am Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal today said
that he will complain to the Election Commission
against the BJP for allegedly attacking his community
in an advertisement.
‘BJP in the past few days has been giving few advertisements personally attacking me. They attacked me
and my children, I kept quiet because Anna used to say
that if someone personally attacks you, you should have
the strength to bear it. But today they have crossed their
limit,’ he told reporters in Delhi.
‘They have called the entire community ‘updravi’.
BJP’s fight is with me, whatever they have to say they
should say it against me, they should not attack the
entire Aggarwal community,’ he said. The BJP advertisement targets Kejriwal for threatening to disrupt the
Republic Day parade last year while complaining this
year that he was not been invited for the event.
Meanwhule, US President Barack Obama has said
China should not feel threatened by good relations
between the US and India, as he cautioned the Communist giant against ‘bullying’ small countries like Vietnam

‘I was surprised when I heard that the Chinese government had put out these statements...China doesn’t need to
be threatened because we have good relations with India,’
Obama said in his first comments on China’s reaction
to his unprecedented second visit to India as president.

q Special teams formed to probe advocate’s murder q Huge number of police at Egmore
NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 2:
Even as the police formed special
teams to nab ‘absconders’ in the
sensational murder case of a lawyer, advocates today boycotted the
Egmore Court, demanding the arrest
of all those involved in the killing of
their counterpart.
The first working day of the
week started on a tense note
at Egmore court, as advocates,
despite coming to the premises
in large numbers, boycotted
proceedings.
‘This is a black day for us. The real
culprit (in the murder of advocate C
Stalin) should be arrested. We have
placed a request in this regard to the
government and the police,’ said one
of the lawyers.
More than 100 policemen were
deployed in the court premises to
prevent any untoward incident.
Stalin was a supporter of S Chandan

Namakkal, Feb 2 (PTI):
A 46-year-old man from West
Bengal was found dead under
mysterious circumstances at an
abandoned ‘dhaba’ in Kumarapalayam of the district, police said
today.
The deceased has been identified
as Sameerkumar, an employee of a
private company in Kerala. The body,
bluish in colour, was found near a
water tank in the ‘dhabha’ used by
truck crew to take bath and wash their
vehicles, they said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Sameerkumar had
boarded a train to Kerala on 27
January to return to work after a
visit to his native place.
However, it was not known how
he came to Kumarapalayam. Police
suspect he could have alighted at
Erode railway junction, which is
around seven kms from Kumarapalayam.
The body has been shifted to

The results were announced after
midnight and ecstatic supporters
of Chandan Babu started celebrating the victory outside the court

Michael and his supporters were
enraged on seeing the celebrations.
‘Michael and his group started hurling stones at their rivals and a violent
clash ensued among the lawyers and
their aides.
They then surrounded and attacked
some of the people who were celebrating. Stalin collapsed after he
was hit on the back of his head by a

The body of Stalin was handed over

Lankan Tamils

from several refugees promising to
take them to Canada.

2007 and has been living at Bhavanisagar refugee camp in Erode

Delhi polls: Kiran Bedi’s
campaign aide quits
Narendra Tandon said that he
resigned late last night from the party
because he could not accept her
dictatorial behaviour
New Delhi, Feb 2:
Kiran Bedi has run into new trouble
- an aide assigned to her election
campaign has resigned from the BJP,
blaming her dictatorial attitude. Bedi’s
starry induction into the party last
month, tailgated with the announcement that she was its presumptive
Chief Minister, has created deep
dissent within the BJP’s branch in
Delhi, forcing the party’s top leadership to take control of the campaign
for Delhi, which votes on 7 February
for its next government.
Narendra Tandon said that he resigned late last night from the party
because he could not accept her dictatorial behaviour. Kiran Bedi said she
had not been informed of his decision.
‘To the BJP, I would say ‘get well
soon’, said Yogendra Yadav of the
Aam Aadmi Party or AAP which is
hoping to form the Delhi government
a year after its last administration quit
in haste.
BJP representatives said that Mr
Tandon’s exit is a low-impact move
and that he was not in charge of Ms
Bedi’s campaign.
His past record is not very impressive. He has created trouble for the
party in the past as well, said spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor.
Kiran Bedi is running for Chief Minister against Arvind Kejriwal of the
Aam Aadmi Party. In the last election, the BJP fell short of a majority,
allowing Kejriwal to form a minority
government. However, after 49 days,
in a major political miscalculation, he
resigned after other parties stalled a
proposal for anti-graft legislation.
Opinion polls have so far given the
BJP the edge. The Prime Minister is
addressing four rallies in the capital
to draw support for Kiran Bedi.

Chennai, Feb 2:
Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther
King were not only contemporary, but
were also ahead of their times, retired
IAS officer B S,Raghavan has said.
Delivering the Rev Dr Martin Luther

the Indo-American Association
(IAA) at Women’s Christian College
here, Raghavan said, ‘Wars have
not been confined to any continent
or country. Nor can peace be any

‘If King learnt from Gandhi, the

can and must learn from King and,
through King, once again from Gan-
dhi. For both belong to the world’s
oppressed in their non-violent resistance against unjust laws and nonimplementation of good laws and
against corruption,’ he said.
There was a need to study Martin
Luther King’s works, Raghavan
added.
‘There is such a thing, in a country
where girls are married off before the

been doing for centuries, is to abet

into a city’s reputed college, were with
regard to the method of learning used
in the institution. ‘I had zero computer
knowledge and basic software like Microsoft tools and Adobe suit gave me
jitters.’ It is said that there are similar
kind of stories doing the rounds at
most college/university campuses
in the city.
It must be said students from rural areas often struggle to come to
grips with things when they enroll
for courses in college in cities and in
many cases choose to call it quits.
This is a disturbing trend, said experts
while adding that it indicates the gap
in teaching standards.
Apparently keeping this in mind,
the State Council of Federation of
Indian Chambers of Commerce and

at renewing the education system, in
turn, to diminish the gap prevailing in

No role in recall of Tamil
author’s book: RSS
Chennai, Feb 2:
The RSS has distanced itself from
the controversy surrounding Tamil
writer Perumal Murugan, saying it
has ‘no role whatsoever’ in the withdrawal of his book.
It also warned ‘some persons like
Subhashini Ali’ of CPI(M) against dragging the organisation’s name into the
controversy and said if they don’t desist
‘from such nefarious activities immediately’, RSS would be constrained to
consider other course of action.
‘The RSS has already made it
unequivocally clear that it has
no role whatsoever in the issue
that led Perumal Murugan to
withdraw his book from the market,’ a statement issued by RSS
leader Manmohan Vaidya said.
It added that some persons like
Subhashini Ali continue to drag the
name of the RSS into the issue ‘with
an ulterior motive to tarnish its name,
which is quite deplorable’.
‘We earnestly hope that better
wisdom will prevail and they would
desist from such nefarious activities
immediately, failing the RSS would
be constrained to consider other
course of action,’ the statement said.
CPI(M) leader Ali -- a former MP,
former Member of the National Commission for Women and vice-president
of the All India Democratic Women’s

an article blaming the Sangh Parivar

The students themselves feel that

High five
here is something about Australia that brings out the best from
Novak Djokovic. The Serbian world number one, won his fifth
Australian Open title on Sunday, a new high in the open era.
Having won his maiden Grand Slam trophy at this very venue in
2008, Djokovic has since come a long way and is now the man to
beat. He has continued to evolve since that momentous day some
seven years ago and enjoyed more highs than lows on the Tour.
Things are far different from when he won his first Grand Slam
title but he continues to rule in Australia. He had a notable 2014.
In addition to winning seven titles, including Wimbledon and the
season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, he tied the knot with
Jelena Ristic and welcomed a son.
At 27, the feisty right-hander has entered a new stage of life,
which may mean a new level for his tennis, mentally and physically.
After an inconsistent performance in his five-set semi-final win over
defending champion Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic again faced adversity
on Sunday during what he called a ‘cat-and-mouse fight’ and came
through in four sets against Andy Murray.
There was a lot of debate as to whether the old order was changing
after Wawrinka (at the Australian Open) and Marin Cilic (at the US
Open) emerged as Slam winners after years of domination by the
so-called ‘Big Four’ (that includes Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal
apart from Djokovic and Murray). However, Djokovic’s triumph in
Melbourne dispels such thoughts to some extent.
The new generation hasn’t been able to challenge the top stars
on a consistent basis though Federer’s humbling by Andreas Seppi
and Nadal’s by Tomas Berdych are sure to raise questions about
their durability and winning chances. However, one thing is certain
Djokovic is certain to rule the roost for a while given the manner in
which he has dodged the upset-minded younger crop.
In the women’s section, Serena Williams, all of 33, continues to
reign supreme. Though she didn’t look at her best through the course
of the tournament, the big American was sharp in dismantling her
nearest challenger Maria Sharapova. Like win, the younger of the
Williams sister seems to be getting better with age and showed no
signs of let her guard slip.
The past two seasons have seen Serena sizzle though not dominate
entirely. However, she has not been pushed off her perch at the No.1
spot in the rankings. That is an indication of her supremacy.
Serena won her 19th Slam in Melbourne and lies behind the
legendary Steffi Graf and Margaret Court and looks like a few more
are on the way.
The powerful American has overpowered her rivals with rutless
precision and she doesn’t seem to be getting any weaker, which isn’t
good news for the rest of the field. Though the likes Petra Kvitova
and Sharapova have won the odd Slam, their inability to beat Serena
consistently at the Majors continues to raise questions.
A young crop of hopefuls including Simona Halep and Eugenie
Bouchard promise a lot but it is different thing to triumph in the
Grand Slam tournaments.
With no real challenge in sight, Serena’s reign seems set to continue
at least for a couple of seasons, at least.
On the men’s side, Djokovic seems best equipped to deal with the
likes of Federer, Nadal, Murray and a handful of other pretenders
including Cilic, Kei Nishikori among others.

No plans to impose tough sanctions
WASHINGTON;
President Barack Obama has said
that the US policy of imposing tough
sanctions on Russia after its actions
in Ukraine has badly hit the Russian
economy, but he ruled out a war
between the two countries amidst
growing tension between them.
‘I don’t think that it would be wise for
the US or the world to see an actual
military conflict between the United
States and Russia,’ Obama said.
‘I think that’s entirely fair. And I think
that is a testament to the bad decisions that Putin is making on behalf of
his country,’ Obama said when asked
if it is fair to say that his Russia policy
has been pretty effective in imposing
real costs on the Russian economy,
but it has not deterred President
Vladimir Putin from creating instability
in Ukraine.
Obama said when he came into
office, he talked about reset of USRussia relationship. ‘I established I

Japan mourns for
reporter Kenji Goto
TOKYO:
Whether in tsunami-stricken northeastern Japan or conflict-ridden
Sierra Leone, the stories of the
vulnerable, the children and the
poor drove the work of journalist
Kenji Goto.
The news of his purported killing
by Islamic State militants sent Japan
into shock and mourning early this
morning, days after his plight as a
hostage in Syria united many people
in praying for his release.
‘I want to cuddle with the people.
That’s the best way to express my
approach,’ Goto, 47, said about his
work. ‘By cuddling with them, I can
talk with the people. I can hear their
views their pain and their hopes.’
A pony-tailed man with a friendly,
carefree laugh, Goto was a veteran
freelance reporter, working often
with other filmmakers and Japanese
TV producers. His comments were
sometimes featured on Japanese
mainstream media.
The 2005 book he wrote about the
suffering of children in Sierra Leone was
titled ‘We Want Peace, Not Diamonds.’
But Goto had always stressed he was
not a war reporter. He had insisted he
was instead devoted to telling the story
of regular people, one step removed
from the war zone.
That took him to refugee camps
and orphanages. He told the stories
of children suffering violence, hunger and nightmares. In a testament
to his charm and integrity, people
responded with an outpouring of
support to try to win his release.
A Facebook page, set up immediately after the first video released
by militants last month, quickly drew
tens of thousands of ‘Likes’ and
photo postings that showed people,
from not just Japan but around the
world, holding up hand-written signs
that said: ‘I am Kenji.’
‘Kenji lives on in all our hearts. In
our daily work. Every time you smile

Kenji always gave us,’ wrote Taku

The meteorite

been shown
to be a 4.4
billion-yearold chunk of the
Martian crust.
Spectroscopic measurements of
the meteorite are a spot-on match
with orbital measurements of the
Martian dark plains, areas where
the planet’s coating of red dust
is thin and the rocks beneath are
exposed, researchers said.
The findings suggest that the meteorite, nicknamed Black Beauty,
is representative of the ‘bulk background’ of rocks on the Martian
surface, said Kevin Cannon, a
Brown University graduate student
and lead author of the new paper.
When scientists started analysing
Black Beauty in 2011, they knew they

The survey also found that 45.8

‘Tweeting helps women
cope with sexism’
Toronto, Feb 2 (PTI):
Tweeting publicly about sexism
could improve a woman’s wellbeing
as it has the potential to let them
express themselves in ways they feel
can make a difference, a new study
suggests.
The study examined whether using
Twitter to respond to sexism could
be done in a public way without any
negative effects to their
wellbeing.
‘We know
women can be
badly affected by experiences of sexism and that responding
publicly can be stressful and risky’,
said Dr Mindi Foster from the Wilfrid
Laurier University, Canada.
A total of 93 female undergraduate
students were randomly assigned to
one of three conditions regarding
tweeting over a three day period.

retail disinvestment
New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI):
To increase retail participation in PSU stake sales,
the Department of Disinvestment is contemplating an aggressive strategy to encourage more
people to open
demat accounts
and reduce the
time taken for the
same.
‘We will meet
SEBI to see if
the time frame
for opening of demat account can be reduced. It
will help new retail investors to apply in the upcoming PSU disinvestments’,
a government official said.
At present, it takes
at least 3-5 days for a
person to have an operational demat account,
which is a must to buy,
transfer or sell shares or
other securities held in the
electronic format. There
are over 2.30 crore demat
accounts in the country.
‘One of the suggestions
that we are looking at is
an aggressive strategy for
creating awareness among
retail investors
to participate in
PSU stake sale’,
the offi cial added.
To attract more
retail investors to PSUs,
the government has already doubled the quota
for such investors in PSU
stake sales to 20 per cent
of the issue size, from 10
per cent earlier. Retail investors, defined as those
who can invest up to Rs

get a price discount of five

Humbling return
for Bayern Munich
London, Feb 2:
The Bundesliga returned from its
mid-season break with a bang as
table-toppers Bayern Munich were
humbled 4-1 at second-placed VfL
Wolfsburg, while in England leading
duo Chelsea and Manchester City
shared the spoils.
The much-anticipated showdown
between the Premier League’s top
two failed to provide the expected fireworks with Chelsea and Manchester
City drawing 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.
A cagey affair never hit the heights
apart from a two-goal burst just before
halftime when Loic Remy fired Chelsea ahead and David Silva quickly
levelled.Chelsea still lead City by five
points with Manchester United, 3-1
victors over bottom side Leicester
City, a further five points back.
Southampton’s European hopes
suffered a blow in a 1-0 home defeat
by Swansea City as Ronald Koeman’s
side were joined on 42 points by Arsenal, who thrashed strugglers Aston
Villa 5-0. In Spain, Karim Benzema
shone for Real Madrid in the absence
of Cristiano Ronaldo with a double
in a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad
in La Liga.
Real lead the Spanish table by a
point and also have a game in hand
over Barcelona who came from behind twice to beat Villarreal 3-2.
Villarreal arrived at the Camp Nou
on the back of an 18-game unbeaten
streak and caused Barca problems
on the counter but the quality of the
Catalan side’s attack was the difference with Neymar, Rafinha and Lionel
Messi scoring.

World Cup
Karachi, Feb 2 (AFP):
Pakistan paceman Mohammad Irfan aims to make
an impression both on the
field at the World Cup as well
as off it, which isn’t hard for a
man who stands at seven feet
one inch.
‘I know people notice me because
of my height and I always try to oblige
them by posing for a photograph,’
Irfan told AFP.
‘I will be ready to pose with fans in
Australia and New Zealand but will
remain focused on my job -- to bowl
my team to victories until we win the
World Cup.’
When Irfan toured South Africa with
the Pakistan team early in 2013, fans
were desperate to have a photo with
the tallest-ever international cricketer.
‘It was big fun,’ remembers 32-yearold Irfan. ‘I had no qualms as I am
very down to earth and when people
request a photo, wanting to compare
their height against mine it becomes
more fun for me.’
On the field, however, Irfan’s top
priority remains to unsettle batsman.
‘It (the World Cup) is a big event
and every player has a desire to play,’
said Irfan.

Big beds and shoes
His giant stature makes him a
dangerous bowler as each ball is
released from a height rarely experienced by batsmen.
If pitched short, the batsman needs
to tackle it with a jump and if pitched
full, it requires guile to dig it out.
But it hasn’t always been an easy
ride for Irfan.
He used to find it difficult to get a pair
of shoes to fit while finding a bed to
cater for him was just as frustrating.
In his younger days, people on the
streets would make fun of this gentle
giant.
Unable to make a breakthrough in
the sport, Irfan once made ends meet
by working in a pipe factory, earning
just 300 rupees (30 dollars) a week.
‘I had quite a few problems because

Perth, Feb 2 (PTI):
English skipper Eoin Morgan expressed disappointment in the manner his side surrendered in the cricket
tri-series final to Australia by 112 runs
here but said that they will come back

on 14 February.
England were bowled out for just

strong opening bowling display as
they allowed
Australia to notch up

they had a

played well but it also encouraged us
that the surface was getting better and
that we could chase down anything
under 300. It is disappointing, having
been beaten in that fashion,’ said
Morgan at the
post-match press conference.
‘One of the tests of this defeat is how
we can come back from it. That’s going to be huge. We were sort of tested
a little bit like this in Sri Lanka and
the guys came back really well and
I have no doubt they will come back
really well. We made bad decisions
and that is disappointing,’ he
said.
Glenn Maxwell scored 95 runs
and then took four wickets to singlehandedly deny England any hopes
of a win, with Mitchell Johnson also
chipping in with three quick wickets to

Washington, Feb 2:
US President Barack Obama has
expressed surprise at the Chinese
reaction over his India visit and said
that there are undoubtedly aspects
of India that make US closer to India,
but China doesn’t need to be threatened because Washington has good
relations with New Delhi.
‘I was surprised when I heard that
the Chinese government had put
out these statements. China doesn’t
need to be threatened because
we have good relations with India,’
Obama told CNN in an interview that
was taped on 27 January, the last day
of his three-day India trip.
‘There’s no doubt that there are
aspects of India that make us closer
to India. Specifically, it’s a democracy
and it reflects the values and aspirations as well as some of the warts of
our own country in a way that China
could not. And so that I think there’s
an affinity there that I feel personally
and I think the American people feel
as well,’ Obama noted.
However, he also stressed that his
November visit to China was a very
successful one, saying he had ‘visited China just a while back and had
some very successful meetings with
President Xi (Jinping)’.

‘Children from affluent
families do well in school’
New Delhi, Feb 2:
If you are an affluent and well-educated Indian, your children are likely
to do better at school. There seems
to be a strong relation between
affluence indicators and children’s
learning outcomes, according to
the 2014 Annual Status Report on
Education (ASER).
‘The credit for a child’s
education goes not just
to the school but to the
parents as well,’ Rukmini
Banerji, director, ASER
Centre, told IndiaSpend.
Affluence ensures that
households tend to be
smaller, allowing parents
to devote more attention to their
children; they can also afford to
pay for supplemental learning aids.
Students in the northern state of
Himachal Pradesh, for example, do
relatively well at math and reading;
Himachal Pradesh being a state that
reports high levels of affluence and
parental education. The same was
true for Kerala and Manipur.
The ASER report covered 577
rural districts across India and
surveyed 16,497 villages, 341,070
households and 569,229
students. The ASER centre is an autonomous
body under the Pratham
network, which works
across rural and urban
areas to help children
acquire basic skills in
reading and arithmetic.
Overall, the situation with
basic reading continues to be grim in
India, with falling levels of learning.
Only a fourth of all children in Standard (Std.) III can read a II Standard
text fluently, a drop of more than 5
per cent over four years. With math,
a quarter of children in Std. III could
not recognise numbers between 10
and 99, a drop of 13 per cent over four
years. So, is there any difference in
outcomes between public and private
schools? The enrolment in private
schools is going up, as we explained
in our earlier report on ASER 2013.
Private school enrolment stood at
around 18.7 per cent in 2006, and
has steadily increased to 30.8 per
cent in 2014.
The learning outcomes of private
schools tend to be much better than
public schools. We can see that
reading and math skills of students
in private schools are much better
than their counterparts in government schools. Overall, there has
been a steady decline in math and
reading skills since 2010 across
private and government schools.

‘China doesn’t need to be threatened because we have good relations with India,’ he said.
‘My belief is that in this moment
in history, there’s an opportunity to
create a win-win formula in which all
countries are abiding by a common
set of rules and standards and we’re
focused on lifting up prosperity for our
people, not at the expense of others,
but together with each other. That’s
what my discussions with Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi have focused
on,’ Obama said.

New Delhi, Feb 2:
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, a day after she
said that India is committed to find an ‘early settlement’
to the boundary issue with China.
Swaraj, currently on maiden four-day visit to China, had
also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will
visit the country in May this year.
Modi’s is scheduled to visit China after Jinping’s India

‘But what we’ve said since the start
of my term in office is China’s growth
shouldn’t be at the expense of other
folks. It shouldn’t bully small countries
like Vietnam or Philippines around
maritime issues, but try to resolve
those peacefully in accordance with
international law. It shouldn’t manipulate its currencies to get itself trading
advantages that others don’t have,’
Obama said.
‘Sometimes we’ve been successful
in getting a response from China on
those issues. Sometimes less so. I
care deeply about China’s success. I
want to make sure that we continue to
maintain a constructive relationship,’
he said.
Asked what he was most proud of,
Obama said internationally, he was
‘proud of the fact that we`ve responsibly ended two wars’ - in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
‘And I think that what we have also
done is reflected the best values
of America,’ he said, citing among
others ‘strengthening alliances with
countries like India, where there`s just
enormous potential, and sometimes
we don`t pay a lot of attention to it’.
‘But I`ve been paying a lot of attention to it, because I think that our future prosperity and security is going to
be tied up with how we`re doing with
1.2 billion aspiring Indians who share
our values and share democracy with
us,’ Obama said.
Poster war in Delhi:
Kejriwal to move EC
New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI):
Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal today said that he will complain
to the Election Commission against
the BJP for allegedly attacking his
community in an advertisement.
‘BJP in the past few days has been
giving few advertisements personally
attacking me. They attacked me and
my children, I kept quiet because Anna
used to say that if someone personally attacks you, you should have the
strength to bear it. But today they have
crossed their limit,’ he told reporters.
‘They have called the entire community ‘updravi’. BJP’s fight is with
me, whatever they have to say they
should say it against me, they should
not attack the entire Aggarwal com-
munity,’ he said.
The BJP advertisement targets
Kejriwal for threatening to disrupt the
Republic Day parade last year while
complaining this year that he was not
been invited for the event.
‘Desh ke karodon log gantantra
divas ko rashtriya parv mante hain,
us par garv karte hain (The country’s
crores of people consider Republic
Day as a national festival and feel
proud about it). Aur apka updravi
gotra isme vyavdhan dalne ko taiyar
tha (And your trouble maker community was ready to disrupt it).
‘This is unacceptable and they
should apologise from the entire
community. We will complain to EC
that BJP has stooped down to racial
Muzaffarnagar riots:
DM’s statement recorded
attacks. Delhi’s people do not like this
abusive politics,’ Kejriwal said.
The AAP chief also called a meeting
of top party leaders at his residence
to deliberate on the issue.
AAP leader Ashutosh came down
heavily on the BJP, saying people will
teach the saffron party a lesson in the
upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
‘BJP stooped another low. Now
it has attacked Kejriwal’s GOTRA
in today’s advertisement. People
belonging to his GOTRA will teach
BJP Lesson (sic),’ he said on microblogging site on Twitter.
Kejriwal has often described himself
as a ‘baniya’ to reach out to traders’
community, which have traditionally
supported BJP.
Deve Gowda
‘quits’ politics
Bengaluru, Feb 2:
Former Prime Minister H D Deve
Gowda has announced his ‘retirement’ from electoral politics. Gowda, 81, has been saying ‘this is my
last election’ for the last three Lok
Sabha polls. But this time, he appears to be serious, as he has announced it well before the next LS
poll in 2019 and has handed over
the responsibility of his constituency, Hassan, to his son Revanna
and grandson Prajwal.
Prajwal, 24, was very active during the LS polls, but was formally
inducted into JD(S) only on Thursday when Gowda announced at
his residence in Bengaluru that he
would not contest any more elections. The grandson has not been
given any post yet, in the party
that has often been criticised as a
father-son one.

on the cause of riots, action taken
by the government officials at that
time and measures to prevent riots
in future, has so far recorded more
than 450 statements including those
of riots victims and senior officials.
The one-member judicial inquiry
commission of Justice (retd) Vishnu
Sahai, former Judge of Allahabad
High Court, was constituted by the
Uttar Pradesh government in September 2013 to probe the Muzaffarnagar riots.

more than 40,000 displaced in communal violence in Muzaffarnagar

India in 2nd spot
Lehmann picks Langer
as next Oz coach
Dubai, Feb 2 (PTI):
Defending champions India will
enter the 11th edition of the ICC
Cricket World Cup in second spot
behind leaders Australia.
After failing to win a single game
in the recently concluded tri-series,
the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side
trail Australia by six points in the
ODI rankings, according to an ICC
media release.
Australia, who won the tri-series
after humbling England in the final,
are comfortably placed at the top
with 120 ranking points followed by
India (114) and South Africa (113).
With just a few more international
matches left to go before the the 50over showpiece event kickstarts on
14 February in Australia and New
Zealand, the 14 competing teams
are gearing up for the warm-up
matches slated between 8-13 of
this month.
Meanwhile in the player rankings,
India’s Virat Kohli is at the number
three spot in the batsman’s chart
with South Africa’s AB de Villers
and Hashim Amla at the No.1 and
2 position respectively.
Melbourne, Feb 2 (PTI):
Australian head coach Darren Lehmann believes former Test
cricketer Justin Langer is
the right person to succeed him, considering the
success he has already
achieved in Western Australia. Lehmann, whose
contract as Australian
head coach was extended recently till mid-2017,
knows that he won’t be
able to continue in this role forever
given the demands that come with
the position. ‘I believe he’ll be the
next coach of Australia,’ Lehmann
told Australia’s Fairfax Radio.
‘He’s done a fantastic job and he
should be very proud of what he’s
achieved in WA. He’s always ringing and asking questions and we’re
always throwing things at him as
well and asking him for different
ideas.’
Langer, who worked with the Australian team as a batting coach and
mentor in 2009 under Tim Nielson,
has achieved a lot of success as
coach of Western Australia and Perth Scorchers since 2012.
Under him, Perth
Scorchers won backto-back titles in the
Big Bash T20 League,
Western Warriors
clinched the Matador
Cup and reached the
finals of last season’s
Sheffield Shield.
‘It’s a really united feeling in the
Australian setup now where the
State coaches are a very important
part of what we’re trying to do,’
Lehmann said.
‘And a guy who’s played over 100
Test matches - you’d be mad not
to take his advice. From our point
of view, we respect him very highly.
‘One thing I do know about this
job is that you can’t do it for a long
period of time because you’re away
270-300 days a year.

ctress Mallika Sherawat says she
is flooded with offers of glamorous roles in Bollywood. .
Ask her why she is choosy about
her scripts, Mallika said, ‘Yes, I am
a little choosy. Usually the roles
that I get from Bollywood are very
glamorous roles. I want to do roles
where I can act and I don’t want to
do just one song and dance. My
character has to be different. If
you are constantly being offered
only glamorous roles, you will not
do it. Dirty Politics is a platform to
show my talent,’ said the actress,

Dirty Politics, which also stars
Om Puri. The Murder star also
shared that she doesn’t believe

I don’t believe in camps. All
these things are not important
