An Application for Optional Schools is available at East High
School or the Department of Optional Schools and Advanced
Academics at the Board of Education, 160 S. Hollywood, C106.
The principal and staff at East High encourage
parents and prospective Optional students to
visit the school. Please call the school office to
schedule a guided tour.
• Overall 2.75 GPA for admissions and scores at or above the
50th percentile on a current nationally normed or TCAP
Achievement Test on the Reading/Language Arts AND
Mathematics subtests or the equivalent.
• On a current Explore, PLAN, or ACT, eligible students must
score at or above the 50th percentile in Reading, English, and
Mathematics.
• On a current PSAT or SAT, eligible scores on Critical Reading,
Writing Skills, and Mathematics sections must be equivalent to
the 50th percentile or above.

• All applicants must have satisfactory conduct and attendance
(including promptness to school and to each class). A total of
more than 15 absences and/or tardies is considered
unsatisfactory.
• The PSAT/NMSQT is required in the tenth and eleventh
grades.
• All Optional students must score Proficient or Advanced on
the appropriate End-of-Course exams.
• Prior to approval, all new applicants must participate in an
orientation interview.
• Active membership in the Technology Student Association
(TSA) is requested of all students enrolled in the Engineering
Program.
To remain in the Optional Programs, students must maintain the
program requirements, a C or above in each course for the
semester, and satisfactory conduct and attendance (including
promptness to school and each class). An “N” or “U” in conduct during any grading period is considered unacceptable.
Transportation is the responsibility of the student’s parents/legal
guardians.

Equipping Students for Success
Known as a stately symbol of quality education in
Memphis since 1948, East High School offers challenging academics in the heart of the city on Poplar
Avenue near Highland, one block from the Benjamin
Hooks Main Library and minutes from local universities and museums. East High School offers an outstanding Optional Program in Engineering, preparing
students for success in their post-secondary studies
and future careers.
The faculty and staff of East High strive to create
a positive learning environment in a comprehensive
setting that prepares students for lifelong learning. All
students at East receive the respect, encouragement,
and opportunities they need to build the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes to be successful, contributing
members of a changing global society.
Preparing for the Future
Students in the Engineering Optional Program are
introduced to career opportunities in engineering,
design, and technology. A full Honors curriculum
emphasizes science, technology, engineering processes
and mathematics to prepare students for success in
the post-secondary and professional arenas of engineering.
For students who wish to get a head start on their
college career, East High plans to offer Dual
Enrollment opportunities. Graduates of the
Engineering program are recruited by universities
across the United States.
In addition to core subjects and courses related to
the school’s Optional Programs, East offers a wide
variety of electives, including a strong art program in which
students frequently produce award-winning artwork. Several
Advanced Placement courses are offered.
