We had a very exciting week in Kindergarten. The children have been working extremely hard despite having time off due to the storm. We continued to learn about
the five senses. Friday was Fun with Science Day. The Kindergarteners used their
five senses with a sugar and salt experiment. They had to figure out which bag had
sugar and which bag had salt with their eyes, nose ears, mouth and hands. The children gave the teachers some really great answers. Someone said that Bag 1 felt like
sand and that Bag 2 smelled like a cupcake. The children had a great time and were
able to figure out that the sense that helped them the most with this science problem
was taste. In Language Arts, we read many versions of the Gingerbread Man. We also read Gingerbread Friends and The Gingerbread Baby. Not all of the endings were
the same. The children loved the fox and enjoyed listening to this classic fairy
tale. We also playing some Math games with gingerbread men and a hide the gingerbread man game. Great fun was had by all. Enjoy your weekend and stay warm during these frigid temperatures.

Fourth Grade Math is enjoying our chapter on Geometry. There is a lot to learn, but
the kids seem to be having little problem with the terminology and the skills. We will
continue working on this chapter for another week or so. In early February we will be
having the 3rd math assessment to see how we are faring with the skills we have
learned to date. Finally, we will continue with our Simple Solutions and Fast Fact
quizzes on Fridays. I am happy to report that the children are improving each week in
both these areas!!
Class 4A had a wonderful time creating their mystery stories and illustrations during
Collins Writing. I am anxious for the boys and girls to share their mysterious tales,
and they too can’t wait!! Throughout Literature Circles the children have truly impressed me with their diligence, effort, and enthusiasm during their meetings. They all
seem to be thoroughly enjoying their novels! We will finish these at the beginning of
next week and from there we will return to our Trophies series for another story or
two. In Religion we wrapped up Lesson 5 and are now moving onto Lesson 6 – The Liturgical Year. Our latest book report has been assigned. Please be sure your child is
reading their story and begins to work on their “People Poster”. As you know next
week is Catholic Schools Week. We will have Channel 4’s new meteorologist coming
for a visit on Thursday, we plan to do a “favorite storybook character dress-up day” on
Wednesday, and there are other activities planned during the week. I can’t believe
January is coming to a close!!
4B-Catholic School's Week is off to a snowy start! We have finished up our unit on
physical science and are moving on to earth science next.
We will begin this unit by studying the rock cycle. We are still working on our literature circle novels in ELA and the students seem to be enjoying the books. We finished
up our "Fortunately" stories and I have really enjoyed reading the creative stories that
were written by the authors of 4B. We are continuing to work on grammar and are
spiraling through the concepts we need to know before entering fifth grade.
4C- In Social Studies the students are learning about the government of the United
States. Next the students will be starting a project, in which, they will work with a
group to create their own countries. In reading the students are building their critical
thinking abilities by analyzing their novel for literature circle. Next week is Catholic
Schools Week. The fourth graders will be participating in a variety of special events.
On Thursday, meteorologist Pamela Gardner will be coming to Saint Agatha School to
talk with the students about weather! On Thursday the students will be asked to come
to school dressed as their favorite book character. This week the students began to
transform their squiggles into a beautiful oops!!
The snow wiped out some of our activities planned for Catholic Schools Week. We will
work on rescheduling what we can.
Religion--We are studying the beginnings of Eucharist.
Math--We will be learning about Volume. Mrs. Sullivan
5B – Mrs. MacCune
This week in Science, students were tested on Chapter 6. We will begin a new chapter
in Science next week, as we move onto our Earth Science unit.
This week in Reading, we continued with our nonfiction unit. We read an informational text about the Everglades. In groups, students identified and visualized the important events involved in the formation and evolution of the Everglades, and we created a class picture timeline that will be displayed in our classroom. Next week, students will be tested on this story, and we will be spending time comparing and contrasting some of the nonfiction texts we’ve read up until this point.
This week in Religion, 5B was tested on Chapter 9. We will be moving onto a new
chapter next week.
In Grade 5, students are creating slide shows to share
biographical information about a famous explorer. We are
focusing on how to meet content requirements in a
presentation and demonstrate skills we know or have learned
about visual design.
Grade 8 saw excerpts from a Boston Pops concert to hear beautiful spirituals by a female vocalist, as we set forth on our "jazz journey."
We will be listening to the twentieth-century "Queen of Scat," Ella Fitzgerald, next.
Grade 7 went to the opera, as we saw excerpts from Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto," with
Luciano Pavarotti singing the famous aria, "La Don' e Mobile." We then saw and
heard the same aria from a production of "Rigoletto" in a 1950's setting. The melody
has often been featured in TV commercials for products like tomato sauce and soap
bubbles!
Grade 6 students are each contributing a page for their classes'
instrument books. We saw an introduction to the four families of instruments in a
film from Disney World, and are applying our knowledge by identifying the instruments we hear when we watch "The Nutcracker."
Mr. Boericke
Grade 6 just finished a lengthy test for our module 2, which we will review and fix up
this week. We are embarking on a unit covering positive and negative numbers in
preparation for some algebra in module 4. Our next test will be after lesson 13.
Grade 7 also just finished up a unit and had a test. Algebra is the focus of our next
module, and we are currently working on simplifying expressions and why this process works the way it does.
Weekly Newsletter
Eighth Grade ELA – Students are working between reading and vocabulary acquisition. In reading, Robert Cormier’s classic mystery novel I Am the Cheese is at the
heart of the current reading comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition is progressing
into the middle lessons of Wordly Wise 9. These unit activities will be followed by
challenging writing activities.
Vocabularily Yours,
Mr. McD.
