Newsletter Saturday 31 January 2015 - apologies for late delivery (FW) What you missed this week Lunch meeting: Carol Green started off the year for us with a very stimulating and timely presentation about healthy eating. Carol advocates the Zone approach for managing eating. Some interesting ideas were: · On protein: When you eat protein, you should only eat the equivalent of the area and depth of the palm of your hand. · On carbs: All plants have carbs and all carbs turn into sugar in the body. When you think about eating carbs, be aware of whether they are sparse or dense in sugars. · On fats: Fats don’t make us fat, sugars do. Fats give us a feeling of fullness. · Eating to reduce the inflammation in the body: Foods either increase or decrease inflammation. It is inflammation that is associated with the development of diseases such as cancer and arthritis. Five minute speakers Andrew Miller gave us an introduction to his very interesting life and work. The contrasts were amazing. They included a childhood in various vicarages, a few years in the regular army, working in forestry businesses in Latvia (note his mention of the Latvian mafia!), demanding jobs in telecommunications across Europe and most recently, NZ head of Alcatel-Lucent. And of course he’s quite a rugby head – has to be having been born in South Wales. Dr Margaret Sparrow outlined the Zonta Science Awards and gave the club an album outlining the various past winners. The club supports these awards in the past, via grants from the John Ilott Trust. If you would like to see the album of winners, let me know. Sergeant James Austin roamed far and wide in his knowledge of the activities of club members over the break and created an interesting sergeant’s session. Congratulations to Jenn Little who did a wonderful job of leading the National Anthem at the Trentham Races this weekend. James also pointed out that our honorary member; Archbishop John Dew was made a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Congratulations to Pat Walsh on his award of Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, in the recent New Year’s Honours. Resignations: · Elisa Mendzela is transferring to the Pencarrow Club because its location and meeting time suits other commitments. Our thanks to Elisa for her work organising the vocational visits. · Stephen Matthews is still travelling, so has decided to resign. We hope he will rejoin when he returns to Wellington. Don’t miss the lunch meeting next week: Tony Fryer is speaking on the Rotary Foundation. For newer members, the Foundation is the cornerstone of Rotary’s international service providing grants for an amazing range of purposes. Martin Matthews will lead a short workshop on membership, so that we can get 2015 underway with plenty of membership activity. Other events Tree weeding: We’ve put all that effort into planting trees on Mt Vic and the darn things are getting smothered in weeds. Ian Prisk is organising weeding of the trees at the Alexandra Road site, 9 or 10 am, 21 February and 21 March. Bring gloves and if you have any weeding tools bring those too. Call Ian if you need any further directions: 021 472 819. Ian seems invisible because he is mainly working in Auckland during the week, but he’s doing a great job with the tree planting programme. All aspects of the tree planting programme are great fun to do and a good chance to get to know more members. Would you like to billet two choristers in late April? The Danish Royal Chapel Choir is bringing 30 children to Wellington, Thursday 30 April – Saturday 2 May. The group includes 30 children aged 11- 16, billeted two to a household. Carol Stigley, our very own Consul General for Denmark, will be looking for billets when we return. Members of the Club provided billets on an earlier visit and Carol is looking for repeat support. If you can help, please email Carol: [email protected] Jumbo Tennis: 6 March. Last chance to get your team entered. Raffle tickets will be given out next week. Because things didn’t work out with the John Lennon Art Exhibition, this is our only major fundraising event in this Rotary year. Please give it your support by selling those tickets! Are you interested in a Rotary bowls competition? Two gala afternoons are proposed for 1 and 8 March. Start time: 1 pm, with afternoon tea and time for discussion later. You don’t need to have played bowls before. A one-day trial competition is also being considered for 16 teams on Thursday 26 March at 1 pm It would be great for our members to support this programme and go along to one of the Gala Afternoons to have some fun and learn more about the proposed competition. Enquiries to John Barton by 19 February. [email protected] 027 431 1145. Supper dance: Karori Rotary are organising a supper dance at 7 pm on Friday, 13th February. The dance is at the Brierley Theatre, Wellington College. Air Force Dance Band. $70.00 double, $35.00 single. Proceed to Mary Potter Hospice. Rotary Leadership Institute: 22nd February, 9.30 – 3.00 at Foxton. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how Rotary works and to find out about leadership pathways within clubs and the wider organisation. Let me know if you are interested in attending. The workshop is the first of 3 to be held during the year. Rotary out there Last year a large part of North Korea was flooded. Somehow Rotary managed to get 200 shelter boxes and a team response member into that very closed country. Over 26,000 people were displaced in extreme sub-zero temperatures, 59 people were dead and at least 50 missing. Getting this aid into North Korea involved a classic set of Rotary interconnections. Shanghai Rotarian, Randall Eastman was key to getting access to the disaster area. He had been involved in the Korean Friendship Network for over a decade and he was also in close touch with the Korea Committee for the Promotion of International Trade.
