We, the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, are a Roman Catholic Community, called as disciples and companions of the Risen Jesus Christ, made present through our celebration of the sacraments, our proclamation of the Gospel, our ministries of service and leadership. We are a community who depend completely on God’s grace. We are made equal through Baptism in Christ, and so we commit ourselves to the spirit of collaboration and inclusion. We, as a community of believers, seek to respond to God’s call. Our community is a place, where those who are searching are welcomed, where injustice, in all its expressions, is challenged, where the alienated find a home, and where people are refreshed, reconciled, and transformed as they journey in faith to God! Through the intercession of Mary, the Virgin Mother of Guadalupe, the Patroness of our parish, it is God’s reign that joins us as one in our mission. Stewardship of Treasure Jan 24-25 Gift Cards . $13,488 $ 227 #609 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Women’s Spiritual Spa Day Dear Friends, Peace, blessings and all good to you as we dig out from this past weeks terrible winter storm. I want to thank you for two things. 1- Our collection was slightly higher this past week thanks to the parishioners who made up for the Sunday they missed due to the ice storm. That's the kind of stewardship that makes our parish great and keeps us on the upward momentum we are experiencing. We build our budget based on the weekly Sunday offerings and if inclement weather or other situation prevents others from attending mass those offerings can be lost. Thank you for loving your parish enough to make up for the Sundays you miss. Eventually we will be introducing electronic giving to the parish to safeguard and maintain our weekly budget on course. 2- A while back I asked you to consider providing donations to purchase some new vestments for the church. We had a surplus of donors so I ordered two extra dalmatics. These will be returned with labels dedicated in memory of loved ones. I'm delighted to announce that we will be resurrecting our MEN'S CORNERSTONE RETREAT. I understand that it's been about five years since we've had the men's cornerstone weekend. Cornerstone is 24 hour over night retreat program conducting right here in our own parish. The flow of the 24 hours primarily revolves around the individual witness talks which are always very powerful. We had our first meeting this past Saturday evening with Deacon David, Deacon Andrew and Pete Lombardi. So we are off to a great start. I'm asking any man in the parish to seriously consider attending this retreat. The minor sacrifice has the potential of being life changing. I made my cornerstone weekend when I was a young priest here in the 90's at Notre Dame in North Caldwell and soon worked with Fr. Mike and a great group of men to begin the retreat program here. And aside from a brief hiatus it's been very successful here. I'm also asking the wives, children or other family members of our men in the parish to encourage them to do something for their spiritual lives by attending the retreat. Men often give, provide and do so much for others often neglecting themselves in the process. The Cornerstone retreat experience allows the man to be prayed for, nurtured, and nourished in a warm, welcoming and inviting forum. There is no date as yet for the retreat but we are hoping for mid Fall 2015. Our first meeting is a call to all the men in the parish who have done the weekend to plan, review, and enjoy a reunion on FEBRUARY 9 at 7:30 in the pastoral center . I'm looking forward to seeing you all there and working with you for another great cornerstone experience. Please help spread the word for the Feb. 9th meeting to other cornerstone brothers who may not have read this in the bulletin. Let's keep praying for each other. Fraternal regards Rev. Joseph A. D'Amico Our Spiritual Spa Day will be held on Saturday February 7 from 8:30am -1:00pm. Following breakfast in the cafeteria, we will gather in the auditorium for a wonderful presentation by Sister Antonia Cooper on finding serenity and peace through movement. We will conclude our morning with a Prayer Service followed by an opportunity to “catch up” over lunch. We will then be sent on our way, renewed, refreshed, and rejoicing in the Lord! Come alone, come with a friend, or come prepared to make a friend! Please RSVP to Margaret Gardner, [email protected] or call the rectory at 973-239-5696. OLL Ministry for St. John’s Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers… For an experience both rewarding and enjoyable join our car pool of 5 or 6 people to St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark. We go on the second Tuesday of each month. (When you are available). We meet at the OLL Lakeside Ave. parking lot at 10:45am and go in one car to the parking lot at St. John’s Church which is safe. At the kitchen other volunteers will already have cooked a great meal. Then the new arrivals gather around a long table in an assembly line on each side and fill up the dishes, put on trays which are then taken outside on a conveyer on wheels. The volunteers then go out onto a platform in a fenced in area and at 12:00 begin handing out the dishes to the long line of people waiting to be fed, one at a time—for which they express their gratitude saying “God bless you” and “Thank you.” Yes, they all eat outside at all times. Join us, you’ll love it! Contact Ida Emma at 973239-7034 or Nancy Canavan at 973-239-9472 or [email protected] Stewardship Reflections: “Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.” - 1 Corinthians 7:32 How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this- use the work “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future. #609 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Registration for September 2015 Pre-School—Grade 7 Call the School Office for an appointment Spiritual Adoption Well, your little baby now weighs 6 ounces. He has fingernails and eyelashes. He has his own unique fingerprints which will remain unchanged until he dies. His tastebuds are working. His sense of hearing is present at 14 weeks. There are no major bodily developments anymore. Your spirituality adopted baby is already well-formed, internally and externally. All he needs now is time to gain weight and grow strong. Archdiocese of Newark Anniversary Liturgies Once again the Archdiocese of Newark is preparing for the annual tradition of honoring those couples who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2015. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows: For 50 years— April 19th, 2015 at 3:00pm; 25 and 5 years– May 3rd, 2015 at 3:00 pm. It is the desire of the Archdiocese that every couple deserving of such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy as the presence of a large number of couples will give favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today’s society. For application please the rectory office 973-239-5696. TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice, the Holy One of God. There are, no doubt, both false and true prophets around us today. The whole history of our church is filled with both. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of church authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God's very words filling our mouths. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. JOB OPPORTUNITY Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark is seeking a full time BSW or BA bi-lingual person to provide a broad range of social services for residents of Essex County and administer grant funds. For more information, please contact: Catherine L’Insalate at cl’[email protected] or call 973-266-7978 #609 Page 6 Lent 2015 “Soup and Stations” We have all heard Pope Francis’ challenge to us to take care of the poor. Pope Francis is merely echoing the words of Jesus, who is the champion of the poor and marginalized. If we are to walk in Jesus’ footsteps, then we too must concern ourselves about the needs of others. Please join our parish family each Friday evening during Lent at 7 pm as we gather in the Church for Stations of the Cross. Following the Stations, we will share a supper of soup and bread in the cafeteria. Deacon David will prepare the same soup served that day to our brothers and sisters at St. John’s Soup Kitchen, offering us the experience of sharing a family meal similar to that of the less fortunate in our community. Each person or family will be asked to donate the amount that you were planning to spend on your Friday night meal, either at home or perhaps for a pizza or dining out. These donations will be gathered each Friday evening during Lent, and given to St John’s Soup Kitchen during Holy Week. St. Teresa reminds us that Christ has no hands but our hands….no feet but our feet. This Lent, Our Lady of the Lake parish community will continue to accept the challenge of being the hands and feet of Jesus and reach out to the poor. Please bring your family to join us Friday February 20 at 7:00pm as we begin our Lenten journey! #609 BUNKY’S AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE 144 POMPTON AVE. 973-239-0720 Auto Repairs / Road Service / All Brands New Tires Exhaust Work / Auto Air Conditioning & Brakes N.J.
