Camp Hours:
The Stony Brook School, founded in
1922, is an independent, coeducational,
college preparatory, boarding and day
school for grades 7-12. The School’s
motto, Character Before Career, is the
foundation of a Stony Brook education.
Summer Programs, founded in 1959,
uphold the mission and motto of the
school, providing an environment that
fosters character development and
personal growth in young people.
Daily activities incorporate five areas of
personal growth: physical, intellectual,
emotional, social, and spiritual. Our staff
provides enthusiastic and caring supervision of all children. Each staff member
shares a commitment to exemplifying
morality in motive, thought, action and
responsibility to others. Each camp
department has a rich curriculum led by
an expert in his/her field. Heads of camp
and counselors are rigorously trained to
implement all aspects of the program.
Every camp counselor is assigned a small
group, allowing for a very attentive camp
experience.
This summer we open our newly renovated
indoor swimming pool, which will bring
an added dimension to our camp programs.

You can submit your registration online or
download the registration form .pdf at
www.stonybrookschool.org/summer
or by mailing, faxing, or scanning and emailing
the registration and medical forms with your
check or credit card information. The forms
may also be found in the middle of our
Summer Programs brochure. A $200 deposit is
required per child, per session with the registration and is applied to the cost of the program.
The balance must be paid in full by June 1st,
2015. After June 1st, full payment is required
with each registration. No refunds will be given
except for medical necessity with required
documentation from a physician.

and families of our campers interested in
meeting our team and taking a tour of our
campus. Parents are encouraged to attend
the March 14th & May 2nd open houses
which take place from 1:00-5:00pm.

Golf
Our sports camps have a long and proud tradition of being among the best on
Long Island. Our professional coaches bring excitement and expertise to every aspect of
sports. We go beyond just teaching the skills; our programs have a proven track record of
developing character, perseverance, and confidence. Campers will be taught according
to the “Four Sports Pillars”: Technical, Tactical, Psychological, and Physical.

SBS Sports Camps utilize our outstanding athletic facilities, including 4 soccer fields,
an indoor swimming pool, 6 tennis hard courts, the Robert S. Swanson Gymnasium,
Kinney Field House, and Buyers’ Park. Each child will receive a camp shirt and a ball
or cap, depending on the sport. Awards will be given at the end of each camp. We offer
discounts to teams that sign up for any of the sports camps as a group of 5 or more.

The Stony Brook Tennis Camp
provides a dynamic teaching program.
We have assembled and trained an
accomplished coaching staff that will
teach biomechanics and tactics for all
levels of play. Each student receives
personal attention in player to coach
ratios of 4 to 1. Throughout the week,
this core tennis program shifts between
technical, tactical, physical, and mental
aspects of tennis.
Golf camp introduces the game of golf
to beginners and allows more experienced players to improve their skills.
Campers receive instruction from golf
professionals as well as our experienced
instructors utilizing the driving range,
putting green, and other facilities at our
off-campus location. After the instructional period, campers are given the
opportunity to play the course. Golfers
should come prepared with their own
bags (5 clubs minimum), sneakers or
soft spikes, 6 golf balls and tees, golf
glove (optional), hat, rain gear, sun
block, lunch, and water bottle. $885
Mornings focus on technique while
afternoons are geared toward matchplay
strategy, all of which are recorded by
on-the-court cameras and analyzed by
our teaching professionals. $840

From beginners to high school players,
our camp will challenge you to raise your
game. Instruction is fast-paced, engaging,
and impactful. Players will work on every
aspect of their game, including ballhandling, defense, passing, shooting,
rebounding, decision-making, spacing,
situational strategy, and athleticism.
Team-building is reinforced during fun
morning activities and daily games each
afternoon. The Stony Brook School
campus offers five, full-court basketball
courts with 16 baskets in total, along with
ample facilities for fitness training. $445
Whether you are an experienced team
soccer player or just learning the game, our
versatile soccer camp will challenge all
levels of play. Players will learn proper
passing, dribbling, and shooting
techniques. Advanced strategies on breaking down defenders and containing offensive players is also an important aspect of
the program. Afternoon games reinforce
the day’s lesson and each camper’s newly
acquired skills. The camp concludes with
a camp tournament to crown a camp
champion. Families are invited
to attend. Athletes must bring
their own shin guards and

Mini Sports will give campers the opportunity to try a
variety of sports including track and field, tee ball,
basketball, flag football, soccer, tennis, and more. Our
goal is to provide a foundation in a variety of sports for
campers to build upon as they mature. Mini-Sports
campers will go on a number of exciting day trips to
local venues. A morning and afternoon snack will be
provided. Swimming, swim instruction, and other
water activities add another level of fun. $660

Sailing & Marine Science Novices to Advanced
Our outstanding marine programs
directed by Capt. George Linzee, ASA and
US Sail Certified, instructor offer on-the
water experiences for novice to advanced
sailors who desire to excel in sailing,
regatta competition, cruising, powerboat
navigation, and marine/environmental
sciences. Sea time and leadership training
can lead to instructor certification and a
Captain’s license at age 17.
By attending multiple two-week sessions,
novices have the opportunity to become
advanced sailors. Under the guidance
of our US Sailing and ASA certified
instructors many of our past campers
have become successful high school and
collegiate dinghy sailors. They have also
aquired ASA keelboat certification in 30 to 34 foot yachts,
learn to drive 13 to 36 foot
power boats, complete the NY
State Safe Boating Course,
earn their USCG licenses,
and become instructors through
our “Captains In Training”
CIT program.

We have been doing STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Math education) for a long time! Beachcombers and
Marine Explorers offer opportunities to
study the various marine, environmental,
and nautical sciences while learning to
sail keelboats and powerboats that
essentially become classrooms on the sea.
Activities include fishing, seining,
plankton collection, swimming, tubing,
body surfing, keeping marine animals in
saltwater aquaria, and field trips to
Atlantis Marine World Aquarium.
Our vessels and facilities are state of
the art and well equipped. The marine
programs utilize The Stony Brook
School’s facilities located in Port
Jefferson Harbor. These include a 200
foot floating dock, 7 keelboats (25-34
ft.), 23 interscholastic 420s and Laser
dinghies, 3 Daysailors (17ft.), 6 powerboats (12-24 ft.), and “BEACON,” a 36
ft. aft cabin fast trawler that serves as a
marine lab, restroom, and safety center.
This facility hosts summer and school
year dinghy regattas for middle and high
school sailors.
NY State Safe Boating
Course
All individuals born on or after 5/1/96 are
now required to successfully complete an
approved course in boater education to
operate a motorboat. Participants must be
at least 10 years old. This course takes
place after the camp day from 4pm-6pm.

Dinghy Regatta Series
SBS Summer Marine Programs is hosting
a Monday Evening Regatta Series that will
run from 5pm until 30 minutes after sunset. Starts will be provided for 420s and
Lasers. Sailors may use their own boat or
charter one from SBS. Regatta fees will be
$10 per sailor and an additional $20 to
charter an SBS boat. Experienced sailors
from grades 9 to 12 are eligible to apply.
Monday Evening
July 6, 13, 20, 27 & Aug 3
Family Sunset Sails
Parents of campers can also enjoy the
SBS sailing experience with their
children by signing up for a sunset sail
on a 34 ft. cruising keelboat. These 3
hour evening excursions start at 6 PM
and are available on selected Fridays &
Saturdays. Capt. George Linzee and
other SBS staff will captain a SBS yacht
with up to six passengers on the Long
Island Sound to experience the beauty
of the setting sun. The trip begins and
ends at the Port Jefferson Public Launch
Service parking lot located at 150 Beach
Street on the west side of Port Jefferson
Harbor. Trips may be rescheduled due to
inclement weather. Families are welcome
to bring their own picnic supper. Fees
are $50 per adult and $25 per child
between the ages of 6 and 18.

Regatta Series
Marine Programs enter three keelboats
in the Setauket Yacht Club’s Spring and
Summer Tuesday Night Regatta Series
that run from 5:30 to 9:30 PM. SBS
captains George Linzee, Mike Sawka,
and John Everitt are now signing up
teams for the 2015 7-race Spring Series
that starts June 2 and the 7-race Summer
Series that starts July 21. Fees per participant are $20 per regatta and $100 per
series. The boats will also compete in the
June 13 Harbor Cup and the August 15
Cancer Society Saturday Regattas.

Learn the joys of life
aboard a sailboat as you
cruise the waters of Long
Island Sound. Two classic
34 foot auxiliary cruising
sloops, a Tartan 34 and
a Morgan 34, are utilized
to immerse both novice
and experienced participants
in a two-week program that
includes boat handling, sail
training, seamanship, racing,
navigation, environmental awareness, and
how to live and cruise aboard a wellequipped yacht. Island Cruisers will also
have the opportunity to learn how to
operate BEACON, our new 36 foot aft
cabin, twin diesel, cruising trawler. In

addition to training, the schedule
includes day-sail excursions and a
two-day overnight cruise to exciting
destinations such as Northport Yacht
Club and Norwalk Maritime Center.
Island Cruisers are assigned to a
particular keelboat by age, gender and
experience. They receive training
appropriate to their skill level. Advanced
students can take the ASA Keelboat
certification course. Invite a friend to
join the program and they will be placed
on the same crew. For sailors over 15,
seatime counts towards a USCG
captain’s license. $930

This program led by Capt. John Everitt is
ideal for all sailors who want to learn how
to sail and race in high performance
dinghies. The curriculum includes the
use of 3 Daysailors, 18 collegiate two-man
420s, 2 club 420s (spinnaker and
trapezes), and 3 Laser oneman dinghies.
Participants are immersed in fleet and
team racing regatta competitions. US Sail
certified instructors will help sailors of all
skill levels, both beginning and advanced,
progress through crewing and skippering
roles and prepare for interscholastic
sailing competition. This program is
beneficial for students who may want to
start a sailing team in their own school
during the academic year. Training
includes shore instruction, water drills,
video evaluation of development, racing
rules, and regatta competition. $840

Beachcombers

Beachcombers have fun observing,
studying, and collecting marine life from
sailing keelboats and powered marine
science lab vessels. Starting each day in
an internet-connected marine lab,
participants learn about life in the sea
and how to set up saltwater aquaria.
Beachcombers then go to Port Jefferson
Harbor where age appropriate sail
training takes place with an experienced
captain on a 25' to 28' keelboat. They will
explore and collect marine samples from a
17' Boston Whaler skiff, go fishing on a 24'
Grady-White power boat and participate
in activities on BEACON, our new 36'
cruising trawler that is a classroom and
safety station on the harbor. Daily
activities can also include swimming,
tubing, salt marsh beach hikes, an ocean
beach day, and a visit to the Atlantis
Aquarium in Riverhead. $840

Marine Explorers

Grades 7-10
A good oceanographer makes a good
sailor. Marine Explorers learn weather,
tides, currents, waves, shore formations,
marine life, and navigation as they
learn to sail and race three 30' cruising
keelboats in Port Jefferson Harbor and
Long Island Sound. Marine Explorers
bond together with fun team-building
activities as they become proficient sailors
who know how to handle wind, waves,
currents, and other boats. Our American
Sailing Association instructor and Capt.
teaches keelboat sailing, racing tactics,
self-sufficiency and leadership skills. A
well-equipped oceanography lab with
Internet is also provided to support onthe-water training. This program includes
a trip to an ocean beach to learn about
and enjoy the waves. Marine Explorers
may elect to participate in a day of fishing
on a 24' Grady White powerboat or go
tubing as an option to a sailing day. For
those over age 15, sea-time counts towards
a USCG captain’s license. $840

Nature Quest

Nature Quest is a program for those who love nature and enjoy being outdoors.
Activities include daily hiking trips to local nature preserves, exploring local ecosystems,
photographing nature, and canoeing. On these field trips, campers will observe and
learn about native mammals, birds, trees, plants, and insects under the guidance of a
professional naturalist with over 20 years of experience. Campers will learn practical
ways that they can care for the environment and conserve natural resources. Projects
include restoration of native habitats and a nature-themed wood-working project.
Outings to local beaches for swimming, a campus “slip and slide”, a bio lab with animals,
and a community service project will provide an ideal balance of fun, learning, and
service. $795

The Explorers program is a must for
active campers who love the outdoors!
Each day, campers set out for an exciting
adventure on Long Island. Typical
explorations include hiking through
Long Island’s state and county parks,
biking on the Rocky Point or Glacier
Ridge trails, indoor rock climbing,
canoeing the Stony Brook Harbor, and
swimming at different beaches.
Explorers need to bring a suitable mountain bike and helmet on biking days.
A schedule of planned trips
is provided at the start of

Adventure Explorers (Advanced)

The first week of “Adventure Explorers”
includes biking, hiking, and climbing
activities. On the second week, we
embark on a 3 day/2 night camping trip
in the tri-state area. Most recently we
hiked the Labyrinth at Mount Mohonk
in the Worthington State Forest.
Each camper's skill and ability will be
evaluated the first two days of the
session to ensure proper placement in
this exciting outdoor program. Due to
the off-campus nature ofthe program,
all participants must bring their own
lunch and water bottle each day. This
program is limited to 12, so register
early! $875

of America (FEA)

Future Engineers of America (FEA) is an
exciting, hands-on science program filled
with adventure, exploration, and skill
development. Utilizing The Stony Brook
School’s science and computer labs, along
with trips to Long Island science education
sites, FEA engages young learners in a range
of fun activities that instill a desire to
explore science and technology as a creative
part of their lives. Included are aviation
and rocketry projects, physical science
experiments, engineering challenge contests, and initial computer training. The
weekly schedule rotates each day so
participants experience a range of other
activities that include outdoor games, lifevalue discussions, and an exciting field trip
in addition to their science activities. $805

Advanced FEA builds on the science
foundation taught in our FEA program
and takes students to higher levels of
technological development. More
advanced building and programming of
robots as well as leading-edge advances in
science and medicine will be explored. The
program also introduces the study of alternative energies – solar, wind, and water –
and the fundamental scientific concepts
behind these technologies. Computer
skills with media technologies will be
introduced and used by the students for
presentations. Instructors will guide the
design of advanced projects to maximize
student input and creativity. Balancing
the day with stewardship, worldview
discussions, active team-building
challenges and leadership skills instill
a positive group spirit. Educational
field trips are also included in the
Advanced FEA program. $845

Junior Brookers is the ideal introduction
to all of the specialty summer programs.
Junior Brookers is a co-ed introductory
program that combines physical, social,
and academic growth to prepare young
people for elementary and middle school.
Under the guidance of experienced
elementary school instructors, the
participants are involved in a variety of
fun, hands-on educational activities that
encourage positive life values and healthy
creative endeavors. This summer’s theme
include studying the Ocean, the Solar
System, and Nature in our backyard.
Our summer program offers educational
activities that encourage curiosity and
foster critical thinking skills. These
activities include creating an indoor
ocean and classroom planetarium;
interaction with live marine and land
animals; a daily visit to our math lab to
keep math facts fresh; daily music
appreciation and art sessions for
cultivating creative ideas; introductions
to sailing, canoeing, seining, and fishing;
swim lessons and other water activities
round out the program. The group will
go on at least three field trips each week.
Past field trips included Holtsville
Ecology Center, Port Jefferson Harbor,
West Meadow Beach, Sweet Briar
Nature Center, and the Vanderbilt
Planetarium. A morning and afternoon
snack will be provided. $770
Explore the exciting world of
dinosaurs! Each day, we will
discover something different
about the prehistoric world.
Topics will include anatomy,
behavior, fossils, geography,
dinosaur types, and other
amazing animals that lived at
the time of the dinosaurs.
Additionally, there will be 2

The Elementary Tutorial Program, supervised by Debra Denson, is designed to meet
the specialized academic needs of the children in our Summer Programs. Children
may receive daily small group instruction 1
hour before the program day starts and up
to 2 hours at the end of the day. Tutorials
are individually tailored to each child’s
needs based on both the tutor’s assessment
and parental input. This program specializes in the review, reinforcement, and development of reading, math, and writing skills
to support the new Common Core
Standards. Although all materials are provided, students may bring in any work or
projects that may require assitance. Weekly
updates will be provided to parents.
Two-week session rates:
$250 for 10 one-hour per day tutorials,
$450 for 10 two-hour per day tutorials,
$600 for 10 three-hour per day tutorials.
AVERAGE IMPROVEMENT
IS 250 POINTS

includes test-taking strategies, skill development, timed drills, and individual feedback. The courses begin with an initial
SAT test on Sunday afternoon from 2-6
pm. Instruction is given during evening
classes Monday through Thursday, from
6:30-9:30pm, for the following two
weeks. The course then concludes with a
final SAT test on the following Sunday
from 2-6 pm. The SAT prep course fee
covers all instructional material. $895

The Stony Brook International Piano
Festival honoring Jorge Bolet is a two
week immersion program for middle and
high school students who are serious
about piano study. Students receive two
or three private lessons each week from
faculty members, along with supervised
daily practice, and master classes
taught by guest artists. Performance
opportunities include a recital at Carson
Auditorium, an outreach concert and a
final concert at New York City’s
Steinway Hall. Other enrichment
opportunities include concerts and
lectures by guest performers and minicourses on related subjects such as music
theory, piano literature, and practice
methods. This two week residential
program also includes cultural excursions
to New York City, as well as outings
to nearby Port Jefferson Harbor and
historic Stony Brook Village. Tuition
includes lodging, meals, transportation
to and from the airport, private lessons,
concert admission fees, and two
field trips to New York City. $2,650

Policies and Terms
Registration Contract
A $200 deposit per child, per session that is refundable until May 1st must be submitted with the
Registration Contract in order to reserve a place for
each child and will be applied to the cost. The
balance must be paid in full by June 1st, 2015.
After June 1st, full payment is required with each
Registration Contract. The Registration Contract
is binding and, by signing, the patron is responsible
for full payment of all fees, even if the child stops
attending, except in cases of illness or injury.
Refund Policy
In cases of sickness or injury, fees will be prorated
with required documentation from a physician.
No refunds will be given for absenteeism due
to change in family plans, vacation, or similar
reasons. We reserve the right to dismiss a child
without refund if conduct is detrimental to his or
her well being or the well being of any other child
or staff. The parent accepts these terms by signing
the Registration Contract.
Medical Forms
We are required by NYS law to have an on file
medical form, with an immunization record, which
must be completed by both a parent and a doctor
before the child begins camp. The medical form is
included in the brochure and online at
www.stonybrookschool.org. Failure to submit a
completed medical form to the camp will result in
a refusal to allow the child to attend camp. In an
attempt to regulate this issue, we will not allow
children to be dropped off at the car line if we do
not have the medical form in hand. Only medical
exams after July 1, 2014 will be accepted.
Lost or Stolen Property
Please mark all clothing with nametags. If your
child loses something, please call the Summer
Programs office (631)751-1800 ext. #595 and
plan to retrieve the item promptly. Items will be
donated to charity after the last session.
We assume no responsibility for lost or stolen
property and discourage children from bringing
anything of value, such as jewelry, money, or
expensive clothing, to camp.

Rates and Services
Accident Insurance
Each child is covered by accident insurance. This
limited benefit coverage is secondary to parent’s
primary medical insurance. After a $25 deductible,
the policy will pay for medical bills incurred while
your child is at camp, provided any and all other
parent’s medical insurance has been exhausted.
Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures
For the safety of all children, a counselor will escort
your child to and from your vehicle as you drop-off
or pick-up on Chapman Parkway. If you need to
stay for any time, please park in the lot behind
Johnston Hall, which is accessible from Cedar
Street. If you drop off a child early (before 8:00am)
or pick a child up late (after 4:00pm), the child will
be placed in the Extended Day Program and you
will be required to pay the fees incurred. SBS Camp
must be notified by written note, call, text or email
if someone other than the parent is picking up the
camper.
Extended Day
The Extended Day Program is designed with the
working family in mind. If a parent needs to bring a
child to Summer Programs early, Extended Day is
available from 7 am to 8 am. Likewise, if a child
needs to be picked up after the program is over,
Extended Day is available from 4 pm to 6 pm.
There is an $8 hourly rate, or a $100 per session
charge for this service. Please pre-pay only if you
intend on using 13 hours or more of this service.
Prohibited Items
Electronic devices for music, gaming, and messaging
are not permitted. Cell phones may not be used
except in case of emergency with permission from a
counselor. The use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs
by children and staff is strictly prohibited on The
Stony Brook School campus.
Details
• We reserve the right to cancel any program due to
lack of registration or any unforseen circumstances.
• As a non-profit institution, The Stony Brook
School is not required to provide a taxpayer
identification number. On any form requiring such
a number, you may enter “Tax Exempt.”
