My Two Shekels
As we haven’t had a holiday to celebrate since Chanukah (with the exception
of Shabbat of course!), we are due, so what a delight that Tu B’Shvat is right
around the corner! The holiday of Tu B’Shavat, which as the name indicates is
celebrated on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shvat (or the evening of February 3 - February 4, according to the secular calendar) and marks the new year for
the trees (Rosh HaIlanot). It dates back to Talmudic times, and marked the beginning of the year for tithing trees, when 1/10 of all crops grown during the year were
given to the temple priests.
After the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and Jews
left Israel, tithing became a thing of the past, but Tu B’Shvat
was still observed in honor of the people’s love for Israel.
Many mark this special day with a special Tu B’Shvat Seder,
where we partake of four cups of wine ranging in color
from white to red to remind us of the seasons.
We also eat three different types of fruit, those with
hard shells, with pits, and those which are completely edible. It is customary to enjoy fruits that are grown in Israel,
such as almonds, dates, olives, figs, carob, pomegranates to
remember our connection to the Land. This year, our community Tu B’Shvat celebration is taking place on February 3, at 7:00 p.m., right
here at Beth Shalom!
Tree planting is also an important custom, and if you don’t want to plant
your own, the Jewish National Fund (JNF) will take care of it for you! The JNF
was established in 1901 as the official land purchasing agency of the World Zionist
Organization, and as part of the wonderful work they have done to physically build
up the state of Israel, they are responsible for planting
Please visit their website: www.jnf.org/trees to make their garden continue to
grow. You have the option of planting in honor or memory of someone, and a
beautiful certificate will be sent to the person or family so designated.
Chag Tu B’Shvat Sameach and I hope to see you on February 3rd!

From the President The Ritual Life
Many emails have gone out recently asking our members to volunteer for one of our many committees. We need
people to step up as we are still so short in many of these
groups.
Our Membership Committee has become one of the most
important committees you can volunteer to be on, helping to
undertake the task of growing our membership so that the
future of CBS can be secure. Please don't sit back and think
that you aren’t needed or necessary or that someone else will
step up and do it.
We seriously need each and every one of you to help
make our CBS home run smoothly so we can have that bright
future. Stephanie Posner is our Membership Chairperson and
is working hard, but she can’t do this alone and needs an
active and supportive committee to help. So please, seriously
consider volunteering where it’s needed most and devote your
time and energy in helping CBS grow.
Thank-you in advance for all you do for our community.

Religious School
We have been extra busy at religious school, and there
have been lots of fun and great discussions all around. I want
to give a huge shout out to our b’nai mitzvah class who has
been working under the direction of the cantor and Karilynne
Cohen. They have helped lead services on two occasions and
have done a wonderful job.
I recently attended a bar mitzvah out of town and as I
sat in services I was once again reminded of the amazing
amount of preparation that our bar/bat mitzvah kids undertake. While it will be a while before these kids take the bimah
for their special day I know in my heart that they will be very
well prepared.
I also want to thanks the parents of our kids. They
are doing a great job of getting their children to services. It is
heartwarming to sit in the sanctuary and watch the children
recite the prayers and sing the songs that they have learned so
well because of their participation.
While on the subject of thank yous I forgot one very
important one. A big thank you to Debra Kaplan who decorated the kid’s bathrooms upstairs. They are now warm and
friendly and the kids really think they look great.
Remember to mark your calendar for February 3.
CBS will be hosting a community Tu B’Shevat program. There
will be a special seder and Israeli dancing along with a fun
craft. This program is designed for kids and adults of all ages!

Vol. XXXII, Issue 5, February, 2015

This month marks the 10th anniversary of incorporating
the ancient ritual of laying tefillin before my morning prayers.
This has changed my life most positively and dramatically.
Why would a Reform Jew feel compelled to wrap tefillin,
you ask? In typical Jewish fashion, I will answer a question
by asking one. What would the reception on your television
set be without cable, Dish, or some other signal? Lousy to
none, right? Well tefillin is the vehicle that strengthens the
signal and improves the “reception” when praying to G-d.
After all, how many of us employ today’s technology in
the form of a smart phone, smart watch, tablet, laptop and/or
desk computer to stay connected to the physical world? So
why not utilize the “technology” available since the days of
Moshe Rabbienu to stay connected to the Higher Worlds as
we pray to the Ultimate Source of All?
In the decade since I have inculcated this ritual into my
life, my prayers are more focused and my relationship with
HaShem has improved, becoming more intimate and reciprocal as a result. I have found inner peace and solitude. It is also
quite fulfilling for me to participate in a ritual that connects
me to my ancestors and 3500 years of continuity with my
people and my faith.
Prayer is more than a list of requests for the Almighty to
grant. Prayer is primarily a way of expressing gratitude to G-d
for His continual blessings and beneficence. When you consider that the word Jew derives from Judah, and that Yehuda
(Judah in Hebrew) means to give thanks, then you come full
circle in understanding the power of prayer enhanced through
the “medium” of tefillin.
In closing, I am reminded of the words of Professor
Alexander Altman who said, “Finding G-d and worshipping
G-d is but another way of saying that we have found our
Self…We are spiritually reborn in G-d and G-d is, as it were,
reborn in us”.

Sisterhood
Due to the fact that I have been out of circulation since
the beginning of December, I have asked two of our officers
to comment on their respective activities.
Dorit Mikulencak writes: "On December 20, 2014 Sisterhood and Brotherhood celebrated Chanukah at the annual
Chanukah party. The party was graciously hosted at the home
Pam and Johnny Sudbury.
"We presented Pam with a wreath made at our December Potluck and Pinterest. Everyone enjoyed several varieties of homemade latkes, great Italian food and other goodies.
The children enjoyed the gift exchange as did the adults. It
was a wonderful evening with great friends, great food and
fun had by all."
Taylor Yates writes: "Our gift wrapping station this year
was very successful; we couldn’t have done it without all of
our fabulous volunteers. We made more money this year for
our charities than in the past. We would like to give special
thanks to Marty Goldsmith for helping us get our spot in the
NorthEast Mall, Pam Sudbury, Lynda Friedensohn, and
Christine Posnock for helping Andrea Snow and myself
schlep supplies to and from the mall.
"We are already discussing what to do for next year,
and are considering having a gift wrapping class or video to
show how to wrap and make bows for all the different size
gifts, just as a refresher for everyone. I would personally like
to thank Andrea and Stuart Snow for all the time they spent
buying supplies, and inventorying everything. We look forward to wrapping with y’all next year!"
Our next Social Action project is collecting personal needs
supplies for The Women’s Shelter. We are looking for items
such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, make-up
(except nail polish,), etc. Iris Jeffreys will have a basket for
collecting the supplies near the entrance to the building.
Dorit Mikulencak is planning a Hamentashen Bake at
CBS on Sunday, February 22, during Sunday School hours.
She is trying to arrange a cooking class. We had proposed a
class at Central Market, but they are now charging a hefty fee,
so we are currently looking for alternatives. Watch for information in a CBS blast.
By the time you read this we will have formed our nominating committee for next year’s officers. Since I am writing
this before our January meeting, I do not know who the chair
will be. If you are interested in serving, or would like to help
on one of the committees, please contact Thressa in the office, or myself. Even if you are not on the board, you are
always welcome to join us for dinner, and/or attend our meetings. Our February meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on Monday the 9th
and we are meeting for dinner at Prince (on Randol Mill Rd
by Cooper) at 5:30 pm. Please make sure to RSVP so we
know who to expect.
There is still time for you to join Sisterhood for 201415. Even if you don’t actively participate, your contribution
helps keep our Sisterhood financially sound. Remember, without you, we are one person short.

ARFTY
. . . continued from page 2
As hosts of this evening I would love to see a TREMENDOUS turn out!
This month’s little known fact...Tu B'Shevat is the
new year for the purpose of calculating the age of trees for
tithing. See Lev. 19:23-25, which states that fruit from trees
may not be eaten during the first three years; the fourth year's
fruit is for G-d, and after that, you can eat the fruit.
Each tree is considered to have aged one year as of Tu
B'Shevat, so if you planted a tree on Shevat 14, it begins its
second year the next day, but if you plant a tree two days
later, on Shevat 16, it does not reach its second year until the
next Tu b'Shevat.

ARFTY packed food for the economically disadvantaged
kids on Wednesday, January 14, for our Weekend Angels
project. Dylan Jeffreys, Iris Jeffreys and the Hebrew School
students and their parents helped with this project. We will
be doing Weekend Angels again on Wednesday, February 18,
at 7:00 p.m. at the Beth Shalom.
Congregation Beth Shalom hosted a Camp Impact Training Weekend for kids who are planning to volunteer this summer. Maddie Markson, Shawn Levy, Bennie Sudbury,
Hannah Jeffreys, and Ryan Silverberg attended. Evie
Fleischer and Ean Robertson also attended along with kids
from Fort Worth, Dallas, Colleyville, and Houston.
Noah Fischer, along with Scott Sloter (Fort Worth),
Mollie Sloter (Fort Worth) and I planned a Saturday morning service where Noah, Mollie, and Scott led the service and
provided the musical arrangements. Ryan Silverberg, Bennie
Sudbury, Hannah Jeffreys, and Joe Mendez read from the
Torah and Jane Mendez, read the Haftarah.
Maddie Markson, Ean Robertson, and Evie Fleischer
wrote and spoke about their thoughts about Camp Impact.
Chanel Sassoon and Dylan Jeffreys wrote their thoughts for
the service, but unfortunately were unable to read them because of prior plans. It was amazing to see the Sanctuary
filled with teenagers. I wish we would have had more members of the Congregation there for this beautiful experience.

Changes in Judaism
I told you last month that I would be writing about “The
Rise of Neo-Chassidus.” That is not some scary TV monster.
It is the new Orthodox approach to Judaism for young Talmud students who are good at reading Hebrew and are not
good at speaking to God. My Google search for Neo-Chassidus
has led me back to “Jewish Renewal and then to something
even newer, “Relational Judaism.”
No matter what we call ourselves, our congregations are
all struggling with the same problems. Membership is dropping, money is short, and people are staying away in large
numbers. Complaints are the same whether we are Orthodox,
Conservative or Reform.
Many years ago, at my daughter’s congregation in Fort
Collins, Colorado, I met Rabbi Zalman Schacter Shalomi and
discovered the Jewish Renewal Movement. The Renewal
Movement, as described in a book by Michael Lerner, believed that we must develop new paradigms in our relationship to God that move away from the image of humans as
sinful worms, so that the praying person can see him/herself
as healthy and a recipient of Creation’s blessing.
The first Renewal service that I went to involved using
drums, symbols and dancing around the synagogue to get more
people involved. I asked my daughter when they were going
to bring in the dancing girls. The Fort Collins congregation is
very successful and has 80 people in their Chevra Kadisha.
My daughter believes that it is because they have enabled a
relationship that their members need in this modern time.
The Orthodox Union had also found a problem with
integrating the young students who they send to Israel to study.
They come home well trained in Hebrew but without a feeling
of talking to God with their prayers.
The term Neo-Chassidus means new chassid and it refers to the spiritual and joyous prayers taught by the 18th
century founders of Classical Chassidim. Today, the Chassidim,
in their congregations all over the world encourage their members to approach Judaism with joy.
It seems to be working for them. In the Orthodox magazine, “Jewish Action” there are many pictures of young Jews
with long beards and side curls dressed in modern sport shirts
and Jeans. They call their movement, Neo-Chassidus. The
article tells us that they have many Rabbis ready to train their
young people in how to relate to God.
When discussing this with my daughter she said that
there was a new movement called Relational Judaism that
stresses providing a structure that we used to call Chavarim
groups. In these groups, we brought new members of our
congregations together based on their common interests like
the ages of their children, their interests in life, or their enjoyment of music or history.
I have now ordered a book from Amazon, Relational
Judaism: Using the Power of Relationships to Transform the
Jewish Community. Maybe when I read that, I will be able to
write another Hashomer article.

2015 Financial Committee Goals
Hi everyone!
It is an honor for me to serve as your new treasurer for
the next two years. I want to share with you my goals for
enhancing financial management, accounting, and reconciliation at CBS.
Here is a list of the Financial Committee goals for 2015.
* Develop a restricted fund policy.
* Pay our monthly bills via ACH.
* Review current monthly bills and look for ways to
save money.
* Increase the frequency of deposits at Chase Bank.
* Integrate income/expense accounts into Quickbooks.
* Generate professional financial statements/graphics for
Board meetings and website
* Receive monthly expense bills electronically (i.e.,
paperless) from our utility, insurance, and telecom
munication providers.
We will update this list, as required, and provide you
with updates on our accomplishments during the year.
To help us provide you with better customer service
support, please use the memo field on your personal checks
to help us assign your donations/payments with one of our
defined income accounts. This will make it much easier for
Thressa and the finance committee members to accurately
track our congregation’s income/expenses and your household donations for income tax purposes.
If you have any questions, please let me know
([email protected]).
– Ben Weiger
