We want to live a life where we do not have stress, anxiety and concern about money. Though spiritual way of life would tell us don’t rely on money for your happiness and freedom, to live in society we need money for food, clothing, shelter and few other requirements. Unfortunately for many of us even after we have sufficient money for our basic needs, we don’t achieve financial freedom. Our insecurity, concerns and anxiety for money still remains. First step towards achieving financial freedom is deciding our financial goals. We should make a list of our future financial responsibilities and dreams. Majority of us stumble at this first step. We don’t have the list. Even if we have, it is not articulated or not made in conjunction with spouse and family members. At this stage struggle is between us and our conscious mind. Our conscious mind resists making a list. Mind would give us variety of excuses e.g. I know my requirements at the back of the mind hence there is no need to write it down, I don’t have large wealth; therefore entire exercise is futile, there is no need to include my wife as I am the sole earner, my income is not consistent and hence it is not worthwhile the efforts etc. As a planner I encounter variety of excuses but the fact remains that we need money for future and there is need to articulate those needs. For those who over come conscious mind and make a list face struggle with sub-conscious mind to take actions that will help us achieve our financial goals. This is a bigger struggle. We face this struggle in many walks of life. Let us discuss few areas where we struggle with our sub-conscious mind. Most of us decide to live healthy life, may it be eating healthy food, exercising regularly, sleeping early etc. These are decisions related to physical aspect. We also make some rules for our social life e.g. I will meet my friends regularly, call elders on auspicious days etc. Similarly many decide on leading spiritual life for mental and emotional peace. Above are list of goals which we decide because our conscious mind is convinced that they are good for our well being. Even after knowing consciously most of the time we end up struggling following them. The main reason is the revolt by our sub-conscious mind. Check out how many times in lives we would have listened to nice discourse and decide to live that way and yet moment we come out of it, we do things exactly opposite. Again this is because our conscious mind listened to something and appreciated it. It also felt that living that way is in our benefit but our sub-conscious mind did not remained synchronised with our thought process and went back to our old habits and behaviour. Habits are our best friends and worst enemies. It takes long to develop habits and equally long to modify them. Some of the habits are formed since childhood looking at our elders, many has been developed due to our friends and acquaintance and yet there are some which are formed based on surroundings e.g. impact of media, society we live in etc. Habits are also formed based on what we speak to our mind. If we keep saying I am frugal person, we will live frugally. Ask all those individuals who invariably struggle to keep up time or be punctual. They invariable tell their mind, everyone comes late or busy people come late or it is okay if we go late; world will not fall apart. Instead of saying it is not appropriate to go late, they give themselves excuses. They justify their behaviour and soon their mind starts Do you feel strongly about commenting on any issue of social relevance or on any report we carried? Be it bouquets or bricks, you can explore this space by airing your views, opinions or comments. The best letter, selected once in a week, will receive five tickets for watching a blockbuster at Dana Cinema. Letters can be sent at letters @dt.bh behaving that way. Instead of saying it is okay to go late, if they keep saying I will put in more efforts to be on time, soon they will start becoming punctual. Similarly people who don’t keep their word, use excuses like, I am flexible and amend based on circumstances; there is no point being rigid. Our mind starts believing and behaving the way train it. If we want financial freedom or for that matter achieve things in life, first make our goals. Second train our subconscious mind to take actions consistently to achieve those goals. It will take time. Initially subconscious mind will resist and will not let us change habit. However if we keep persisting, slowing and steadily it will modify. Remember the story of turtle and hare – ‘Slow and steady wins the race.’ Only way to develop a habit is to keep doing it repeatedly. Initially to develop new habit keep reminding our self e.g. write down or draw a picture or photograph etc and place it in a manner that it stays in front of our eyes and whenever we are free keep visualising it. All these will affect our subconscious mind. All those individuals who keep list of their goals in front of their eyes, either written or pictorial are most likely to take appropriate action to achieve them. If they keep taking appropriate action repeatedly it will become habit. If that appropriate action becomes habit, they will eventually achieve their goal. Apart from recent orders given to fighters to limit their exposure, erase the footprint of their online activity and avoid revealing too many place names or faces, the Islamic State and Al-Nusra Front groups are increasingly using the “Dark Web” -- the hidden part of the Internet protected by powerful encryption softwares. “Sometimes we get the A geographical location of some fighters thanks to Facebook,” said Philippe Chadrys, in charge of the fight against terrorism at France’s judicial police. “Some even publish it on the public part of their account. That gives us elements to build a case.” In November, Flavien Moreau, a 28-year-old jihadist who travelled to Syria and then returned to France, was jailed for seven years exclusively on the basis of what he posted online. “We are starting to notice the beginnings of disaffection with Facebook -- they have understood that’s how we get incriminating evidence,” said Chadrys. “They are resorting more and more to Skype or WhatsApp, software that is much harder to intercept. “We realise that the people we are interested in are increasingly specialised in computing. They master encryption software and methods to better erase data.” Arthur Macdonald A FAREWELL TO ALL THAT B ritain, as it faces up to a general election in less than 100 days, appears to be a bit obsessed by historic wars. I find this a bit surprising given our lack of interest in recent conflicts we have been involved in. This is probably down to the fact that there are a lot of people currently in politics who are not too happy about being called to account about invading Afghanistan and bombing Iraq. But we will get back to that later. On the historic front apparently we are about to celebrate a victory of 200 years ago at the battle of Waterloo. This saw the ultimate defeat of Napoleon and if you are British you tend to know it was won by a guy called Wellington. Outside of the UK he is only famous for wearing rubber boots which are very handy for keeping out the damp in this part of the world. His other claim to fame is that he served two terms as a British prime minister, in spite of being Irish. But he is hardly an internationally renowned figure like Napoleon so I can’t for the life of me understand why we are getting excited about Waterloo. In fact only about one third of the troops who fought the French were British. But apparently it is a cornerstone of our history which we must celebrate in June in spite of the fact that very few people know where Waterloo is. Most people associate it more with a remarkably unforgettable hit song by a bad Scandinavian band who won the Eurovision Song contest back in the year dot. On another historic front we have just celebrated the 50th anniversary of the death Winston Churchill. Now Winston, like Wellington, was twice a British prime minister and was largely admired for his leadership of the country during World War Two. But no sooner had the dust settled after that conflict than he was dispatched to the opposition in the largest Labour Party landslide until Tony Blair. Actually, as a politician he was a bit of a disaster. As Chancellor he took Britain back onto the Gold Standard in the 1920s which plunged us into our longest recession until now and in his second term in charge he kept trying to start wars all over the globe to keep the British Empire intact. Other than that he spent most of his youth fighting conflicts across territories in the British Empire and further afield. He spent most of his adult life, whether in government or opposition, drunk. When he died 50 years ago he got the largest state funeral of anyone anywhere in the world. That should have been enough for anyone, but for whatever reason we are now celebrating his death again. Now at a time when we are still partners in the European Union, albeit outside the eurozone, bringing up military victories against France and Germany in the run up to an election strikes me as somewhat divisive. After all only the UK Independence party is opposed to being friends with Europe. The government is only offering a referendum on the issue to shut up recalcitrant xenophobic back benchers while all the other political parties contesting the election are strongly pro - Europe. Which brings me back from our celebration of old rather than recent history and our reasons for our invasion of Iraq. The government and opposition are probably a bit embarrassed about why we went to war with Iraq. There are two reasons for this. The first is that we went to war on a lie. The second is that practically no one would argue the war has made the world or the Middle East a safer place. So neither the Tories or Labour is particularly upset that six years after they agreed to hold an inquiry into why we went to war, the report is still not completed and will not be published this side of the election. That rather appeals to both main parties, as they would happily see this part of our history swept under the carpet. In fact the other day when leading politicians were appearing at Churchill photo opportunities, only 40 MPs turned up to debate the non-publication of the Chilcot Iraq Inquiry. Sadly for some, one of them was the Respect MP George Galloway who opposed the war from day one and was even kicked out of the Labour Party for his stance. It was quite a Churchillian performance which suggests that over the next three months in the run up to the election Iraq and the Middle East will very clearly still be on the agenda. Morsi trial verdict for espionage on May 16 Cairo An Egyptian court set May 16 for a verdict in the espionage trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, who could be sentenced to death if convicted, an official said Saturday. In this case, he and 35 others are charged with being part of a vast conspiracy to destabilise Egypt. ‘Hamas: an armed wing terror group’ Cairo n Egyptian court on Saturday banned the armed wing of Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, declaring it a “terrorist” group. Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, denounced the ruling against the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades as “a dangerous political decision that serves the interests of the occupier,” referring to Israel. Since Egypt’s military ousted A Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, the authorities have accused Hamas of aiding jihadists who have waged a string of deadly attacks on security forces in the Sinai Peninsula. Saturday’s court verdict followed a complaint from a lawyer accusing the Hamas armed wing of direct involvement in “terrorist operations” in the Sinai, a court official said. Curbing Terrorism Police clip wings of extremists en route to Syria Istanbul Fulya Ozerkan E Plainclothes Turkish police officers detain passengers after a plane landed at the international airport in Istanbul on Saturday. (AFP) verything seems normal as the passengers stream out of a routine flight from a Middle Eastern country after landing at a major Turkish international airport. But as they cross the air bridge from the plane into the airport, two plainclothes Turkish police, on the lookout for jihadists on their way to Syria, scrutinise their appearance and behaviour. They check the passengers’ passports and detain two men who arouse suspicions after saying they are travelling on to the city of Adana, in southern Turkey. The country has long been under pressure to do more to thwart the transit of jihadists across its territory to war-torn Syria. Thousands are believed to have taken commercial flights to Turkish airports before heading overland to Syria to fight alongside Islamic State (IS) militants. But Ankara insists it is now doing all it can to tighten border security and said Western states should do more to prevent the jihadists from leaving for Turkey in the first place. The teams have detected some 1,500 suspects and around one third of them were sent back to their countries of origin, said a Turkish security official. “The suspect is spotted at the air bridge and then taken to the passenger documents check desk and later to the risk analysis centre for a further interview with the police,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Start off by fastening a loop at the bottom of the pipe cleaner so you have an end to catch the beads as you bead. Now the fun part: Bead the pipe cleaners to make their bracelets! This activity also works on fine motor skills too: fitting the beads and the pasta on the pipe cleaners. As you got about 3/4 of the way up the pipe cleaner, take the end of the pipe cleaner through the loop to latch them together and wove the excess pip cleaner through the last bead. The ducklings were very happy following their mother and quack-quacking along the way. All of a sudden the mother duck saw a fox at a distance. She was frightened and shouted, “Children, hurry to the lake. There’s a fox!” The ducklings hurried towards the lake. The mother duck wondered what to do. She began to walk back and forth dragging one wing on the ground. When the fox saw her he became happy. He said to himself, “It seems that she’s hurt and can’t fly! I can easily catch and eat her!” Then he ran towards her. The mother duck ran, leading the fox away from the lake. The fox followed her. Now he wouldn’t be able to harm her ducklings. The mother duck looked towards her ducklings and saw that they had reached the lake. She was relieved, so she stopped and took a deep breath. The fox thought she was tired and he came closer, but the mother duck quickly spread her wings and rose up in the air. She landed in the middle of the lake and her ducklings swam to her. The fox stared in disbelief at the mother duck and her ducklings. He could not reach them because they were in the middle of the lake. Yesterday’s solution 22 Sunday, February 1, 2015 THE OTHER HALF OF N A R ENDRA MOD I P resident Barack Obama’s recent trip to India raised questions about the wife of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—a woman whose life is shrouded in mystery. While the U.S. president appeared at the extravagant Republic Day parade with First Lady Michelle Obama, the Indian first lady, if she can even be called that, was absent, to no-one’s surprise. Mr. Modi lives as a single man though, technically, he isn’t. While filing his election nomination papers this past April, he admitted publicly for the first time that he was married. Subsequently, it came to light that he and his wife, Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, had married when she was 17 and Modi 18. Three years into the marriage, he distanced himself from his wife, threw himself into his work as a campaigner for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, and then joined politics. Jashodaben became a schoolteacher and, like him, never remarried. Now retired and in her sixties, Jashodaben lives with her brother and subsists on a pension of 14,000 rupees ($232) a month. She has said the last time she spoke to the prime minister was in 1987. Neither has sought a divorce. In many ways, Jashodaben embodies the so-called “Sati-Savitri” ideal. In some traditional Indian circles, this is the highest praise a woman can receive. The term joins together two symbols Three years into the marriage, he (Modi) distanced himself from his wife, threw himself into his work as a campaigner for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, and then joined politics. Goddess Sati, the wife of the Hindu god Shiva, is celebrated for immolating herself after her husband was slighted by her father. Equally, Savitri, a character from Hindu epic the Mahabharata, is praised for dissuading the god of death, Yama, from taking her sister-in-law has to make their beds. This is a bit annoying,” Jashodaben had said. In many ways, Jashodaben’s story is that of many husband’s life by outwitting him. Speaking of Jashodaben, Narendra Modi’s sister told the Times of India that: “Despite being abandoned, Jashoda never spoke ill of him. That is a true Indian woman for you.” Not only has she never spoken ill of him, she is said to have fasted and prayed for him to become prime minister. Her life seems to exemplify the self-effacement and sacrifice symbolized by Sati and Savitri. However, this “true Indian woman” is Indian women. Even when she achieves financial independence, she is still bound by mental shackles to a social system that doesn’t care for her, that’s stacked against her. Perhaps it’s time for her to realize this and carve out a life accordingly. showing some signs of being fed up with the trappings of her odd marriage. Making use of India’s “Right to Information” act, she recently sought information about the armed bodyguards who have been deployed by the government to protect her. A LETTER DID IT ALL S pain’s Catholic church, which has long been accused of silencing cases of priests sexually abusing children, is starting to take a hard line against offenders, spurred by Pope Francis. A judge in the southern city of Granada on Tuesday charged 10 priests and two Catholic lay workers with sexually abusing altar boys in their care, or being complicit in such acts, from 2004 to 2007. It is the biggest and most serious paedophilia case involving members of the Catholic Church known so far in Spain. The case was brought to light by a former altar boy, now 25 and a member of the Catholic institution Opus Dei, who wrote to the pontiff to say he had been molested. Pope Francis called the unidentified man to offer the Church’s apology and in November the pontiff said he had ordered a church investigation into the case, saying it had caused him “great pain”. The young man who wrote to the pope “never imagined the issue would take on the significance that it did,” said his lawyer, Jorge Aguilera Gonzalez. “If it wasn’t for the pope’s intervention, it would still have been an important issue, but just one of many.” Pope Francis has taken a tough stance on clerical child abuse since taking over in 2013 from Benedict XVI, calling it “the shame of the Church”. The Catholic Church had huge influence in Spain during Francisco Franco’s 1939-75 dictatorship and for decades victims kept quiet about abuse “due to social pressure, the power of the Church”, said Jose Manuel Vidal, head of religious news website Religion Digital. That explains why, unlike in Germany, Ireland, Mexico or the United States, until now no major cases of paedophilia involving priests have come to light in Spain even though abuse took place. Nine percent of all sexual abuse suffered by boys between 1950 and 1970 was carried out by priests, according to a 1994 study by University of Salamanca psychology of sexuality professor Felix Lopez for the Ministry of Social Affairs. The abuse often took place in boarding schools, as depicted in Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s 2004 film “Bad Education.” -AFP 23 Sunday, February 1, 2015 Italy’s lawmakers elect Sergio Mattarella as prez Rome ergio Mattarella, a Constitutional Court justice widely considered to be above the political fray, was elected Saturday as Italy’s president in the third day of balloting by lawmakers. A Mutant Warfare Miami British company’s plan to unleash hordes of genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida to reduce the threat of dengue fever and other diseases has sparked an outcry from A of state was clinched when he amassed 505 votes — a simple majority. The 73-year-old former minister with center-left political roots went on to garner a total of 665 votes from the 1,009 eligible electors. Known as a man of few words, Mattarella cemented that reputation with his first remarks to the nation. “My thoughts go, above all, and before everything, to the difficulties and hopes of our fellow citizens. That’s enough,” he said in brief comments at his court office just down the street from the presidential palace. Italy is mired in recession and unemployment has hovered about 13 per cent nationally. Young Italians are increasingly seeking work abroad. Then he applied a Europeanwide vision to his largely ceremonial post when he made a surprise, private visit to the Ardeatine Caves, a monument to Rome’s victims of its World War II Nazi occupiers, on the city’s outskirts. After pausing in reflection there, Mattarella hailed the wartime alliance “between nations and peoples that knew how to defeat Nazi, racial, antiSemitic and totalitarian hate” and called for more of the same solidarity now. “The same unity in Europe and in the world will know how to defeat those who want to drag us into a new season of terror,” the presidential palace quoted him as saying. UKRAINE PEACE TALKS COLLAPSE Post the killing of 15 soldiers Minsk eace talks aimed at halting rising bloodshed in eastern Ukraine ended in failure Saturday, with Kiev’s envoy saying pro-Russian separatists wrecked a deal by refusing to discuss an immediate ceasefire. The delayed talks in Minsk were “thwarted” after top rebel leaders stayed away and their negotiators also refused to discuss withdrawing heavy weapons, former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma said. Kuchma also accused the insurgents’ representatives of putting forward “ultimatums” at the four-hour talks in the Belarussian capital without giving any more details. The negotiator for the rebel Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, however, P Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk (R) arrives to take part in peace talks in Minsk January 31 blamed Kiev for causing the collapse of the talks and said insurgent leaders would only agree a deal if Kiev’s forces halt fire first. Pushilin said the rebels also insisted the demarcation line include territory taken since the previous line was agreed in September, said by analysts to be around 500 square kilometres (200 square miles). Mediators from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe had hoped to thrash out a “binding” truce to revive a shattered peace plan despite Kiev suffering one of its bloodiest days yet in the nine-month conflict with 15 Ukrainian troops killed. The OSCE as well as Russian officials attended the talks in Minsk after a nominal September ceasefire collapsed under the latest wave of violence. The insurgents last week pulled out of peace talks and announced the start of an offensive designed to expand their control over a much broader swathe of the industrial southeast. Automated signals to monitor flights Montreal ll commercial flights worldwide could soon send out an automated signal every minute in times of distress to help rescuers find downed aircraft more easily. The new measures are in response to last year’s disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in what remains one of history’s great aviation mysteries. The new tracking rules, prepared by an industry working group, would be phased in by the end of this year, said the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency. Currently, radar can track a plane, however coverage fades when aircraft are out at sea or the plane is flying below a certain altitude. Under the new rules, airlines will be required to track their aircraft using a system that gives their location at 15-minute intervals. A Obama to appear in public with Dalai Lama Washington S President Barack Obama will appear in public at an event attended by the Dalai Lama next week in Washington, the White House said on Friday, in a move sure to anger Beijing. “The president will deliver remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast,” said National Security Council U Barack Obama with Dalai Lama. The 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule and has lived in exile in India ever since. China accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking to split Tibet from the rest of China and of fomenting unrest in the region, calling him “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Previous meetings between Obama and the Nobel prize winner have been met with formal Chinese diplomatic protests that have soured relations between the world’s two largest economies. GMO mosquito plan sparks debate in Florida fearful residents. As of Friday, more than 145,000 people had signed a petition at change.org urging regulators to “say no” to allowing the tourist-friendly fishing and diving haven to become “a testing ground for these mutant bugs.” The company, Oxitec, said it wants to try the technique there in order to reduce the non-native Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in south Florida and beyond. The process involves inserting a gene into labgrown, male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The added DNA makes it impossible for their offspring to survive. Since the males do not bite, the lab-grown males would be released to mate with wild females. These releases would take place a few times per week. “Both the released mosquitoes and their offspring will die -- they do not stay in the environment,” Oxitec said. 24 Sunday, February 1, 2015 1979 murder trial gets under way New York mentally deranged person accused of killing a 6-year-old boy in one of America’s most famous missing child cases went on trial Friday, 36 years after the crime. Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) said it had put a hold on the executions while it secured new lethal injection drugs. T Earlier this month, the department revised its drug protocol following the bungled January 2014 execution of Dennis McGuire, who appeared to be gasping for air during the process that lasted 26 minutes, instead of the expected 10 minutes. The drug cocktail used to kill McGuire included the sedative midazolam, which is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and has been used in several bungled executions in the United States. In a statement, the DRC “announced INDIA MAKES A GIANT LEAP revised execution dates for seven inmates... to continue necessary preparations for the adoption and implementation of the new execution protocol.” “The new dates are also designed to provide DRC adequate time to secure a supply of the new execution drugs.” Six of the seven executions were due to take place in 2015, but as a result of the delay, Ohio will not carry out any executions this year. Tests long-range missile from mobile launcher New Delhi ndia on Saturday succeeded for the first time in using a mobile launcher to test-fire a long-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead deep inside rival China. Although Saturday’s launch was the third test of the Agni V missile, it was the first time the weapon had been fired from a so-called canister mounted on a truck rather than from a concrete launchpad used in previous trials. The new delivery mechanism gives the armed forces increased operational flexibility. “Successful test-firing of Agni V from a canister makes the missile a prized asset for our forces,” Prime Minister Narendra I Modi said on Twitter after the test on an island off the eastern state of Orissa. The Agni V - developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation - was first tested in April 2012. Analysts say the Agni V has the range to strike any target on the Chinese mainland, including military installations in the far northeast. India sees the rocket, which has a range of 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles), as a key boost to its regional power aspirations and one that narrows -- albeit slightly -- the huge gap with China’s missile systems. While the shorter-range Agni I and II were mainly developed with traditional rival Pakistan in mind, analysts say later versions with a longer range reflect the shift in India’s focus towards China. This recipe was created by Angela Hartnett specifically for the Great British Budget Banquet Dinner and shows you how to get more value from a roast chicken by using the carcass to make stock for a fragrant rice. INGREDIENTS: 1 small whole chicken 2 tbsp freshly grated ginger 1 tbsp ground cumin 30ml/2 tbsp vegetable oil ½ tbsp dried thyme (if using fresh allow for 1 tbsp thyme leaves) Salt and black pepper 1 courgette, thickly sliced on the diagonal 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced into wedges 200g/7oz of long grain rice 1 large cinnamon stick 1 bay leaf 3 cardamom pods 125g/4½oz green raisins 1 lemon, zest and juice 1 lime, zest and juice To serve PREPARATION Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Joint the chicken removing the breasts, legs and wings. Place the remaining carcass in a large saucepan and cover with water to make a stock. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. In a small bowl, mix together the grated ginger and cumin with the oil, thyme and a pinch of salt and pepper to make a paste. Place the chicken pieces into a large roasting tray and cover evenly with the paste. Place the courgette and peppers around the chicken pieces, then roast for 30-40 minutes on the top shelf of the oven, or until the chicken is cooked and goldenbrown. Strain the chicken stock and discard the carcass, season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover the rice with 500ml/18fl oz stock (from the chicken carcass) and add the cinnamon stick, bay leaf and cardamom. Cook with the lid on over a high heat for 15 minutes. Towards the last five minutes of cooking time add the raisins. Check that the rice is cooked, strain off any excess liquid and remove the bay leaf and spices. Add the zest and juice of the lemon and lime. Mix through and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve the roasted chicken pieces and roasted vegetables on a bed of the spiced rice. Garnish with a sprinkling of chopped toasted nuts and sliced spring onions. Finish with a little chopped coriander if desired.
