Hopefully all that wanted to go on our first Manager’s Motorcycle Ride to Tortilla Flats made it. Any type of scoot is welcome so long as it can maintain a 75 mph pace for when we are on the freeways. If the beautiful weather hangs on for February, I’ll announce another ride. Please feel free to suggest other destinations. I am excited to announce that we have ordered our first NEW Park Model in years!! It will be set on site 11-207 if you would like to see….or better yet…..BUY it. We will bring in more as demand dictates. We will also be selling some of our older park model rental inventory after the season is over, so if you are interested in picking up a (very) used park model for not a lot of money, see Steve or Connie in the Sales Office. As we head into February, it’s time for our RV guests to start thinking about next season, which means it’s getting close to Early Bird booking time. Watch for information announcing the Early Bird dates. I would love to see all RVers re-book for next season AND bring an RV friend. It would be wonderful to see Voyager FULL next season. Don’t forget about our referral bonus….an easy $50 for you with each new Voyager RV referral you make resulting in a stay of 30 days or longer. In 2014, 35 of you received the bonus. That more than doubled our previous best year….so THANK YOU!!! Now the rules part of my novel….this month it’s regarding pets. Please, please, please when you walk your dogs, cats, javelinas, or coyotes, keep them on a leash no longer than 6 feet, don’t let them wander into other residents’ front yards to do their business….and please make sure you are picking up after them. It is not fair to residents to find your pet’s residue in their front yards and then have to clean it up. Be a courteous pet owner and a considerate neighbor. That’s about all I have for this month – enjoy the beautiful weather that we have been blessed with thus far!!!! LET’S DO IT RIGHT ! BY ROSE BECK Official figures show that up to 20% of the items collected for recycling were incinerated or dumped in landfills last year. Overall, we at Voyager do a fairly good job of not contaminating our recycles. It is not just how much recycling we do that’s important, it’s also HOW WE DO IT. SO LET’S DO IT RIGHT! There is only ONE bin for mixed recyclables. NEVER place bags of garbage in a recycle bin. Use the trash bins. All recycled items, including paper, must be free of food and grease. If you choose NOT to wash cans, glass or plastic, place them in the trash. All items must be CLEAN!. All boxes MUST be broken down or flattened. If you are not able to do this, please ASK FOR HELP. There is a sign at the recycle bin for items that can be recycled. If an item is not on the list, please put it in the trash. The green elves thank you for your efforts. Individuals with all types of hearing loss and spouses/ families/friends are welcome. 18 February 2015 F AITH M ATTERS THE ORIGINAL VALENTINE February is noted for cold weather, President's Day sales, and, of course, Valentine’s Day. It is actually named after a saint who was originally a bishop in the early church. Noted for his compassion and care for the poor, his most famous gift was three small bags of coins that he gave to three poor girls so they could have a dowry. He left his name in each bag. It was simply signed “Your Valentine." In our modern culture, sometimes the original message of Valentine's Day can get lost. The emphasis is on the romance. Flowers, cards, and romantic dinners seem to be the order of the day. Mind you, I am not opposed to any of those things. especially when the candy is dark chocolate. I just want to emphasize the faith and compassion that is a vital part of this day. You are, I hope, aware of "Neighbor to Neighbor." This is a program that does just what the name implies. When someone needs a ride to the doctor, or a prescription picked up, or an act of compassion, neighbors here at Voyager stand ready to help. New this season is Community Cares, a program designed to keep track of people who are living alone and need someone to check on them. People who need the assistance have someone stop by to see if they have posted a sign in their window. The sign is rotated to show the correct date. See page 20 for more details. We are also starting a program that is designed to help people who have experienced grief in their lives to share their stories in a safe place. When you add all the charitable gifts and acts of volunteerism that are such a part of Voyager life, you can see, as I do, that the compassion of Saint Valentine is alive and well here. NIMBLE FINGERS Our annual drive for new underwear and socks for children in Foster Care continues through February. These children need your help. Most have only the clothes on their back when taken into Foster Care; many have never had new clothes, only hand me downs. When you are out shopping, remember the children and pick up a new package of underwear or socks. Or donate dollars, and we will shop for you. Bring donations to any Monday or Friday meeting between 1:00 and 3:30 pm in the Palo Verde Room. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Other ways you can help include sewing tote bags and pajamas for Shiners' hospital patients; knitting and crocheting hats and scarves for homeless teens, afghans for nursing homes and the VA; making cancer hats for hospital cancer units and walker bags for rehab centers; or donating yarn, fabric, or dollars to help purchase supplies. Drop by a meeting to get involved. SILVERSHOP NEWS The Silvershop’s Holiday Party featured a rousing green chili stew with special entertainment by Jim Wilhelm. We are currently planning a special spring pizza party. Ray Morris is our most recent new supervisor. About one third of our members and supervisors are women with the percentage increasing every year. During the summer we were able to purchase several new pieces of equipment. Our new hydraulic press pancake dies are fancy hole punches where the hole is in the shape of a flower, triangle, or leaf. We use them to punch out the shapes in silver or copper to make earrings or bracelets. Our 22 ton hydraulic press is powerful enough to get the job done. We also bought texture dies that transfer a texture to silver or copper. Again we use the press or a mill. A mill is a set of rollers that can squish thick silver sheets into thin ones. And we now have tapered cones large enough to make perfect bangles. Bracelets that are continuous round circles are called bangles; when they have a gap that is a bracelet. I have been to quite a few silver shops at different parks like Voyager but none of them even come close to the capabilities that we have in our shop. Come in to the shop and we will give you a quick demonstration of what a pancake die can do without butter and syrup. Al Martens, Silvershop Coordinator QUILTERS 2 Quilters 2 welcomes all skill levels from beginners to advanced, offering classes, demos and mentoring.
