From the Desk of Central Road Principal
Jenny Garcia-Macko
I hope you had a wonderful break! It’s been fun listening to your children’s amazing stories of holiday
travel and family fun. I want to take a moment to
thank you for your gift of time and donations last
month; your generosity made special celebrations
possible for several families.
District 15 has developed an additional option called Delayed
Start to consider on a day with inclement weather. We would not
have to cancel school for the day so the school year will not have
to be extended. A Delayed Start is a day in which students began
school two hours later than a normal school day due to inclement
weather. It is a regular workday for staff and administration. The
decision to implement this option will be made no later than 5
a.m. on the day of a Delayed Start. Parents/guardians will be notified through voice mail, e-mail, and announcements that will be
posted on the District 15 website and Chicago-area media outlets.
We were recently notified that District 15 will be administering the PARCC paper-based test to students in grades 3-8 for
Spring 2015. The decision was made after extensive field-testing
of the computer-based PARCC assessment. The Performance
Based Assessment (PBA) is scheduled for March 9-20; the dates
for the End of Year (EOY) Assessment in May have yet to be finalized by the state. Even with these new developments, our
PTA Publication | Illinois PTA District 37 | Volume 18 | Issue #5 | February, 2015
focus continues to be on providing excellent instruction and the
best learning opportunities for Central Road students.
After break, students attended a short PBIS (Positive Behavior
Implementation and Support) Station Rotations to briefly review
expectations for being respectful, responsible and safe in all areas
of Central Road. Please review these strategies at home and encourage students to use them, and praise them for being good role
models. Visitors will often stop me to compliment our students
for being so polite and respectful. Thank you, parents, for being
such positive role models!
Lastly, we have several new staff members at Central Road.
Please help us welcome Mrs. Sue Marvin, Reading Assistant;
Mrs. Jackie Laboda, Reading Assistant; Ms. Nadia Alvarez, Occupational Therapist; and Ms. Cindy Saunders who is a long-term
substitute teacher for Mrs. Jamie Rocha. We are delighted to have
them join our Central Road staff!
As we move into the cold winter months, please be sure to
send your child to school with winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves
and boots. We will be going outside for at least 20 minutes during
the lunch period unless the temperature is below zero. Thank you
for your ongoing support. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. Best wishes for a
happy and healthy New Year!

No puedo esperar a ver nuestras chicas
Buena
estudiantes a utilizarlas.

Hot Off the PTA Press: Wolves Keeping Warm!
By Shannon Puleo
When it’s cold outside, the Wolves talent takes it to the warmth
of the beach! Central Road’s annual talent show will keep you
warm just thinking about it. The theme this year is Beach Bash
and will be held this weekend, February 6th & 7th (at Conyers
Learning Academy at 7 pm). Can’t wait to see our surfer gals
and guys kick up some sand on the Beach (stage)!
On February 10th & 11th our 6th Grade Wolves will be hitting
the courts for the annual two ball tournament. Good Luck to
our 6th grade boys and girls.
Our ever popular “Rec Nights” are planned in February and
March to keep our bodies warm and energy flowing. Watch for
flyers coming home and try to make it a date with your child
for this fun filled night of activity. Our volunteers always create
fun activities for all to do.
District 15 News
The safety of our students, parents/guardians, and staff in District 15 is our first priority. With that in mind, District 15 and the
Rolling Meadows Police Department worked together to install
video cameras on the stop arms of school buses that serve Central
Road Elementary School, Kimball Hill Elementary School, Willow Bend Elementary School, Plum Grove Junior High School,
and Carl Sandburg Junior High School.
The cameras will record traffic when bus drivers activate the
red stop arms when picking up or dropping off students. If a vehicle passes a school bus with an activated stop arm, the camera
will capture and send a video of the occurrence to the Rolling
Meadows Police Department. The Rolling Meadows Police Department will then review the video and, where appropriate, issue
a citation to the owner of the vehicle. Between the time period of
February 2-February 11, the Rolling Meadows Police Department
will begin by issuing a warning citation without a fine. After this
initial trial period, each citation will include a fine. A first time citation will come with a fine of $150. Each citation beyond the
first will come with a fine of $500.
Consequently, please be aware of the following two traffic
safety laws:
1. When a school bus is traveling on a two-lane roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, the vehicles in
all lanes of traffic must stop. Vehicles should stop at least 20 feet
before reaching the school bus to allow pupils to cross the roadway safely.
2. When a school bus is traveling on a four-lane roadway with at least two lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction
as the school bus must stop.
These safety laws apply on school grounds as well. Please do
not pass a stopped school bus with an activated stop arm while in
a school parking lot because doing so is both unsafe and unlawful. It may also lead to a citation with an accompanying fine. Additionally, unless directed by law enforcement, please do not pass
Valentines day is always a fun day at Central Road! Valentines
parties will be held on Friday, February 13th this year from
1:25-2:25 complete with snacks, games and crafts. Contact
your child’s classroom coordinator today to volunteer at the
party!
Our next PTA meeting is March 3rd at 7 pm. All are welcome.
We have an immediate opening for a Box Tops/Soup Labels
Coordinator due to an upcoming move out of state of the current coordinator. Book Fair co-chair and Talent Show Sound
are still open for THIS School Year. For NEXT school year
(2015-17), the Co-President and Treasurer roles are open plus
other committees (details in next month's newsletter). 2 years is
the normal time to serve. Pls let me or Jen Towsey know if you
would like to shadow on these roles during THIS school year.
a stopped school bus with an activated stop arm while in a school
parking lot even if you are being directed or encouraged to do so
by a bus driver and/or staff member as this will more than likely
result in a citation as well.
Thank you for your help in keeping our students,
parents/guardians, and staff safe in the parking lots of our schools
and on the roadways in our community. If you have any questions
about this new safety initiative, please contact the Rolling Meadows Police Department.

Future Talent Shows .....Need You
The schools Talent Show is a BIG part of Central Road every year.
This is operated by the PTA, and we are in need for parents to start
to shadow us to take it over in the coming years.
At this time we are in need of a parent(s) to shadow OUR
SOUND/MUSIC AREA for future shows. Please be sure to ask how
you can do this during the show. We will be more than happy to
have you take a look as the show is running.
