Although it finally rained, the winter is rapidly
coming to a close, along with winter sports.
The spring musical production of Bye Bye Birdie opens February 27 and runs through March
7 in the Performing Arts Center. It is family
friendly and I highly recommend attending.
Stress Reduction
This semester, a committee will be formed to look at contributors to student
stress. We will be proactively looking at how to reduce student stress focused
on initiatives to address academic demand, foster student wellness and positive connections to school, and provide resources for students to manage
time and balance their course schedules. The committee will develop surveys
for students, parents, and staff to provide input. More information will follow.
Principal Selection Process
The M-A principal position is posted and Hazard and Young Consultants are
working to publicize it and create a deep candidate pool. Parents and staff
have met to provide input on what they want to see in a new principal. Panel
interviews will be held in early April, with a new principal likely announced at
the April 15 Board of Trustees meeting.
Classroom Construction
Five new classrooms are under construction in the F wing. Foundations were
poured February 3 and the rooms will be complete in August 2015 for the
next school year. The scoping and kick-off meeting for the M-A Environmental Impact Report will be presented by TRA consultant Chris Duggan
and Matthew Zito on February 26 in the M-A Library at 6 pm. We will
talk about the campus expansion and related impacts.

Mark your calendars for M-A’s Fashion Show, the PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year! On March 21, MA’s class of 2015 will take the stage for “M-AKING FASHION H15TORY.” Shows will be at 1:00, 4:00
and 7:30 pm. While the Seniors are the stars of the show, the entire M-A community is encouraged to attend. If you know eighth-grade families who are planning their transition to high school, ask them to join
you. Thank you to Karen Fryling, Michelle Culhane, Nancy Kessler and Mary Fischer for co-chairing this
event. We also thank the countless volunteers who are working hard to make this occasion a success.
In February, the PTA sponsored both morning and evening events where our new co-principal, Simone
Kennel, gave a “What’s New at M-A” presentation and answered questions. Thank you to the great group
of parents who attended, asked great questions, and gave insightful comments. Thank you, Simone, for your
thoughtful answers and for updating us on all the wonderful things happening at M-A.
In February, we also hosted all the middle school counselors from our feeder schools. It was a wonderful
opportunity to share information and introduce them to all the programs and activities that M-A has to offer. Our hope is that this will help them best prepare their middle-schoolers to thrive at M-A.
Planning for next year’s PTA board and committee chairs is underway, and M-A’s PTA needs your help. It
takes hundreds of parents to make the PTA run smoothly. If you would like to be part of the PTA volunteer community next year, please contact Kim Steere at [email protected].

March, April, and May will be filled with testing at Menlo-Atherton, and here’s a
summary of what’s coming up:
• Physical fitness testing will be administered to all freshmen during March.
The goal is for all students to pass five out of the six standards which will
be tested.
• The National Assessment of Educational Progress will be administered to
select seniors on Friday, March 6. This is a test given to a sample of seniors throughout the country, the
results of which are used to prepare a report entitled “The Nation’s Report Card” measuring student
achievement nationally. At M-A, 50 seniors have been selected for this test; an informational letter has
been sent to their families.
• The California High School Exit Exam will be administered to all sophomores on Tuesday, March 17 (English) and Wednesday, March 18 (Math). The school schedule will be altered because of testing. Wednesday, March 18 will be a regular day of school, and all periods from 0 through 6 will meet. Our normal
Wednesday block schedule will take place on Friday, March 20, with school beginning at 9:25 am. Please
make a note of this. Federal mandates require us to meet a minimum attendance requirement of 95%;
therefore, we expect all sophomores to be here on these two days. A letter will be sent to families of
sophomores explaining the testing in more detail.
• Smarter Balanced Assessments will be administered to all juniors on Monday, April 13 and Tuesday, April
14. These assessments have, for the most part, replaced STAR testing. Please note that there will be
schedule changes on these two days. Juniors will show up at 8:45 am on both days for testing, but all other classes will not come to school until later in the day. On Monday, April 13, lunch will begin at 12:45
pm, and 1 period at 1:15 pm. On Tuesday, April 14, lunch will begin at 12:05 pm, and 0 period at 12:40
pm. Periods 1, 3, and 5 will meet on Monday, and Periods 0, 2, 4, and 6 will meet on Tuesday. All classes
will be 35 minutes in length. An informational letter will be sent to families of juniors with more specifics
about these tests.
• STAR Life Science testing will be administered to all sophomores and take place in Science classes on
Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 16. This is the last remnant of STAR testing, and only sophomores are impacted. There will be no schedule changes for Life Science testing
• Advanced Placement testing will be administered during the weeks of May 4 and May 11. A detailed
schedule of testing times and locations will be distributed to all AP students.
After Advanced Placement tests, we can cruise until finals, which will be the week of June 1 (for non-seniors). If
you have any questions about any of these assessments, please contact me by e-mail at [email protected].

From the Guidance Office
2015 – 2016 Registration for Classes
Guidance Counselors have met with most of their students to register for classes for the 2015-16 academic year.
Spring registration is very important for the following reasons:
• The Master Schedule is largely determined by this registration.
• Some classes fill up quickly. There will be less flexibility to make schedule changes later on.
• Your student may be assigned to certain intervention classes to support him or her academically next
year.
Please note that in order for students to be placed in AS Algebra II and AS Chemistry, they must complete both
semesters of Geometry by August 3, 2015.
Summer School
Please remember to visit School Loop to check your student’s academic progress. If necessary, use this time to
consider the options available to students who need to make up an “F” or “D” grade. Summer School 2015 will
be offered at Menlo-Atherton High School as follows:
• First session: Monday, June 15-Thursday, July 2.
• Second session: Monday, July 6-Thursday, July 23.
Both sessions will be held from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm Monday through Friday. There is a strict attendance policy.
Please plan your vacations accordingly.
Guidance Counselors are registering your student for summer school 2015 if he/she met the summer school
eligibility criteria. There are multiple summer school options in the community. Please see the school website at
www.mabears.org for more details. Check under Academics and click on Guidance Resources, then on Resources.
You will see a document titled “Summer Programs 2015.” If a student takes any class outside of M-A, prior approval must be obtained by completing the Concurrent Enrollment Form. This document is also located in this
resources section. This completed form is due to your counselor PRIOR to June 12, 2015 (the last day counselors are on campus).

documento llamado “Summer Programs 2015.”

M-A's Own PSAT/SAT Prep
M-A's Own PSAT/SAT Prep course will begin its second spring session on Monday, March 23, to prep for the
May 2 SAT. Classes will be held on campus each Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 pm for five weeks. There
will be no classes during spring break.
M-A's Own is an intensive course stressing techniques and strategies to enable the sincere student to achieve his
or her best results. The essay is approached on an individual basis for each student. All we need is a willing student and supportive and cooperative parents. The fee for the course, which includes all necessary materials,
ranges from $100 to $225, depending on the number of students enrolled. Once a student takes a seat in the
class, the parent is responsible for the fee.
We began M-A's Own in 1980. This longevity demonstrates our success. To ask questions or to enroll your
child, please contact the director of the program, Jane King, at [email protected].

M-A Drama Presents the Winter Musical
Bye Bye Birdie
Book by Michael Stewart
Music by Charles Strouse
Lyrics by Lee Adams
Originally Produced by Edward Padula
When the U.S. Army drafts Conrad Birdie, a young rock star, his last publicity stunt sends a small Ohio town
into a frenzy. Women love him, men want to be him, and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at
the mere mention of his name. His manager, Albert Peterson, along with Albert’s long-time love, Rose, select a
super fan to receive a goodbye kiss from Conrad for the entire world to see on television. The super fan, Kim
MacAfee, can’t understand why her boyfriend, Hugo, would be upset by her kissing another guy. Rose can’t take
another minute of Albert’s running away from marriage, or his mother; and Sweet Apple, Ohio, can’t handle the
teen rebellion inspired by the arrival of bad-boy Birdie. Will Sweet Apple ever be the same?
Performance dates and times are February 27 & 28 and March 5-7 at 7:30 pm. All performances are at MenloAtherton High School Performing Arts Center, 555 Middlefield Road, Atherton.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION
CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION (CSF)
CSF Week is Coming March 23-27, 2015
The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) exists to promote and recognize high standards of scholarship in California schools.
Membership is based on academic qualifications. Membership is held during the semester following when
the qualifying grades were earned and is for one semester only. In order to become a member, the student must
submit an application each semester the student is eligible. A point system specified in the CSF State By-Laws
establishes the membership requirements. To secure eligibility for CSF membership, a student must earn sufficient points from pre-approved course lists. The majority of the required membership points must come from
University of California accepted course work. The application and course list are self-explanatory about which
courses are used and the limit of classes you can use in order to qualify. Both documents can be found on the
M-A PTA website at http://www.mabearspta.org/programs/csf/. Life Membership is achieved by qualifying for at
least four or more semesters in the last three years of high school. One semester must be during the senior
year. One hundred percent membership is achieved by qualifying for six semesters in the last three years of high
school.
Benefits of membership include the right to list CSF on college and scholarship applications and recognition
at M-A Senior Awards Night and on the M-A Graduation Program. Members will receive a CSF certificate, a
tassel, and a gold cord for graduation day.
Members are also are eligible for small scholarships from the M-A PTA and the CSF organization. Because of
this financial benefit, we encourage freshmen to participate early and get in the habit of doing their applications
each semester they are eligible.
Who can apply? Freshmen through seniors who meet the qualifications.
Applications can be obtained on the M-A PTA website given above and will be available at the CSF tables. Applications will be accepted during lunch all week in front of the Library. Late applications will not be accepted.
The submitted application packet must include:
• A completed CSF application.
• $4.00 application fee in cash or check made payable to M-A HS.
• A copy of the previous semester's report card or transcript.
• A copy of your transcript can now be copied through your student’s Portal account, aka Infinite Campus, at http://portal.seq.org.
• DO NOT GO TO THE GUIDANCE OFFICE FOR YOUR TRANSCRIPT.

NEW EVENT! Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be:
An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania
The M-A Parent Education Series is excited to announce a NEW addition to its spring semester line-up! On
April 6, Frank Bruni, New York Times columnist and bestselling author, is coming to M-A to discuss his new
book, Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania. Register at
http://frankbruni2015ma.eventbrite.com.
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will
be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no." That belief is wrong. And in Where
You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed
competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes. Alice Kleeman, M-A college advisor and a contributing expert to
Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, will moderate the Q & A following Frank Bruni’s presentation.
The final event of the season brings the acclaimed new documentary film, The Mask You Live In, written, produced and directed by Jennifer Seibel Newsom, founder of The Representation Project. This film, from the
makers of the award-winning documentary Miss Representation, takes an unsparing look at how we as a society are
failing our boys. Mark your calendars now for these great events!

(Saturday, March 7, 11:00 am)
The Menlo Park Library will offer a presentation on maximizing Social Security retirement
income where Financial Advisor Delbar Jahanian of Waddell & Reed will discuss the different filing options available to married
couples, divorced individuals, and widows.
The alternative filing options available can often provide monthly lifetime social security
payments higher than the standard filing options that are typically selected. The presentation will be given at the Menlo Park City
Council Chambers, located at 701 Laurel
Street. No registration is necessary. The event
is free, and refreshments will be provided
courtesy of the Friends of the Menlo Park Library. More information on this program and other Menlo Park
Library events is available online at menlopark.org/library or by calling 650-330-2501.
