Volume 12, Issue 6
February
AT THE TIME OF PRINTING,
School will NOT be in session
February 16th.
ENJOY the Good weather!
As many of you already know, the Warrick County School Corporation recently approved a large Bond
Issue that was done to make improvements at several of the schools in the county. Fortunately, BHS is one
of those schools that will be seeing some improvements in the next several months!!
On the list of things that we are looking at improving are what we would call “big ticket” items, such as
replacing boilers for better heat in the winter, reconditioning the chillers for better cooling in the fall and late
Spring, replacing roofing in several spots of both buildings, renovating restrooms and locker rooms for both
gym areas. Other areas that will see improvements include the greenhouse roof, west wall and concession
stand of the stadium, painting the football field light poles and replacing our tennis courts.
A few items have already been addressed! Those include more security cameras around the building
(including outside) and a new tray return area for the kitchen.
Also on the list are many (too many to mention) technology improvements, equipment purchases and
replacements, and upgrades to existing opportunities for our students.
A BIG thank you goes out to our corporation administration and School Board, as well as the taxpayers
of our county for seeing the importance of putting dollars into our community and buildings and, ultimately, into
the lives of our students!
THANK YOU!
All student & adult drivers are being asked to slow down, pay extra attention, and drive defensively in our school
zone. This is especially true before school (before 7:40) and after school (2:45 to around 3:00). We have several BHS
students walking to school, and several younger students (BMS or elementary) who walk to BHS to catch a transfer
bus. We are mainly referring to the area between the school and the old Industrial Arts building across First Street. A
crosswalk is labeled with paint and signs. And, plans are in the works to reactivate a flashing yellow light over the
crossing area.
As with all our efforts, students’ safety is our first priority. Whether they are in our building, or traveling to or from school, we want every student to be safe. You may see an increased
presence from law enforcement in and around this area, as well.
If you have any comments or concerns, we are always willing to discuss matters such as
these with you. Feel free to contact us at any time during normal school hours. Thank you for
your cooperation, understanding and efforts in making sure all of our students arrive safe and
sound both to school and back home at the end of the day.

Accuplacer Testing
DEAR JUNIORS & JUNIOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
During the 2013 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed HEA 1005, and
the Governor signed PL 268-2013 into law. A component of this law (IC 20-32-9) requires
public and state-accredited non-public school students who meet specific criteria to take a
college and career readiness exam and potentially receive remediation. The reason for this
is to identify students who may need remediation in reading and/ or math early on and possibly reduce the number of students who need remediation at the college level. The criteria
used to determine whether or not a student is required to take the readiness exam are PSAT
scores and End-of– Course Assessments. Current juniors who earned a PSAT score of 45 or
lower in the Critical Reading and/or Math sections must test. Any junior who has not passed
with the Algebra I or English 10 ECA twice must test. If a current junior did not take the
PSAT during their junior year, the sophomore score is used and must be at 42 or above to
avoid testing.
The Assessment selected to meet the requirements of this law for the 2014-2015 school
year is the ACCUPLACER. These assessments are internet-based computer adaptive tests
that assess reading and mathematics skills. These tests are used to identify students’
strengths and weaknesses in specific skill areas. The results from the ACCUPLACER provide
schools with a detailed assessment of students’ skills, which will assist in course selection
and remediation plans for students.
Students were notified in homeroom during the week of January 26th if they are required to
test. Testing will occur February 4-19th. Because this is a state mandated exam, there are
no exemptions to test participation for those students who fall in the score range. If you
have questions or concerns about this testing, please contact Stacey Flamion in the
Counseling Office at 812-897-6059
Recycle your old Electronics
BHS Earth and Environmental Science classes collect used ink cartridges, cell
phones, toners, iPods, laptops, and tablets to raise funds for school equipment
and field trips. Please help by bringing us your used products. You may give them
to students in Geology, AP Environmental, or Earth Science classes or simply turn
them in at the office with a note for Becky Schnur. If you have any questions,
please email or call Becky Schnur at [email protected] or 897-4701.
Thank you for your help!

COUNSELORS’ CORNER
Boonville High School/ February 2015
Seniors (and juniors planning to begin college in January of 2016) need to file the
FAFSA -Free Application for Federal Student Aid-for a receipt date of March 10! The quickest way to
apply is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students should keep a copy of the form for their own files. It is
recommended that students file online.
College Goal Sunday is February 22 at IVY Tech State College on First Ave. at 2 p.m. This is a
great opportunity to receive help filling out the FAFSA form. Parents and students should bring their
completed 2014 tax returns. For information about College Goal Sunday, students and parents may
visit www.CollegeGoalSunday.org.
Twenty–First Century Scholars must sign the affirmation form by the March 10 receipt date. Students can do this by visiting the 21st Century Scholar Website at http://studentaid.ssaci.in.gov/
scholarenrollment/affirmation/ui/preappquestion.aspx. Be sure to print a copy for your records. See
Mrs. Ulrey if you have questions.
2015-2016 Enrollment: The guidance counselors are hard at work getting schedules ready for
next year. Students should check out the course description bulletin in their IRPs and on the BHS website to help guide their decisions. Parents, if you have questions about which classes your child should
take next year, feel free to contact his/her teachers and counselor.
8th Grade Parent Night: Parents of current 8th graders are invited to join us on Tuesday, February 24th at 6:00 in the BHS auditorium. We will go over all the information you and your student need to
sign up for classes at BHS.
Mandatory Accuplacer Assessment: The State Board of Education and PL 268-2013 requires
all Indiana High Schools to identify and intervene with students who are likely to require remediation in
postsecondary education or require a waiver to graduate from high school. The law directs high
schools to give certain students a college and career readiness exam (ACCUPLACER) and to provide
additional instruction and support for students who do not demonstrate reading for postsecondary education. Students who have not passed the End of Course Assessments for English 10 and Algebra I
and those who scored less than or equal to a 46 on the PSAT exam will be required at take the ACCUPLACER at BHS during the weeks of February 4th—19th. Students who meet these criteria will soon
be receiving more information from the guidance office on this exam. If you have questions or concerns
please contact Stacey Flamion at [email protected] or 897-6059.
Juniors need to sign up to take either the SAT or ACT this spring. February 13 is the registration
deadline for the March 14 SAT. April 6 is the registration deadline for the May 2 SAT, which will be
given at Boonville H.S. and Castle H.S. March 13 is the registration deadline for the April 18 ACT at
Castle H.S. and May 8 is the registration deadline for the June 6 SAT. May 8 is the registration deadline for the June 13 ACT. Get a packet in the guidance office or sign up online at
www.collegeboard.com (SAT) or www.actstudent.org(ACT). Boonville High School C.E.E.B. code is
150-250. Students interested in playing college athletics need to send scores directly to NCAA by bubbling in code #9999.
