James Joyce is widely regarded as the greatest writer in English of the 20th century.
In the Portable Joyce, we will read several of the “Dubliners” stories, two chapters of
Ulysses, and a paragraph from Finnegan’s Wake.
In his most recent book on the Psalms, Walter Brueggemann has written that most of the
psalms fall into two major categories – psalms of gratitude and praise and of lament and
complaint. We will explore both types with an eye to asking questions about what this
might suggest about human experience and the life of faith.
Required book: Any translation of the Bible

Celebrating the Jewish Year - Tu B’shevat
Tu B’shevat is the New Year of the Trees. This year Tu B’shevat
is celebrated on Wednesday, February 4. Its name means “the
fifteenth day of (the Hebrew month) Shevat. On this holiday we
celebrate the first signs of spring in Israel, where trees are just
beginning to show their new buds, even though in North America
it is still winter! We celebrate Tu B’shevat by planting trees in Israel
through the Jewish National Fund (JNF), or here in our communities. We can plant
parsley to use for Passover. We can have a Tu B’shevat Seder, tasting a variety of
fruits, nuts and wines (juices). Tu B’shevat is a wonderful opportunity to think about
the environment and care for the earth. (The Chocolate Chip Challah Activity Book)
