Drash v'DaSh: A Shabbat Message and Greeting “A Core in a Score: A Match Made in Matrimony” Three weeks ago, we reported on a woman who, abandoned by her fiancé a few days before their wedding, held a dressdestroying party for her family and friends. For a happier story, consider the case of Briggs Fussy and Brittney Husbyn who, as three-year-olds, were paired up by Briggs’s godmother to walk down the aisle together at her wedding, as ring-bearer and flower girl respectively. Twenty years later, Briggs and Brittney again walked down the aisle together at another wedding … their own. While even those critical of certain trends in the “yeshiva world” to get engaged after only a few dates would probably agree that a twenty-year “time to get to know one another” may be excessive, in reality, preparation for marriage – in the sense of developing the skills and sensitivity for living as partners – is not something that can commence only when one “enters shidduchim”, i.e. begins dating. When a misheberakh is made for a yoledet – a woman who has just given birth – and her newborn baby, already then do we announce our communal ambition and anticipation that the child be raised le-Torah, le-Chuppa, u-le-Maasim Tovim. A Midrash - cited at the beginning of Tractate Sota - famously compares the challenge involved in zivugin (matchmaking) to the splitting of the Sea recounted in our Parasha. While many explanations for this equation have been offered, it is important to observe that traversing the sea was the culmination of a process that had begun decades, maybe even centuries earlier. Long-term commitment complemented by a culture of cultivation enabled the Israelites to ascend to safety at this juncture.
