Pat Coyne and Jerry Nichols Co-Chair Finance Committee 1 February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, Having escaped the Blizzard of the Century, I would like to share with you some of the responses that I received from the ten inner city parishes that St. John Vianney Parish was able to assist at Christmas time. I’m sure they will lift your spirits as they did mine. Msgr. Fred Britto of St. Cyprian Church in West Philadelphia writes: “Every week I run into a parishioner of mine who informs me that they have lost their job and therefore must make adjustments in their financial giving. Their pain becomes our pain. Their financial situation becomes a financial situation for the parish. Extra financial assistance that comes our way is greatly appreciated. I want to thank you and the parishioners of St. John Vianney Parish for your kindness and thoughtfulness toward our parishioners.” Msgr. Hugh Shields, Pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Philadelphia writes: “A heartfelt Thank You to you and the good people of St. John Vianney Parish for the very generous donation of $5,000. Your continued support of our mission in this culturally diverse community in South Philadelphia not only allows us to continue providing the services that are needed, but also provides the positive energy our staff and volunteers need to continue on with the work they are doing.” Father Steve Thorne, Pastor of St. Martin de Porres Church in North Philadelphia writes: “Your gift has brought some light where there was darkness before. You have enabled Saint Martin de Porres Parish to brighten up Christmas: to help with heat or light; to provide some clothing; to send a basket of food; to help someone to find a place to live. For anyone who struggles just to meet the necessities of life, one of the greatest sufferings (the “darkness”) is the sense of being alone. You have assured the people in North Philadelphia that they are not alone”. Father Tom Higgins, Pastor of Holy Innocents Parish in North Philadelphia writes: I am most grateful to you and your parish for your assistance to Holy Innocents. Your gift of $5,000.00 will be applied to the Pastor’s Tuition Fund. This year our tuition assistance funds have assisted some 78 families with over $29,000 in assistance. Your donation will allow us to continue helping those in most need.” Father Peter Quinn, Pastor of Divine Mercy Church, writes: “When I came to Divine Mercy Parish in June, 2013, I told the people that I wanted to save their parish. Your donation last year meant so much to me. Last year I cut many expenditures, reduced the staff to part time and called on people to volunteer. In the fiscal year 2014-2015, I saved some expense in our music ministry by asking more volunteers to be cantors or choir members or organists. I tried to increase the Sunday offerings but, even though people try, it was not very successful since many of them are refugees or migrants from Asia or Africa. Meanwhile some good Caucasian parishioners either died or moved.” These are just a few of the many wonderful letters that I received through your generosity to those needy people in the inner city parishes in Philadelphia. On behalf of all the recipients of your generosity, I thank you for your goodness to others. Have a good week ahead. God bless you all. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton, Pastor 2 February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time PRAY FOR All those serving in defense of our Country, both at home and abroad, especially Captain Christopher S. Using the Great Adventure Bible Timeline learning system you will walk through the Bible with greater understanding - Reading the Word, Watching a DVD and Faith sharing. Simply prepare an extra portion of meat, starch, and vegetable when you cook. Containers are available at the entrances of the church. So think about the needy when you are shopping too. If you have no-longer-being-used instruments that you would like to donate, we will also collect them at the recital and donate them to the shelter. If you have any questions call Clara Hilberts 484-4204261 or Jane Young, 610-941-1160. THANK YOU for any help you can give.
