Ware Wheel
Year 70 ‘Volume 444’
Ware Rotary Club’s Monthly Bulletin
From the Editor Alan Thomas
As members will know Alan Mills has decided to
resign from the Club. Alan and I have not always
seen eye to eye and have entered into lively
‘debate’ on more than one occasion. Alan has
however been a terrific Rotarian since joining the
Club in January 1999. He was President in 2008/9
and I enjoyed very much working with him as
Club Secretary.
He has also held the Office of Assistant secretary, been Speaker finder, and of
course served on the International Committee for many years, some as
Chairman. His work for African people and in particular Sierra Leone earned
him a much deserved Paul Harris Fellowship and who could ever forget his
determination with ‘Matching Grants’! He may be a bit like ‘marmite’ to some
people but he will be sorely missed. Let us hope that after a period of reflection
he will reconsider and re-join us. I for one would welcome him back.
Alan
PLEASE NOTE
The next edition of the Ware Wheel will be the March
Edition, which will be distributed on 4th March.

Roger’s Rambling’s
A Happy New Year everyone. I trust that
you all had a good Christmas and are now
looking forward to a busy year ahead.
Whilst thanking you all for your efforts in
the past year I would like to give special
thanks to Denise and her team who rang
doorbells, rapped on knockers and rang
hand bells during the Father Christmas
collections around Stapleford and Wattonat-Stone.
Our biggest thanks however must go to those Friends of Rotary and
certain family members without whose help we as a club would be
struggling to carry out many of our events during the year.
On Monday 2nd. February the five clubs, i.e. Hertford, Amwell,
Hoddesdon, Hertford Shires and ourselves are holding a joint
meeting at Wodson Park. The speaker will be Rt.Hon. David Blunkett
M.P. and I hope that you will make this meeting a great success.
Guests are of course welcome.
At our meeting on 11th February we will be welcoming our District
Governor, Jenny Muir, to Ware. Jenny is a very enthusiastic speaker
and I am sure that you will all be encouraged by her passion for
Rotary.
Yours in Rotary,
Roger

Gpa was struggling to find words to ramble on with this month
(surprising really as usually it is a struggle to shut him up) and
therefore I thought I would ramble on about my Grandpa to make a
change for you all. Gramps is “unique” to put it politely.
I’m not sure if many of you have heard, but he has many little clubs
on the go. Apart from the Rotary Club of Ware, he loves to sing! He is
a member of…brace yourselves… the Lytton Players, Letchworth
Arcadians, Stevenage Male Voice Choir and Ware Operatic. Over the
years I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform as a bumble bee,
a dame and a chicken in La fille mal gardé. He is also a member of
The Octones where they sing to the elderly, even though he is part of
this age bracket himself. You would think he would be fed up with
music by the time he gets home, but oh no! He constantly hums and
sings to himself and often I get summoned to the computer to watch a
musical YouTube clip he has found (they are usually German folk
tunes). I regret introducing him to YouTube.
In addition to his musical hobbies, Gpa is also a part of a Bonsai club.
For those of you who don’t know what this entails, basically people
bring their miniature trees to a show and tell session just to admire
the other mini trees. If this wasn’t enough, he is also a part of a Cloud
Appreciation society. Gramps is not just a one trick pony!
Hope you all have enjoyed getting to know my Gramps a little better!
Jess Owen
(Roger’s eldest grandchild who loves him very much really)

GARY C.K. HUANG
President 2014-15
January 2015
At the beginning of this Rotary year, I asked Rotarians
everywhere to Light Up Rotary by holding a Rotary Day.
How you do this is something I'm leaving up to you: It can
be a full day or just a few hours. It can be organized by your
club, by your district, or even across your entire country. It
can be a service project, a festival, or any kind of event you
want. As long as it's open to the community, embraces the
whole family of Rotary, and is fun, it's a Rotary Day.
The goal of a Rotary Day is to shine a light on Rotary. For many years, we in Rotary
felt that it wasn't appropriate to boast about our good work. We felt it was best to
serve quietly and let our work speak for itself. But today, in many communities,
people aren't even aware that they have a local Rotary club. Not because the clubs
aren't strong, or because they aren't serving well. They are. But if Rotarians don't talk
about their work, people will never know about it.
It is time for us to Light Up Rotary and let people know what we are doing. In the
first half of this Rotary year, I've been thrilled to see how many Rotarians have taken
up my Rotary Day challenge. I've attended Rotary Days in so many places, including
the Philippines, Korea, China, the United States, Turkey, India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka,
and Bangladesh. Everyone has been different, and everyone has met the challenge to
Light Up Rotary in its own way.
If you've organized a Rotary Day in your community, tell us about it: Email details
and photos of your event to [email protected], with "Rotary Day" as your subject
line. We'll do our best to feature as many Rotary Days as possible in the coming
months.
And if you haven't planned a Rotary Day yet, why not? It's a great way to share your
love for Rotary with your community. When we tell others about Rotary and let them
know how membership can enrich their lives, we share a gift that was given to us
when we were invited to join our clubs. By passing that gift on, we help ensure that
Rotary, and its service, will endure for generations to come.

It is with great sadness I have to tell you that T very sadly passed
away peacefully on December 14th, 2014, with her devoted Roy by her
side.
When T was admitted into hospital on December 4th she wrote the
following on her Save5 Facebook page:
"For the past week I have been feeling really tired. Yesterday I was
admitted to Papworth. Receiving the best possible care possible.
Thank you so much for all your support. It meant the world to me. I
won't be answering any comments as I need to rest.
Lizzie will update you if needs be.
Thank you once again my friends.
Enjoy your life and make the most of it.
Lots of love and hugs always.xxxxxx"

Dear Alan,
What a lovely surprise! I was delighted to learn that the little cuddly orangutan
fetched £100 in your raffle and very grateful to receive the cheque.
I had heard Dom and his talk were well received, but not that the price of metal
had scuppered the can project. What a pity! I am sure we could find another
project close to Dom’s heart if you would like to rekindle interest in supporting
a specific Durrell project (although maybe you have already discussed this with
Dom). He is very keen on the Livingstone’s fruit bat, which is the rarest
mammal in the collection here, as well as the pied tamarin, who is so endangered
by living near Manaus, the most rapidly expanding city in the world.
Thank you for continuing to think about us!
With very best wishes for 2015,
Lee Durrell
Honorary Director, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
Hi Alan
Great stuff, thanks ever so much for thinking of Durrell and its mission.
See you later
Cheers

A long Walk
Stand proud noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls!
Recent studies found that the average golfer walks 900miles a year!
Another study found that the average golfer drinks 22 gallons of beer in a year!
This means on average that golfers get 41 miles to the gallon!
Should kind of make you proud, to compare with a hybrid car.
That’s all for this month.

2015 SUPER DRINK
Direct from the Forest
The super drink of the moment Birch Water. Extracted from Silver Birch trees,
only 18 calories per 100ml and is rich in nutrients like vitamin C and potassium.
Has been an herbal remedy in Eastern Europe, Russia and Scandinavia for
many years, said to aid those with kidney stones, headaches (most of us) eczema
and even cellulite!
The extracted Birch water is infused (just like a tea bag but not the same taste)
with natural sugars, antioxidant vitamins, hydrating electrolytes, minerals
copper, calcium, zinc and magnesium, also it contains saponins that are said to
have powerful cholesterol reducing properties!
“Saponins” are mainly found in legumes such as soya beans and peas; this was
stated by “AZIMA Govindji of the British Dietetic Association.
Another super ingredient that the Birch Water contains is Xylitol, and sweeter
with 40% less calories than sugar.
So far I have not tried it or seen it in the shops, the product is not yet passed by
the European Food Safety Authority, but Govindji is happy to recommend it as
a very healthy drink. Price wise who knows? Before rushing out to buy or
emigrate to Russia check the exchange rate and have a word with Dilip your
trusted pharmacist.
I have done my bit over to you Dilip, share the fortunes with me!!!!!!!
I need a need a drink.

POETS CORNER
I like poetry, especially the humorous variety, so here's one that tickled me.
The Bishop's Mistake
The bishop glanced through his window pane
On a world of sleet, and wind, and rain
When a dreary figure met his eyes
That made the bishop soliloquise.
And as the bishop gloomily thought
He ordered pen and ink be brought,
Then ‘Providence Watches' he plainly wrote
And pinned the remark to a ten bob note.
Seizing his hat from his lordly rack
And wrapping his cloak around his back,
Across the road the bishop ran
And gave the note to the shabby man.
That afternoon was the bishop's 'at home'
When everyone gathered beneath his dome,
Curate and canon from far and near
Came to partake of the bishop's cheer.
There in the good bishop's hall
Stood a stranger lean and tall,
“Your winnings, my lord” he cried. “Well doneProvidence Watches, at ten to one.”
It is to be noted on Sunday next
The bishop skilfully chose his text,
And from the pulpit earnestly told
Of the fertile seed that returned tenfold.

For The Love of Golf
In my hand I hold a ball
White and dimpled, rather small.
Oh how bland it does appear
The harmless looking little sphere
By its size I could not guess
The awesome strength it does posses
But since I fell beneath its spell, I’ve
Gone through the fires of hell
My life has not been the same
Since I chose to play this stupid game.
It rules my mind for hours on end
A fortune it has made me spend
It makes me curse and made me cry
I hate myself and want to die.
It promises a thing called par
If I hit straight and far
To master such a tiny sphere
Should not be very hard at all,
My desires, the sphere refuses
And does exactly as it chooses.
Not often it has a whim
Hits a tree or takes a swim
With miles of grass on which to land
It finds a patch of sand.
Then I offer up my sole only
If the sphere would find the hole
It’s made me whimper like a pup
I swear I will give it up.
And take a drink to ease my sorrow
But the tiny sphere knows
I’ll be back tomorrow.

I went to the Dementia Café in Fletchers Lea on Tuesday 13th February
accompanied by my wife Anne and John Seager. This was their first meeting
since the 9th December and was very lively.
We were pleased to present another 48 cups, saucers and spoons that the Club
agreed to buy before Christmas and they were very well received. The
organizers asked me to express their grateful thanks to Club. They cost more
than I asked for, about £90 as the special offer was no longer available. Still a
bargain at less than £2 per setting.
Our attendance at the Café’ is very much appreciated. Perhaps a few of you
could join me, John S .and John L sometime. Always the 2nd Tuesday of the
month from 10.00 to 12.00.
Julian. (Time traveller?)
The Father Christmas collection in Stapleford and Watton-at Stone raised
£1076-00 for The Jubilee House Care Trust Ltd.
A big thank you to all that came out to see us and to give so generously.
Thank you to Alan & Christine Grant, Jamie Johnson, Jenny Horlock & the
Meischke family, for their help,
A thank you also to the Rotarians that did turn out.
Denise.

NEW RESEARCH
Oxford University researchers have discovered the heaviest element
yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv),
has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198
assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which
are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called
pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However,
it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it
comes into contact.
A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would
normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to
complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It
does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a
portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange
places.
In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since
each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons,
forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some
scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons
reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred
to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium
becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just
as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks
but twice as many morons.

THE RISE.
Employee: Excuse me sir, may I talk to you?
Boss: Sure, come on in… What can I do for you?
Employee: Well sir, as you know, I have been an employee of this
prestigious firm for over ten years.
Boss: Yes. Employee: I won't beat around the bush. Sir, I would like a rise.
I currently have four companies after me and so I decided to talk to
you first.
Boss: A rise? I would love to give you a rise, but this is just not the
right time.
Employee: I understand your position, and I know that the current
economic down turn has had a negative impact on sales,
But
you must also take into consideration my hard work, pro-activeness
and loyalty to this company for over a decade.
Boss: OK, taking into account these factors, and considering I don't
want to start a brain drain, I'm willing to offer you a ten per cent rise
and an extra five days holiday. How does that sound?
Employee: Great! It's a deal. Thank you, sir!
Boss: Before you go, just out of curiosity, what companies are after
you?
Employee: Oh, um, the Electric Company, Gas Company, Water
Company and the Mortgage Company!

Rotary’s Four Way Test
Of the things we say or do
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better relationships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The Object of Rotary is ….
To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and
foster : The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for
service,
High ethical standards in business and the professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all occupations and the
dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity
to serve society,
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s
personal, business and community life,
And the advancement of international understanding,
goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business
and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
