the
underlying cultural nerves of that most unsettled of settler races – the Paheka.
This solo spoken-word poetry tour-de-force from award-winning performer
Jess Holly Bates returns from packed houses in London and Edinburgh.
Laying bare the underlying anxieties of post-colonial multiculturalism,
Real Fake White Dirt is the cringe at your racist grandparents, the modification
of nasal Pakeha vowels, the answer to the unasked questions of a modern
white crisis, and the desperate lie about your heritage.
Fusing the lyrical power of spoken word poetry with the wry relief of theatrical
staging under award-winning director Geoff Pinfield, Real Fake White Dirt is a
celebration and a critique of the Pakeha condition in New Zealand, exposing
the beautiful uncertainty of a people who stand and live in a complicated
relationship to both the land and the first peoples.

Performed by award-winning playwright and performer Arthur Meek,
The Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival hosts the Nuclear-Powerpoint lecture
of the week.
Join the over-educated, underachieving Richard Meros as he charges through
the pop-cultural slipstream to prove his amorous point: that by taking him
as her Young Lover prior to the 2016 Presidential election, Hillary Clinton will

Come and listen to a live reading of best-selling children’s book series,
The Dragon Brothers Trilogy!
Doris Mousdale, Arcadia Books (and formerly Whitcoulls Head Book Buyer),
has called The Dragon Brothers Trilogy the best children's books to come out
of New Zealand in years. Written and illustrated by James Russell and Link
Choi, the books are full of adventure, humour and poignancy.
The books follow the adventures of brothers Flynn and Paddy, as they discover
that the island they live on is thick with dragons. One steals their dog and they
have to rescue it, another mistakes them for its parents and becomes their pet,
and finally the trilogy culminates with an unplanned and wild ride on the back
of their dragon who is desperate to get to the annual dragon gathering.
Russell is an animated and funny reader - don't miss it!

From the group that presented Hamilton with
The Comedy of Errors and Macbeth, comes an
athletic, quick witted comedy.
Apocalypse Lounge presents a contemporary spin
on the classic tale of the game of love. The proud
Beatrice and the embittered Benedick can’t resist
trading barbs in a game of one-up-man-ship.
Their friends try to trick them into love but the
scheme of a jealous scoundrel and the outcome
of a disastrous wedding cause them to reconsider
their relationship and themselves.
Whenua-Land
TUDOR CONSORT
Whenua-land is a new contemporary dance
theatre work created by Karen Barbour, weaving
stories of the places and peoples of Waikato
together. Evocatively engaging with the
inspirational voices of women of this land, this
dance responds to current environmental and
political concerns from the heart. With local artists
Kartika Leng creating glorious costumes and
Jeremy Mayall a sophisticated sound score, this
dance work is suitable for all ages.
A delightful midsummer evening of
entertainments where you will enjoy watching
as well as participating in the courtly arts from
around Tudor times – graciously brought to you
by a consortium of courtiers with the essential
talents required by ladies and gentlemen of
the court; including music, song, and dance
popular at the time. Come dressed in your
Tudor or Renaissance garb and expand your
accomplishments by joining in as instructed by
our dance mistress and singing master.

Citizen Kane
Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane was a ground-breaking
drama based on the life of William Randolph
Hearst. Written, directed and produced and
starring Welles, it is frequently cited as the finest
American film ever made. The 1941 film tells the
story of a group of reporters who are trying to
decipher the last word ever spoken by
Charles Foster Kane … “Rosebud.”
Roman Holiday (1953) is a delightful, captivating
fairy-tale romance starring Audrey Hepburn and
Gregory Peck. A runaway princess named
Princess Ann, during a goodwill tour of Europe,
rebels against her sheltered life and royal
obligations. She escapes the insulated confines
of her royal prison to find a 'Prince Charming'
commoner – an American journalist-reporter
covering the royal tour in Rome.
Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Vertigo (1958) is a
romantic story of obsession, manipulation and fear.
The adaption of the French novel D’entre les morts
tells the story of former detective “Scottie”, played
by James Stewart. Scottie is forced into early
retirement due to an incident in the line of duty
that has caused him to develop acrophobia and
vertigo. Scottie is hired by an acquaintance,
Gavin Elster, as a private investigator to follow
Gavin's wife Madeleine, who is behaving strangely.

Painting &
Printmaking Awards
ART
The New Zealand Painting & Printmaking Award is our country’s most valuable
acquisitive cash award for NZ (international and resident) artists in the fields of
painting and printmaking. Each year the Waikato Society of Arts’ NZPPA team
select a judge well known in the contemporary art field. Their difficult task is to
select around fifty works from the several hundred submitted to compete for the
$20,000 award prize which is announced at the opening night of the exhibition.
This prize is very generously sponsored by the Philip Vela Family Trust and
they also purchase the winning artwork for their collection. Success in this
competition has been a springboard for many of the winning artists who
have moved on to significant careers in contemporary art. The judge for 2015
is Dr Anne Kirker, an art consultant, exhibition curator, writer and expert on
Australian and international prints, drawings and photography.
The exhibition is FREE to the public and features an opportunity to vote for
the Peoples’ Choice award. The popular favourite wins a prize of art materials
donated by Gordon Harris.
