History of Excellence
Great things happen at Snowden! Snowden is a place
where students from a variety of backgrounds learn to work
together toward a bright future for themselves and a greater
Memphis community. Since 1910, Snowden's Enriched
Academics/College Preparatory program continues to offer
outstanding and diverse educational opportunities to students across the Mid-South. Located in historic Midtown at
North Parkway and McLean, Snowden stands as an historic
and progressive center of exemplary education.
Snowden, as the flagship of Shelby County Schools,
serves over 550 Optional students in grades 1-8. As
Snowden continues into our second century of excellence
with awards in academics, creative and performing arts, service, sports, and parental involvement, we invite you to join
us and be a part of our tradition of GREATNESS!
Students and Staff
Snowden has a highly trained and dedicated staff, and
most live and participate in the Snowden Community. We
are proud to employ ten National Board Certified teachers,
two Rotary Award for Teacher Excellence winners, and one
West Tennessee Teacher of the Year.
While serving as a beloved neighborhood school,
Snowden has a student body that represents the best of
Memphis. Snowden students are consistently high achievers
and have a proud tradition of excellence in a wide variety of
academic, fine arts and athletic competitions. Because
Snowden believes in developing the whole child, an individualized guidance program that focuses on academic
achievement, personal and social development, and career
exploration is available for all students.
Elementary Curriculum
8th Grade
Students receive engaging, creative and fundamentally sound
instruction in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies, Health and Safety, Interactive Technology, Creative
Writing, and Spanish.
In addition to a strong academic curriculum, comprehensive
fine arts instruction is offered in Orff Music, Art, and Physical
Education, and beginning in fourth grade, string music is offered.
Our Creative Learning in a Unique Environment (CLUE)* program is one of the best in the district and is available for qualified
students.
The Middle School Experience
Students in grades 6-8 participate in a program of studies
designed to be challenging, enriching, and engaging. The middle
school experience at Snowden is a transitional college preparatory
program designed to combine advanced academic studies with
numerous fine arts options and athletic avenues for students to
discover and explore individual talents and interests. An additional
focus of our middle school guidance program is college planning
and preparedness. Snowden, in collaboration with nearby Rhodes
College, provides unique opportunities such as college campus
explorations, shadowing events, collegiate tutoring, and campus
laboratory experiences for our middle school students.
As part of our commitment to building a better Memphis,
Snowden works with BRIDGES to unite and inspire diverse
young people to become confident and courageous leaders committed to our community transformation. Therefore, all sixth
through eighth grade students participate in the BRIDGES student leadership program. Additionally, seventh grade students are
also immersed in the BRIDGES team-building course.

Parent and Community Support
Snowden’s tradition of excellence in academic, personal,
and social growth is encouraged by a dedicated and professional staff supported by our parents, former students, and
community stakeholders, including an active PTO, the
Snowden Foundation, and our very involved and supportive
community partners, including the Evergreen Historic
District Association, Hein Park Neighborhood Association,
the Midtown Rotary Club, and Rhodes College.
Additionally, testimonials from former students, who
attend area Optional high schools, credit the rigorous Liberal
Arts instruction they received at Snowden for moving them
to the top of their classes in advanced Math and Science
course work. Snowden proudly continues over 100 years of
developing a student community of lifelong learners and
leaders who call Snowden their home and family.
