CMT audition workshop to be held tomorrow Special to The Bruin A magical, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” adventure is soon arriving when local students ages 7-17 will audition for the chance to appear in the classic P.L. Travers “Mary Poppins.” The production will appear on the Bartlesville Community Center main stage July 16-19, 2015. In anticipation of the auditions Children’s Musical Theatre is holding an audition workshop to give local students an opportunity to develop their auditioning skills, whether this is their first audition or they’ve done this before. Students ages 7-17 by September 1, 2015 and residing within a 50-mile radius of Bartlesville are eligible. The audition workshop will be held tomorrow, Saturday, January 31 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Bartlesville Community Center Studio Theatre. This workshop will be helpful for all who wish to audition, but especially those doing it for the first time. Tips on what to expect from the audition process, learn more about being a part of a production, trying to improve their selection possibilities, plus a chance to learn music and choreography from Mary Poppins will be included. The Beginning Workshop fee of $5 may be paid at the door on the day of the workshop. No advance registration is needed. Auditions for “Mary Poppins” will be March 4-8 at Madison Middle School. Appointments for auditions may be made starting February 3 online at www.cmtonstage.com or calling 918-336-0558. The artistic staff for this production includes Director Cranston Dodds, Assistant Director Caitlyn Caughell, Music Director Roberta Eberhard, Choreographer Lesley Jennings, and Orchestra Conductor Travis Dunlap. This professional team will train and direct a cast of 60-80 talented students from the surrounding area for 5 intensive weeks of rehearsals and performances in June and July. There will be high-flying adventure and magic as classic character Mary Poppins, and Bert, the jackof-all trades, introduce us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren't the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that "Anything can happen if you let it." The mission of Children’s CMT- Continued to page 6 Central family and consumer sciences program awarded technology grant Photo Special to The Bruin/ Central Middle School has received a technology grant in the amount of $18,124.95 from the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. The grant, which was submitted by Dr. Stephanie Curtis, Director of Federal Programs, and Laura Williams, Central family and consumer sciences teacher, allowed Central to purchase 25 iPads and a PowerSync Cart. The iPads will be incorporated into the FACS curriculum at Central. Laura Williams is pictured with a class holding the newly acquired iPads. CPOY nominations due today Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Bartlesville Public School District Classified Person of the Year. The annual award is designed to recognize outstanding individuals in their job category for their contributions and service to education. The following departments will have finalists nominated for the award, administrative assistants, custodial/maintenance, school assistants, transportation, technology/ media/health services, school age care and child nutrition. All BPSD employees are eligible to submit a nomination form. Forms were distributed to all BPSD employees throughout the district prior to winter break. Nomination forms must be sent to Linda Jones at Wilson Elementary School and are due by Friday, January 30. A nomination form is available on page 5. Finalists will be selected and the winner will be announced at the 2015 CPOY reception which will take place March 26. Life Principle of the Month: Patience Each month, the Bartlesville Public School District and the Bartlesville Regional United Way designate a Great Expectations Life Principle as Life Principle of the Month. BPSD students, staff and members of the Bartlesville community are encouraged to incorporate the Life Principle into their respective lifestyles as habit. The Life Principle of the Month for January is “patience,” which means, “the ability to wait calmly.” CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINATION FORM 2014-2015 The Classified Person of the Year Award is designed to recognize outstanding individuals in their job category for their contribution and service to education. The finalists selected will be eligible to participate in the Classified Person of the Year Award, which will be announced at our classified reception. The committee hopes to raise $2,000 to offset the cost of renting costumes for the BHS musical in May. Bruins on Broadway organizational committee member Catherine Hine said, “We really want to give the audience an idea of the different aspects of a musical. Acting, singing, instrumental music, behind the scenes...there’s so much that goes into a musical and showcasing that is our goal this year. Along with raising money, of course!” Presale tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Tickets at the door are $5 and $10 respectively. BHS will present the spring musical on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at the BHS FAC. Directed by drama and acting teacher Susan Crabtree and Vocal Music Supervisor Margie Green, the musical will feature the vocal, acting, dancing, technical, stagecraft and instrumental talents of many BPSD students. This effort is made possible with assistance from the Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66, ABB and many other corporate and individual donors. An integral part of CMT and all productions are the board members, community volunteers, and parents of cast members. Volunteers are key players behind stage: making and/or fitting costumes, applying stage make-up, set construction, props management, set decoration, and helping run the show with the many backstage and onstage performance tasks.
