Reports say that Michael Clarke may just meet the fitness deadline to lead the national team into the World Cup starting February 14, even as many Australia cricket officials are mulling appointing Steven Smith as full-time captain after the 50-over showpiece event. Clarke’s recurring fitness issues and his continuing absence during India’s tour has forced Cricket Australia to juggle with a couple of leadership options in the Test and ODIs and it is learnt that the decision makers are keen for a permanent change of guard before this year’s Ashes tour of England. Pointing out that at least three FIRs were there against Subramaniam, a set of Congress activists today registered complaint against him at the Trichy Collector office. Also, Valarmathi made a similar charge against Subramanyam, when nominations of candidates were taken up for scrutiny by the election officials today. The charge against Subramanyam is that he had failed to mention in the affidavit (while filing his nomination papers) that FIR had been filed against him (he had apprently left the relevant column ‘nil’ in the nomination papers) A decision on the nomination of Subramanyam, who runs a group of educational institutions around Trichy, was expected to be out any moment at the time of writing this. Meanwhile, Subramanyam’s supporters have denied the allegations, stating that only those with proven charges were not eligible to contest the elections. As many as 29 contestants, including CPI(M) candidate K Annadurai, filed their nominations on the last day on Tuesday for the Srirangam by-election. In all, 46 candidates are in the fray, pending scrutiny of their papers. The final list will be out on Friday after the scrutiny and withdrawal of candidates. Since morning, the taluk office in Srirangam was buzzing with activity as a lot of candidates, including a substitute for BJP candidate, queued up to file their nominations. (More on Page 7) NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 28: With the Supreme Court in its verdict ordering N Srinivasan to choose between BCCI and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), there is a buzz in the market that real estate tycoon and beau of actress Trisha, Varun Manian may buy the IPL franchise from the beleaguered India Cements chief. According to a report in Sify.com, Varun Manian, a prominent Tamil film producer shares a good rapport with Srinivasan and on many occasions in the past, it is learnt that Srinivasan used his charter flights. And speculations in the social media have it that Varun Manian is a relative of Srinivasan. Recently, delivering its verdict on Mudgal Committee report that investigated the alleged betting and fixing scam in IPL and clash of interest of Srinivasan, said that Srinivasan, to retain his position in BCCI and contest election for the post of president of the prestigious cricket body, should step down from ownership of CSK. The apex court made it clear that Srinivasan can be associated either with the BCCI or CSK, but not both at the same time. Sources in the know say that Srinivasan is keen to retain his hold on the Indian cricket officialdom. And hence is planning some kind of ‘acceptable arrangement’ to technically let go off CSK from his hands (without exactly doing so). Enter: Varun Manian. Sources say that Varun Manian, who recently got engaged to actress Trisha, is a trusted man for Srinivasan. And the talk is he may buy CSK and thereby facilitate Srinivasan to contest the elections in BCCI for the top post. In the past, Varun Manian in his twitter account had come up with posts endorsing Srinivasan’s stand on the BJP, PDP to form govt in J&K? Bomb threat to Udhayam theatre Srinagar, Jan 28: Political grapevine is rife with speculations about the BJP forming alliance with the People’s Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir later this month. The BJP and PDP have reached a broad understanding to form government in J&K, reports said today. Reports indicate both the parties are working to evolve a seat sharing formula and are expected to reach a consensus soon. Also, J&K BJP legislators are scheduled to meet in Jammu today. Senior party leader Ram Madhav will be a part of the meeting. The latest development comes after PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed last week said ‘track two’ dialogue with BJP is in progress. Contending that he wants to bring the State out of a ‘quagmire’, the former Chief Minister told his party workers, ‘Track-II dialogue with BJP over the formation of government in Jammu and Kashmir is in progress.’ NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 28: With just a week to go for the release of Ajith-starrer Yennai Arindhaal, unidentified person(s) sent a ‘threat letter’ to Udhayam Theatre complex in Jafferkhanpet yesterday. According to police, Udhayam theatre on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Jafferkhanpet, received a letter stating that if the movie (scheduled to hit the screens on 5 February), was released, the theatre would be bombed. Following this, theatre manager Hariharan filed a complaint with the Kumaran Nagar police who are looking into the case. Security has now been beefed up at the theatre to prevent any untoward incident. The movie directed by Gautham Menon, stars Ajit, Trisha among others. Varun had recently tweeted, ‘Mark my words NS will continue as BCCI president. He’s an honourable man who has done nothing wrong’. Varun had been spotted escorting Srinivasan in one of the footages shown on television channels recently and this has added to the rumour grist. Interestingly Trisha, who was engaged to Varun Manian, was the brand ambassador of CSK in the first edition of the IPL. Efforts to contact Varun Manian in this regard went in vain. However, there are also rumours running rounds that tyre giant MRF is also the race to acquire CSK. It may be recalled that several movie halls have been at the receiving end of fringe elements in the recent past. For instance, Kamal’s Vishwaroopamand Vijay’s Thalaivaa too faced stiff opposition and theatres scheduled to screen the movies received multiple threats from various organisations. It was only after a considerable delay, the movies hit the screens. No voluntary repatriation of Lankan refugees: CM to PM NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 28: Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said the process of voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the State could be considered only after ‘concrete and credible measures’ by the Sri Lankan government and adequate verifiable assurances on returning to their native land. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a copy of which was released to the media here, he said, ‘The Ministry of External Affairs has written to the government of Tamilnadu inviting a senior officer of the State government to attend an inter-ministerial meeting on 30 January on the issue of voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees to Sri Lanka.’ He said: ‘As you are aware, even now, refugees who want to leave for Sri Lanka on their own volition, do so. Therefore this meeting could be perceived to be an exercise to encourage Sri Lankan Tamil refugees to leave for Sri Lanka. Further, I would like to place on record that the conditions in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka are still not conducive for the refugees to return to their native land.’ He recalled that a ‘momentous decision’ was taken by AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa, which was announced in the Governor’s address in 2011, to extend the benefits of all welfare schemes implemented in Tamilnadu to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. Stating that recent political developments are a cause for hope and have raised expectations of reconciliation, the Chief Minister said: ‘However, there are still apprehensions about the presence of the Sri Lankan Army in Tamil areas. The atmosphere of fear, intimidation and of possible human rights violations has not entirely dissipated. There is a concern that Tamils could be reduced to a minority even in their own traditional habitation areas.’ Actress Vindhya hospitalised NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 28: Noted actress and AIADMK campaigner Vindhya has been hospitalised after she developed some complications in her liver. Wawrinka and Nishikori last met in the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2014 when Nishikori won in five sets. In the third-set tiebreaker, Wawrinka raced to a 4-0 and 6-1 lead before Nishikori saved five match points to level the score at 6-all. But Nishikori tried a drop shot that didn’t clear the net to set up another match point, which Wawrinka converted with an ace, his 20th of the match. NT Bureau Chennai, Jan 28: Apparently unhappy with the frequent reduction in prices of petrol and diesel, the Tamilnadu Petroleum Dealers Association will observe a one-day ‘stop procurement agitation’ from public sector oil companies on 31 January demanding that they should offset the inventory losses incurred by retail outlets due to this and also to urge the Union Petroleum Ministry to withdraw the 22 December 2014 Regulatory Act imposing hefty fine for improper maintenance of toilets in retail petrol bunks. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, president of the association K P Murali said all the 4,400-odd retail petrol bunks in Tamilnadu and Puducherry would stop purchase of fuel from oil companies that day. He pointed out that this would neither cause any inconvenience to consumers nor led to any panic buying as the petroleum outlets will have two days stock. The petrol bunks will be open on that day and the retail outlets will only refrain from procuring fuel from oil companies to register their protest and to seek compensation, he added. Murali further said because due to this stir, the government would stand to lose Rs 26 crore through VAT and Rs 24 crore in excise duty. He said the prices of petrol were reduced 10 times and diesel price was reduced five times from August 2014 to 16 January this year. Inventory losses suffered by the retail outlets ranged from Rs three lakh to five lakh. Ever since the government allowed oil companies to determine the prices of petrol based on the international crude oil prices, the oil firms have been announcing revision of prices on 15th and on 30th or 31st of every month. The Association wanted this to be maintained. Since the latest reduction in prices was announced on 16 January, the oil companies suffered inventory losses, he said, adding, the oil companies has to explore alternative measures to prevent inventory losses to retailers whenever there was upward or downward revision of prices, he added. Similarly, the agitation was also to condemn the Union Petroleum Ministry’s Regulatory order levying a fine in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 if the toilets in the retail bunks were not maintained properly. This has sent shock waves among the retail bunkers and it is akin to treating the retailers as slaves by the oil companies, he said and urged the Petroleum Ministry to withdraw this Sales Regulatory Act. Vice-president of the association Geetha Mathew was among others present. Blend 4 WEDNESDAY 28 JANUARY 2015 WHAT WH AT N NEW NEWS EWS EW S TO TODA TODAY DAY DA Y PR PRIN PRINTS INTS IN TS IS IS NE NEWS WS TTHA THAT HATT CO HA COUN COUNTS UNTS UN TS T The right push he hope that the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement will be operationalised is strong, thanks to broad agreements reached here on US President Barack Obama’s three-day visit. Details will be filled in by the apparatchiks on both sides in keeping with the broad understanding reached between the two leaders, but there is no mistaking that the deal to sign which Manmohan Singh had staked his government, and done unholy deals with stray MPs to pass the majority test in the Lok Sabha, has now been revived. Both on the issues of liability and spent fuel, intricate compromises have been struck, suggesting that the determination of the leadership got over the seemingly intractable differences. Strong leaders invariably manage to get their way, finding solutions for what might appear to be tough problems. Backroom negotiators surmounted two major obstacles, devising an insurance pool for meeting an unforeseen mishap and voluntarily forsaking the right to intrusive inspections of nuclear plants and materials. Mutual trust underpinned the agreements. Sherpas of the two leaders will fill in the blanks. More significantly, Obama was ready and willing to enlist India in a wider strategic and security partnership, something his predecessor had set out to do, but due to the policy paralysis of the UPA and Bush’s own domestic problems, it had to be abandoned midway. The unambiguous mention of the Indo-Pacific region and of maritime security in the South China Sea, the commitment to disrupt the terrorist groups in Pakistan in the joint statement clearly underline a new strategic vision in the Washington establishment. Small wonder, then, there are discordant noises emanating at the highest levels in Beijing. From natural allies, as Vajpayee had first described the oldest and the largest democracies, the US and India, under the Obama-Modi order, are set to become close partners. It is a remarkable journey for the two leaders. Narendra Modi, despite apprehensions that the visa denial would colour his view, accomplished the feat in under eight months of becoming prime minister. As for Obama, legacy issues in the second term seemed to have persuaded him to revise the strategic vision for this part of the world. It is not containment of China that the two leaders have in mind. No. Instead, they are keen on a broader Asia-Pacific compact, offering confidence and security to the entire region against a potentially threatening growing military and economic power. Of course, the soft, human side of the Obama visit was no less fascinating. Modi, ever the consummate player, be it high diplomacy or domestic policy, also attracted notice for his sartorial variety. In comparison, Obama’s stirring address at the Siri Fort Auditorium before his departure reminded of Modi’s Madison Garden performance last September. Indeed, the joint statement issued at the end of Modi’s visit last September did not touch on the IndoPacific region, nor did it talk of disrupting terror groups in Pakistan. The transactional relationship thus far seems to have become transformational in all of four months, thanks largely to the doggedness of Modi to engage the US proactively. And Obama’s realisation that being soft on present and potential disrupters of world peace wherever they might be located, cannot be good for anyone. His desire to make India his country’s ‘best partner’ is the strongest endorsement any US President has offered to take the ties between the two democratic countries to a higher plane. It can be a win-win situation for both countries if the goodwill generated by the Obama visit is actually translated into action. CHENNAI Need to counter Chinese military might, says US Alleges the Communist nation of ‘bullying’ in South Asia WASHINGTON: Expressing concern over growing Chinese military power and its assertiveness, two top retired American generals stressed on the lawmakers the need to develop a strategy to counter-balance Chinese bullying role in South China Sea and the region. While our efforts in the Pacific to keep positive relations with China are well and good, these efforts must be paralleled by a policy to build the counterbalance if China continues to expand its bullying role in the South China Sea and elsewhere, Gen (retd) James N Mattis, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday during a hearing chaired by Senator John McCain. That counterbalance must deny China veto power over territorial, security, and economic conditions in the Pacific, building support for our diplomatic efforts to maintain stability and economic prosperity so critical to our economy,’ Mattis said in response to a question. Testifying before the power Senate committee, General (retd) John M Keane said China’s continuing economic growth has fuelled a major conventional buildup that is beginning to shift the local balance of power in its favour. As a result, Beijing has been emboldened to act more assertively toward its neighbours, especially in expanding its territorial claims which include not only Taiwan but also most of the South China Sea islands and Japan’s Senkaku islands,’ he said. China has embarked on a strategy of regional domination at the expense of US interests as a Pacific nation and decades of partnership with allied countries in the region, Keane said. As such Gen Keane called for developing a regional strategy with US allies to counter China’s desire for dominant control and influence. The clock was ticking towards the 24-hour deadline Islamic State group militants set in their latest chilling video, which warned they will execute freelance journalist Kenji Goto and airman Maaz al-Kassasbeh if they don’t get their way. ‘This was an utterly despicable act, and I am appalled,’ Japanese premier Shinzo Abe told reporters. ‘While we are in an extremely severe situation... I have instructed all ministers to work together for the early release of Kenji Goto.’ ICE, ICE BABY Shinzo Abe ‘The government, in this extremely severe situation, has been asking for the Jordanian government’s cooperation towards the early release of Goto, and this policy remains unchanged,’ he earlier told ministers. Tokyo has thrown itself on the mercy of Jordan since a video emerged at the weekend in which the extremist group announced it had murdered C Haruna Yukawa, a self-employed contractor it had kidnapped in August. After initially demanding a $200 million ransom for the release of the two Japanese men, the group, which rules swathes of Syria and Iraq with a medieval form of Islam, said it wanted Jordan to free Sajida al-Rishawi, a would-be suicide bomber who has been on death row since 2006. Analysts said the changing demands were an attempt to divide close allies of the US-led fight against extremism in the Middle East. They say the IS group is forcing Jordan, a moderate Muslim country, into the position of trying to balance strong domestic pressure to bring its airman home with wariness of harming its important relationship with deep-pocketed Japan. ‘China has embarked on a strategy of regional domination at the expense of US interests as a Pacific nation and decades of partnership with allied countries in the region’ precision strike capability threatens ground and naval forces, forward staging bases and air and seaports of debarkation, he said. Astronomers find oldest known star MIAMI: International astronomers said they have discovered the oldest known star in a distant galaxy encircled by five Earth-sized planets, signaling that planets formed throughout the history of the universe. The system is 11.2 billion years old and was born near the dawn of the galaxy, said the report in the Astrophysical Journal. The star has been named Kepler-444, since it was found with the help of NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft. Its five planets are a bit smaller than the Earth. They circle their Sun-like star in less than 10 days, at a distance smaller than onetenth the distance between the Earth and Sun -- making them too hot to be habitable. But the sheer age of the star has stunned astronomers. At a distance of 117 light-years from Earth, Kepler-444 is two and a half times older than our solar system, which is 4.5 billion years old. Today VOICE MAIL Need for extra hand Sir, Despite the abhorrence of child labour worldwide, many people accept it as a necessary evil. Poverty is often cited as the main cause of child labour. It is widely believed that families will not be able to cope if their children do not work. Parents simply have no other choice. In practice, however, the poverty argument does not hold water. Precisely the opposite is true: child labour maintains poverty. Because children are easy to exploit and are cheap labourers. Children who work and do not go to school will end up in low paid jobs later, and so will their children - and so the vicious cycle of poverty is perpetuated. But the Ernst and Young report said the sector is not in ‘bubble’ territory and that the vast majority of the deals over the past year were based on ‘reality-based’ valuations. The report counted 3,512 mergers or acquisitions in the tech sector in 2014, for a total value of $237.6 billion, the highest figure since 2000. The pace slowed a bit in the fourth quarter, with 959 deals and a total value of $44.9 billion, EY said. Despite the wash-out against Australia here on Monday, they would have gone away happy from their trip to Sydney. The team arrived here knackered from the long tour so far, which was evident in the listless manner they lost to England in Brisbane. That defeat also meant the need to win both their remaining matches to qualify for the tri-series final in Perth on February 1. They practiced for two days, and rested for another two, with the match abandoned on Monday. All in all the team management was able to achieve a balance between time-off and time spent on the field, whilst gaining two points without much sweat. Now their clash with England on Friday assumes the simple nature of a semi-final: winners progress and play Australia on Sunday. The Men in Blue did miss out an opportunity though, and it was to test their new-found bowling combination. At Melbourne, skipper MS Dhoni had chosen three medium-pacers and two spinners. At Brisbane, there were three medium-pacers, one spinner and Stuart Binny playing the all-rounder card. Thanks to his individual good showing against England, he was retained in the eleven, with two spinners and two medium pacers the preferred combination at Sydney. Of course Monday's selection was also influenced by the conditions, cloud-cover and rain having a major say on the day. Even so, despite the need to play two spinners at the SCG, the team management still preferred to keep Binny in the mix. Madison Keys geared up for big challenge Melbourne, Jan 28 (AFP): A fired-up Serena Williams shot down last year’s finalist Dominika Cibulkova today to set up an allAmerican Australian Open semi-final with teenager Madison Keys, who brought sister Venus’ dream run to a grinding halt. Unlike her earlier sluggish matches, Serena was in the zone from the off against the dangerous Slovak, a steely look in her eyes as she walked onto Rod Laver Arena soon after Venus lost to Keys. The powerful world number one blasted 15 aces to pummel the 11th seed 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour and make her 26th Grand Slam semi-final. She has gone on to win 18 major titles. I knew that I had to beat her today because she was in the final and she plays really well on this court so I’m really happy to go through, said Serena, who has been battling a cold and madison keys Makarova. Long-time rival Maria Sharapova made the last four yesterday and will face fellow Russian Ekaterina Smith to be appointed ODI captain after WC Clarke’s recurring fitness issues and his continuing absence during India’s tour has forced Cricket Australia to juggle with a couple of leadership options Sydney, Jan 28 (PTI): Michael Clarke may just meet the fitness deadline to lead the national team into the World Cup starting February 14, even as many Australia cricket officials are mulling appointing Steven Smith as full-time captain after the 50-over showpiece event. Clarke’s recurring fitness issues and his continuing absence during India’s tour has forced Cricket Australia to juggle with a couple of leadership Steven Smith options in the Test and ODIs and it is learnt that the decision makers are keen for a permanent change of guard before this year’s Ashes tour of England. According to Fairfax Media, senior sources in the Australian game say that an ideal scenario discussed is for the 33-year-old to stay in the team, with few disputing that as a world-class batsman he remains in Sunil Narine The powerful world number one blasted 15 aces to pummel the 11th seed 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour and make her 26th Grand Slam semi-final. ICC launches official WC App Australia’s best XI when fit, but play under the leadership of Smith. CA chief executive James Sutherland though said of Clarke on Tuesday that he retained a huge amount of confidence in Michael as a player, captain and a leader. But if reports are to be believed then there is angst over public positions taken by the captain in the past three months and concern about the growing distance between him and Australian teammates. Both Sutherland and CA’s Team Performance manager Pat Howard have denied that there had been discussions about Clarke being replaced. Any decision on the captaincy would have to be confirmed by the CA board, but would be based on the recommendation of the selection panel, headed by Rod Marsh. Clarke said this week that he wanted to continue in the captaincy long term, telling Fairfax Media: I think I’ve earned that respect. Why did Naraine pull off from WC? St John’s, Jan 28 (AFP): West Indies Cricket World Cup chances suffered a major blow with mystery spinner Sunil Narine withdrawing from the squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. According to a release from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) yesterday, Narine requires more time to be able to confidently bowl for a sustained period in international cricket with his new action. While the Trinidadian mystery spinner has not been under any cloud of official sanction from the International Cricket Council, his action was deemed on two occasions during the Indian Champions League T20 tournament last ters meeting in a Grand Slam semi for the first time since Wimbledon 2000. Keys did the job despite carrying a left thigh injury, needing a medical timeout in the second set for treatment. I think just being able to come back from being down and from not being able to move as well ... just being able to kind of grind through that, still manage to win some points, is what I’m most happy about, she said. Among the men, Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych are already safely into a semi-final showdown after beating Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal respectively yesterday. September to be illegal. It was ruled to be in violation of the 15-degree allowance of straightening of the bowling arm and he was banned from appearing for his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the final. Narine declined an offer from the WICB to assist with remedial work to his action and pursued the corrective process on his own. His first competitive foray since the ICL experience was the Nagico Super50 regional 50-over tournament in Trinidad and Tobago which concluded on Sunday. Ivanovic sinks Liverpool as Chelsea reach final London, Jan 28: Branislav Ivanovic`s extra-time header sent Chelsea into the League Cup final at Liverpool`s expense as the London club edged a breathless semi-final second leg 1-0 on Tuesday. The Serbian`s goal gave Jose Mourinho`s side a 2-1 aggregate win, taking them into a 1 March final against either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United and cutting off one of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard`s paths to a golden send-off before his departure for the Los Angeles Galaxy. The 34-year-old now has only the FA Cup and Europa League to aim for, while Chelsea remain on course for three trophies after bouncing back from their humiliating 4-2 loss to thirdtier Bradford City in the FA Cup. Tuesday`s gruelling encounter at an electrified Stamford Bridge will have taken its toll on Mourinho`s squad, however, ahead of Saturday`s crucial home game with title rivals Manchester City in the Premier League, with Cesc Fabregas notably forced off by injury. Chelsea striker Diego Costa is also at risk of respective punishment after twice appearing to stamp on Liverpool players -- Emre Can in the first half and Martin Skrtel, with whom he fought a running battle, in the second. Last week`s first leg was also a spiky affair and a number of contentious incidents made referee Michael Oliver the centre of attention during a break-neck first half in west London. Chelsea had two penalty appeals turned down, firstly when a shot from Willian struck Lucas Leiva on the hand and then when Skrtel appeared to catch Costa with his foot as the burly Spain striker looked to wriggle down the byline. The second appeal was particularly compelling, but Liverpool felt that Costa should have already been sent off by then after he trod on Can`s ankle right in front of the two dug-outs. Boston-area trains, buses and subways were set to resume normal service on Wednesday but delays were predicted. Less destructive Escaping the eye US meteorologists apologised after the so-called ‘Storm of the Century’ proved to be less destructive than predicted. Blizzard warnings that forecast up to 3 feet, or about 91.44 cm, to fall in New York City led officials to close schools, cancel flights and institute a statewide travel ban. But the snowstorm did not pummel parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania with the same punch that forecasters had predicted. Further south, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut escaped the worst of the storm, despite dire predictions by meteorologists and officials. Travel bans in those states were lifted, and New York City`s subway system was restarted after being closed for 10 hours.
