Saint George Parish Community Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit 22 E. Cooke Avenue, Glenolden, PA 19036 - 610-237-1633 - www.stgeorgeparish.org 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015 Then they came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this: A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey Him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. Mark 1: 21-18 Presentation of the Lord On Monday, February 2nd, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas Day, since the blessing and procession of candles is included in the liturgy. According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, this day is referred to as the "Purification of Mary." This is known as a "Christmas feast" since it points back to the Solemnity of Christmas. Please join us for the 4:00 PM Mass as we celebrate this special Feast Day. A Prayer for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in 2015 God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son, and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! Contact Us! New Parishioners Godparents We are pleased to welcome new members to our Parish Community. When Jesus taught He spoke with authority. He spoke the word of God as no one had spoken it before. When the Rabbis taught they supported their statements with quotes from other authorities. The prophets spoke with delegated authority - "Thus says the Lord." When Jesus spoke, He needed no authorities to back His statements. He was authority incarnate - the Word of God made flesh. When He spoke, God spoke. When He commanded, even the demons obeyed. Faith works through love and abounds in hope Augustine of Hippo (354-430) remarked that "faith is mighty, but without love it profits nothing. The devils confessed Christ, but lacking charity it availed nothing. They said, 'What have we to do with you' (Mark 1:24)? They confessed a sort of faith, but without love. Hence they were devils." Faith is powerful, but without love it profits nothing (1 Corinthians 13). Scripture tells us that true faith works through love (Galatians 5:6) and abounds in hope (Romans 15:13). Our faith is made perfect in love because love orients us to the supreme good which is God himself as well as the good of our neighbor who is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26,27). Hope anchors our faith in the promises of God and purifies our desires for the things which will last for eternity. That is why the word of Christ has power to set us free from all that would keep us bound in sin, deception, and despair. Bede the venerable abbot of an English monastery (672-735) contrasted the power and authority of Jesus' word with the word of the devil: "The devil, because he had deceived Eve with his tongue, is punished by the tongue, that he might not speak" [Homilies on the Gospels 1.8]. Faith must be nourished with the Word of God Faith is both a free gift of God and the free assent of our will to the whole truth that God has revealed. To live, grow, and persevere in the faith to the end, we must nourish it with the word of God. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds that we may grow in his truth and in the knowledge of his great love for each of us. If we approach God’s word submissively, with an eagerness to do everything the Lord desires, we are in a much better position to learn what God wants to teach us through his word. Are you eager to be taught by the Lord and to conform your life according to his word? "Lord Jesus, Your word is power and life. May I never doubt Your saving love and mercy, and the power of Your word to bring healing and deliverance to those in need." www.rc.net Men’s Retreat There will be a retreat for men on Friday February 27 to Sunday, March 1, 2015 at the IHM Spirituality Center in Immaculata. Father Michael Murray, OSFS, Executive Director of the De Sales Spirituality Center, will be the facilitator. Parish and PREP Building a New Parish Community As we previously announced, our Parish Transitional Team was formed last June, which included members from both Holy Spirit Parish and St. George Parish, who came together to assist Father Oswald by providing consultation, advice, and support during the merge process. With the help of these dedicated individuals, along with the support, encouragement and hopeful spirit of all parishioners, our merge was very successful. And now, as a result, it is time for our Transitional Team to disband. For your information, in next week’s Parish Bulletin we will provide for you an update on the new Pastoral and Finance Councils for 2015, along with an acknowledgement and formal “thank you” to our Transitional Team members. As we continue to build our “new Parish Community,” we ask for your prayers and evangelization efforts to continue. In order for our parish to remain vibrant, we must reach out to those who have fallen away from the Church, those who are in need of sacraments, those who have no faith and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, and, most especially, to our youth who, ultimately, are the future of the Church! Encourage all to get involved, stay involved, and to contact us with questions or concerns. Our “Ask George” box has been placed at the main doors of the church for those who have questions they would like to see answered in the Parish Bulletin. Spread the word! Let others who may not be aware of this know that we welcome their questions and are here to help them. We encourage parishioners and friends to visit our website frequently for updates and upcoming events, to read the Parish Bulletin each week for new articles of interest, and to support the efforts of the Church by spreading the “Good News” of the Gospel. Your efforts will help us lead others to Christ, and after all, by virtue of our baptism, this is what Christ has called each of us to do! And, most importantly, don’t forget Mass on Sunday! May God bless you, one and all. PREP PREP Classes PREP classes will resume on Monday, February 2, at 4:45 PM and 6:45 PM. Happy Birthday On behalf of the Saint George Parish Community, we would like to wish all those parishioners who will be celebrating their birthday this week a Happy Birthday and a healthy year: Philip Bonini, Edward Dougherty, Kristina Dumont, Olivia Gargli, Jerry Golden, III, Joseph Hicks, Concetta LaMarche, Seam Morris, Christine Sharkey, Angeli Taduran, Regina Marchetti, Joseph Nicotra, Dolores Oprocha, Victoria White, Victoria White, Alexander Bilak, Nasario Cross, Kathleen Floyd, Zachary Goss, Joseph McCloskey, Dolores Travia, Kelsey Weber, Theodore Bochanski, Zita Buck, John Connor, Sr, Lindsay Garraty, Edward McQuiston, Michale Napoliello, Kevin Roman, Lauri Schneider, Penelope Alessandrine, Jane Brady, Kaitlyn Brown, Stacey Burns, Ashlee Cathcart, Mason Hageman, Donald Irrgang, Victoria Perekkupka, Nicolas Pfaff, James Wharton, Kefina Wright, Peter Acquarola, William Boylan, Leah Dougherty, Lauren Frampton, Matthew McGowan, Dorothy Mutter, Keely Norbeck, Mary Peidl, Lawrence Penny and Leah Wilkin. Feast of St. Blasé On Tuesday, February 3, we celebrate the Feast of St. Blasé. Many Catholics remember Saint Blaise's feast day because of the Blessing of the Throats, which takes place on this day. Two candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as the blessing is said. According to the Acts, while Blaise was being taken into custody, a distraught mother, whose only child was choking on a fishbone, threw herself at his feet and implored his intercession. Touched at her grief, he offered up his prayers, and the child was cured. Consequently, Saint Blaise is invoked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the throat. We believe St. Blaise was a bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth century. The legend of his life that sprang up in the eighth century tell us that he was born in to a rich and noble family who raised him as a Christian. After becoming a bishop, a new persecution of Christians began. He received a message from God to go into the hills to escape persecution. Men hunting in the mountains discovered a cave surrounded by wild animals who were sick. Among them Blaise walked unafraid, curing them of their illnesses. Recognizing Blaise as a bishop, they captured him to take him back for trial. On the way back, he talked a wolf into releasing a pig that belonged to a poor woman. When Blaise was sentenced to be starved to death, the woman, in gratitude, sneaked into the prison with food and candles. Finally, Blaise was killed by the governor. Blaise is the patron saint of wild animals because of his care for them and of those with throat maladies. In His Footsteps: Take time as Saint Blaise did to find out how you can help wild animals. Find out what is being done to support and protect the wildlife in your area. There is wildlife everywhere, even in cities. Even a birdfeeder can help God's creatures survive. → 5 The Blessing of Throats will take place following all Masses this weekend. 112George - Page Parish, School News and Issues of the Church School News Our Lady of Angels The administration, faculty, staff and students of Our Lady of Angels Regional School would like to thank all those who helped make Catholic Schools’ Week a huge success. God bless! Sincerely, No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston and chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, welcomed passage of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015” (H.R.7) by the U.S. House of Representatives. He said, “By passing this legislation, the House has taken a decisive step toward respect for unborn human life, reflecting the will of the American people. The bill codifies a permanent, government-wide policy against taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion coverage. It also requires health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act to disclose the extent of their coverage for abortion and the amount of any surcharge for that coverage to consumers. Please visit www.PACatholic.org for more information. USCCB Chairman Responds to Supreme Court Decision to take Marriage Cases The U.S. Supreme Court granted a request, January 16, to review the November 2014 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit upholding the constitutionality of marriage laws in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, responded to the Court’s action saying,” A decision by the Supreme Court on whether a state may define marriage as the union of one man and one woman may be the most significant court decision since the Court’s tragic 1973 Roe v. Wade decision making abortion a constitutional right. Archbishop Cordileone added, “Over two hundred years, and consistent with every society throughout all of human history, could be declared illegal. To those arguing for a constitutional redefinition of marriage, one must ask: when did the Constitution suddenly mandate a novel and unfounded definition of marriage? To ask such a question is not a judgment on anyone. It is a matter of justice and truth. The central issue at stake is: what is marriage/ The answer is a bond which unites a man and a woman to each other and to any children who come from their union. Only a man and a woman can unite their bodies in a way that creates a new human being. Marriage is thus a unique and beautiful reality, which a society respects to its benefit or ignores to its peril.” The Supreme court is expected to hear oral arguments in the coming month.
