Heart to Heart
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ
Jesus;
Whose birthday did you just
celebrate? Jesus Christ’s birthday.
Where did He come from? Jesus
said, “I am the Bread of Heaven
whom the Father gives to you …I
am the Living Bread that came
down out of Heaven…”
Why did He come? From Hebrews
2:14-18 it says; Jesus came to
“render powerless the devil who
has the power of death…and might
deliver those who through fear of
death were subject to slavery all
their lives…and come to the aid of
those who are tempted.”
Jesus underwent a human birth, so
that we who believe can have a
heavenly birth.
Jesus took His place in a manger,
so that we could take our place in
heaven in a mansion prepared for
us.
Jesus became a member of the
human family, so that we could
become members of God’s family.
Jesus became poor, so that we
might become rich.
Jesus was hunted by Herod, so that
we might be delivered from the
grasp of Satan.
As you begin your new year,
continue to remember Who has
come to this earth, so that you
might have a peaceful, hopeful, and
joyful life.
See you in church worship this new
year and out in the mission field.

Loads of Love will meet on Monday, January 5 at 10:00 to prepare meals and deliver them to our
shut-ins. We will also be working on hand-made cards for each household that receives meals and
about 50 other folks within our church. We would love to have you come join us … the first
Monday of any month you are available to help! This is a very special ministry that blesses many
people … the recipients and especially those who prepare and deliver the meals and cards.
A special THANK YOU to Brenda Price and Nancy Cope for taking over this mission while I am
unable to handle it.
For more information, contact Gloria English at [email protected] or 919/772-4285.

The December meeting of the FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE was very special, as always. Pastor Wayne
read the Christmas story from Luke (King James version, of course!) and we were entertained by
the preschool children’s rehearsal of their Christmas program. These children are so precious and
provide such blessings for us all!
We will resume our study of the book BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE in January; this is an
outstanding book and we are enjoying probing these women in scripture and how their experiences
relate to us and our lives today.
All women of the church are automatically members of UMW; so if you are free on the third
Wednesday of the month at 10:00, come give us a try!!
For more information, contact Gloria English at [email protected] or 919/772-4285.

The United Methodist Men continue to meet each Thursday morning at 6:00 a.m. for a Bible
Study and breakfast. All men are welcome.
On the third Thursday evening of each month we meet at 6:00 p.m. for fellowship and dinner.
TEACHERS CORNER-By Paul Sims
Matthew Chapter One: This is how the birth of Jesus
Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be
married to Joseph, but before they came together, she
was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and
did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in
mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered
this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream
and said, "Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary home
as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from
the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are
to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his
people from their sins." When Joseph woke up, he did
what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and
took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with
her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the
name Jesus.
Does this chapter seem a bit shorter than you
remember? It should – a lot of what you normally read
has been left out. Why? Because all that other stuff
refers to the Old Testament. Missing is that long
genealogy that shows that Jesus was descended in
direct, unbroken line from Abraham and David; that he
was indeed the fulfillment of God’s promise to send his
people a messiah. Also missing is the Old Testament
prophecy that ‘the virgin would conceive and bear a
son.’
By now, you should be feeling that not only is the
chapter shorter, it’s as bland as sand. Without the Old
Testament’s prophecy of the coming of the Messiah and
the statement of his right to the throne of David, this
sounds more like a fairy tale that the birth of the King of
Kings! The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory are all
missing.
Many seem of the opinion that the Old Testament is
boring, repetitious, long-winded, and just plain obscure.
Well, to a lot of us, so was math, science, and English
literature. No one doubts the value of these however,
and we all wish we had paid more attention because
some of that stuff turns out to be really useful. It’s the
same with the OT. Not studying the OT is like coming
into the movie two-thirds of the way through. We get to
see the action scenes and the triumph of the good guys,
but we have no idea what they were fighting for or why.
Why was there an emphasis on the carpenter being
Jewish? What do the Jews have to do with it, anyway?
And who is this God character? Was he really the
carpenter’s father, or just a ‘spiritual adviser’?
You can read and enjoy and find strength and help in the
New Testament, but if you really want to know God and
Jesus, you need to read and study the Old Testament as
well. It’s where the greatest love story of all time began.
It’s the setting for the whole movie!
A Winter's Tale - Methodist Home for Children
2015 Gala
The Methodist Home for Children will be hosting their
annual fund raising gala on January 31, 2015. This
event is not only one of the largest charity events in the
Triangle each year, but also the single largest fund
raiser for this ministry. The MHFC supports thousands
of children through foster care, adoption services, and
family intervention services each year. If you would like
to attend the gala or be a sponsor for the event, please
visit www.mhfc.org for the event specifics or contact
Becky McNeill for more information.
For all members of Administrative Council, we will
be having a Saturday morning meeting on January
17th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. This meeting will take
place at the United Methodist Conference Building,
located at 700 Waterfield Ridge Place in Garner.
This meeting will be about dreaming, planning and
visioning for the future here at Saint Andrews
UMC.
What is your passion for your area of
responsibility?
What is God calling you to do to reach the
community for Christ.
Start praying and start talking with God about how
we can become the church he wants us to be.

ARTISTIC OUTREACH- Thanks to everyone who supported our Empty Bowl Project
this year, especially the following: Missions, our Pathfinders' class, Alicia Beard, Pat
Sheffield, and Doug Harwood. We were able to collect enough food to fill up 22 large
boxes for Garner Area Ministries, thanks to your help.
Please join us on Sunday, January 11th at our 11:00 a.m. worship service when we
recognize all of our students who participated in this outreach.
Next up...CHAIRS OF HOPE! Financial donations are being taken now to assist with
supplies for our students to begin painting chairs for our annual fundraiser for the Relay
For Life of Garner and The American Cancer Society.
A huge thank you for all of your continued support in helping our students use their
gifts and talents to give back to others! God Bless, and Merry CHRISTmas! -Jim Hunt

HOPE MINISTRIES
Saint Andrews has volunteered to help with HOPE Ministries in 2015. We will be doing
the 5th Saturdays during the year; there are only 4 of them (January 31, May 30, August
29, and October 31). We will be partnering with First Presbyterian Church. Our duties
each 5th Saturday will be to provide 2 side dishes to each serve 30-35 people and we
will also need folks from Saint Andrews to be at HOPE to serve, fellowship with the
guests, clean up, wash towels, etc. Please put these dates on your calendar if you
would be interested in assisting with this fulfilling ministry. As the dates approach,
please let Carolyn Hare or I know you will be able to help out. When we helped back in
September, it was good to see the HOPE folks again. This is a great ministry in which
to be involved – it’s right here in our community and is so easy to do! Even for those
who don’t cook, the only skills that are needed are to serve food, talk to the guests, and
pitch in with cleaning. How simple is that!

Make A Joyful Noise Unto the Lord!
What a joyful noise our preschoolers made when they sang for the morning UMW! No shyness that
day! Thank you, UMW ladies for the gifts for the children. Then they gave their gift of song to their
parents, grandparents, and some church members during our Christmas Program, “A Gift of Music”. It
was like listening to a choir of little angels. Pastor Wayne greeted our families and opened our program
with a prayer. The children and their families went to the Fellowship Hall after the program so the
children could give the gifts they lovingly made to their parents. Most also had a visit with Santa, who
told them ‘Jesus loves you” and gave them a “Jingle with Joy for Jesus” teddy bear. Everyone enjoyed
a time of fellowship and refreshments.
‘Thank you’ to Adam Beard for manning the sound booth and making a recording of the program.
A special ‘thank you’ to Ann Messler (whose great-grandson, Shane, is in the PreK class) for coming to
his class to make bows with the children for them to take home. They were beautiful and the children
enjoyed choosing which ribbon they wanted. We love having volunteers share talents with our children.
That time is special for the children.
The Preschool staff hopes that you will spend quality time with your children always and have a Blessed
New Year!
Mrs. Pat Sheffield, Director
If this is to be a Happy New Year, a year of usefulness, a year in which we shall live to make this earth better, it is because
God will direct our pathway. Matthew Simpson
A new year is before you, what will you do with it? Just in the last 4 weeks, over 200 children will have a much better
Christmas because of your generosity. During 2014 there were families that could sit down to a meal because of your gifts
of love. Cancer research received support because you came and walked (and ate). There were so many ways that you
were the hands and feet of Christ. The challenge ahead to is open your heart and listen for what God is asking you to do in
2015. Sometimes the voice is very quiet and other times there can be no doubt what you are being asked to do. Take time
in this, the first month of the year, and ask God what can you do to further his kingdom, help his people and be his hands
and feet throughout the next 12 months.
From all the people you helped - and from those of us who benefited from your support to reach out to others, a very
heartfelt thank you and wishes for a blessed new year.
What is a Stephen Minister? Stephen Ministers are laypeople—Christian men and women—
trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief,
divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment.
Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s
love and care to people during a time of need.
Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2,
NRSV). Might God Be Calling You? If you sense that God might be calling you to serve as a
Stephen Minister, the first step is to find out more about getting involved. If you are interested in
being a part of this ministry, talk with one of your Stephen Leaders.
The Stephen Ministers invite you to come to an informational session on January 29th at
7:00 P.M. here in the Fellowship Hall.

Building Committee Update
Thanks to everyone who completed their stewardship pledge for 2015. Pledge
funds are being received weekly. Some who have completed their pledge are
continuing to contribute to the Building Fund. The Administrative Council
agreed to include a line item in the budget for the building mortgage payment if
the pledges increased by 15%. As of December 21, the pledges received did
not increase by 15%. We have our site ready, plans are drawn, there is
excitement among members, and we have a quote to build the building.
However, we cannot proceed until our financing is in place. Those who have
not completed their pledge are encouraged to do so. As of December 14, the
balance in the Building Fund was $1,042,186, and includes $196,085 from fund
raisers, memorials and other non pledged funds. Minutes of the Building
Committee meetings are on file in the church office and are available for review
by church members. Thank you for your support, patience, understanding and
encouragement in working through the Building Plan Process. Please share
your thoughts and concerns about the work of the Building Committee with
Vince Revels, Chair of the Building Committee.
A new year is upon us, and I am excited about what we have planned for children's ministry. 2015 is
going to be the time where our children continue to learn about missions and how they can share
God's love with others.
Tracey Martin is our new nursery coordinator for our 11 a.m. service. Please prayerfully consider
how you can spend time with those precious, little ones during worship. Jesus has a special place in
his heart for children, and I know that we at SAUMC do as well.
Know that I am here to support you and your family in any way that I can. Due to my schedule, I
don't hold regular office hours. However, if you need to reach me feel free to call me on my cell,
(919) 744-7503, and we can talk via phone or plan a time to meet.
I pray that God continues to guide our church as we shepherd children to know more about Him and
make Him known!
Yours in Service,
Alicia
The Tuesday Morning Bible Study will begin its new study on January 6, 2015 at 10 am. We have 20 weeks
in which to meet - so I have picked two Max Lucado books. The first one is Grace: More Than We Deserve,
Greater Than We Imagine. Here is a summary of the book: "We talk as though we know
what grace means. Lucado reminds readers that there’s more to grace than we’ve ever imagined. Lucado
challenges readers to not only receive grace but also to be changed by grace. Shaped by grace.
Strengthened by grace. Emboldened by grace. Softened by grace. Snatched by the nape of their neck and
shaken to their senses by grace."
The second book is ~ Before Amen-The Power of a Simple Prayer. "We all pray . . . some. We aren’t the first
to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only
tutorial they ever requested. And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of
prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn’t we use the same?
In Before Amen, Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for
doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized
prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is
simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child."
Counselor’s blahba …
"A TEENAGER'S PRAYER"
Each day brings new beginnings
Decisions I must make
I am the only one to choose
The road that I will take
I can choose to take the road of life
That leads to great success
Or travel down the darkened road
That leads to great distress
Please open up my eyes, dear Lord
That I might clearly see
Help me stand for what is right
Bring out the best in me
Help, Lord, to just say "no"
When temptation comes my way
That I might keep my body clean
And fit for life each day
When my teenage years are over
I know that I will see
That life is lived its very best
With you walking next to me.
