New Delhi, feb 1: A government-appointed committee has recommended constitution of a SIT for re-investigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases. The committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) G P Mathur has submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week and recommended fresh probe of the anti-Sikh riot cases through a Special Investigation Team, official sources said. An order to this effect is likely after the 7 February Delhi Assembly polls as the Model Code of Conduct is in place in the national capital now, the sources said. The anti-Sikhs riots were triggered after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Of the 3,325 victims, 2,733 were killed in Delhi alone while the rest were from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states. BJP had earlier demanded re-investigation into all anti-Sikh riot cases. The Justice Nanavati Commission had recommended reopening of only four of the 241 cases closed by police but BJP wanted the re-investigation of all the other 237 cases. Meanwhile, in a directive which may prove to be a death knell for CIC’s functioning, the government has directed the panel to either do away with its outsourced staff, which constitutes nearly 60 per cent of sanctioned strength, or cut their pay to minimum rates prescribed by it. Doing away with nearly 100 outsourced employees would mean bringing to halt all the administrative work including data entry of hundreds of orders passed daily, entering details of incoming appeals and complaints, segregating them according to each Information Commissioner and determining if they fulfill criteria of complaint and appeals among other. These employees were hired through an outsourced agency by the Commission at the minimum wages prescribed as per norms. This contract is renewed every year. The rescue operations lasted close to two hours, police and fire service sources said. The boy, Kishore had accompanied his father to the Wencobb Chicken Centre for purchase of meat, when he accidentally slipped and fell into the eight-feet long pit, dug up to dump the chicken waste. Even as fire service personnel were engaged in rescue works, oxygen was supplied to the boy. The narrow pit was widened by digging and the boy was rescued after a two hour long battle. Locals lent a helping hand in the rescue operations. The boy was alive and was immediately shifted to a private hospital in the waiting ambulance for treatment. VHS honours eminent neurologist NT Bureau Chennai, Feb 1: Medicine is not just a profession but service to mankind and doctors must make all efforts to fulfill it, said Voluntary Health Service (VHS) president M S Swaminathan. He was participating at the felicitation function of Krishnamoorthy Srinivas, Chairman Emeritus, The Institute of Neurological Sciences, VHS at Adyar on Saturday. Swaminathan praised Krishnamoorthy for his service and for setting up the Department of Neurology at VHS. He also urged the future doctors to continue the legacy. Walking down memory lane with the VHS, eminent neurologist Krishnamoorthy said, ‘I feel so happy to have completed 50 years here. I joined VHS at the request of my teacher Professor K S Sanjivi. When I joined, I used to sit in the verandah of VHS, where the current Neurology Department is situated. There was only one building where the male and female wards were situated’. ‘Everyday I used to come by 7.30 am, attend out patients till 8.30 am and then in-patients till 9 am. After which, I used to go to the Government General Hospital,’ he said. ‘Later, at the age of 58 years, I became the clinical professor of Neurology and retired in 1991. Today I would like to thank my teacher Dr Sanjivi who introduced me to the community and neurology. I always found joy and content in treating patients from a weaker section as 80 per cent of the people who visit VHS are people from weaker sections of society,’ he said. Madurai, Feb 1 (PTI): Insisting that BJP wanted to emerge as an ‘alternative’ force in Tamilnadu, party general secretary P Muralidhar Rao on Saturday said Union Minister Arun Jaitley meeting AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa did not mean that the two parties were coming together. There was no link between Jaitley meeting Jayalalithaa and the possibility of the two parties coming together. BJP wanted to emerge as an alternative force in Tamilnadu, he told reporters. ‘As a Minister, Jaitley could have met the former Tamilnadu Chief Minister for so many reasons, including to get her party’s support in the Lok Sabha to get bills passed. That does not mean the two parties are moving closer,’ he said. This is the first elaborate clarification by a national level BJP leader after a controversy erupted over the 18 January meeting of Jaitley. Last week, BJP state unit President Tamilisai Soundararajan had said the meeting was only to seek AIADMK’s support for passage of crucial bills in Rajya Sabha, where NDA is in a Mock drill held at village near KNPP Tirunelveli, Feb 1 (PTI): Testing the readiness of people living near a nuclear plant to respond to an emergency, a Disaster Management mock drill was conducted at a village near Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in the district yesterday. Officials of Atomic Regulatory board and National Disaster Management board who supervised the drill at Irukanthurai village described it as being perfect, efficient and effective. District Collector M Karunakaran presided. He said 2,000 people were evacuated from the village in four hours by a team who split themselves into four groups to manage the flow of people and vehicular movement. There was also ground support for the entire operation, he said. Karunakaran said information about the disaster was given at 7.15 am and 2000 out of 4800 people were evacuated before 11.15 am. The objective of the drill was create awareness about the steps to be taken in case of radiation, he said. KNPP plant director R S Sundar said the village had been chosen as the wind was blowing in that direction. Sunday Kutcheri touches a milestone q A launching pad for young singers Muralidhar Rao ‘ There was no link between Jaitley meeting Jayalalithaa in Chennai recently. As a Minister, he could have met the former Tamilnadu Chief Minister for so many reasons, including to get her party’s support in the Lok Sabha to get bills passed. That does not mean the two parties are moving closer’ minority. Replying to a question on Ghar Wapsi programme by a Hindu outfit in Chennai on Friday, in which nine Christians were reconverted to Hindu religion, Rao put the onus on the State government to prevent forcible conversions, if any. He said the party is against the practice. ‘If any other organisation like VHP is involved in conversion, it is a law and order problem and the State should take action. Anyway nobody can do anything about voluntarilyconverting to other religion,’ he said. ‘The issue of conversion should be looked in the spirit that if there is conversion... there would be reconversion.’ Rao said the fact that the state government had not registered any case proved there was no such thing as forcible conversion. Rao denied that the party’s candidate for the 13 February bypoll to Srirangam assembly constituency had a criminal case registered against him and said it had not been proven. He said BJP wanted to enroll 60 lakh members in the State and was emerging as an alternative to DMK and AIADMK, with whom ‘people were disillusioned’. While the infighting in DMK was well known, AIADMK government had become dysfunctional, he alleged. ‘People of the state are looking for good governance and development and BJP will be able to deliver it,’ he said. He denied that Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ mantra meant that the BJP government was moving away from its Swadeshi slogan and said it was ‘Swadeshi centric’, ‘ranging from defence equipment to ordinary things he wants made in the country.’ To a question if he expected former Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan, who quit Congress yesterday, to join BJP, he said the question should be posed to her. BJP did not have a hand in her quitting the party, as alleged by Congress, he said. ‘Teamwork leads to greater heights’ NT Bureau Chennai, Feb 1: Students must learn teamwork and through which many success are achieved, said ISRO Programme Director (IRS and SSS) Mylswamy Annadurai. Panel to submit report on attack on fishermen Chennai, Feb 1 (PTI): A Parliamentary Standing Committee said it would submit a report to the Centre on the problems faced by fishermen, including attacks allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy, to enable the External Affairs Ministry find a diplomatic solution to the vexed issue. ‘The Committee visited Ramanathapuram and met affected fishermen. We will submit a report to the Centre on problems faced by the fishermen, including attacks by Sri Lankan Navy, to enable the External Affairs Ministry find a diplomatic solution to the problem,’ Committee Chairman Dr E M Sudarsana Nachiappan told reporters yesterday. He said this after the committee visited the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre at Madras High Court campus and held discussions with officials on this issue, besides also on sending Sri Lankan refugees back to the island nation and also the functioning of legal services in the state. Referring to the Tamilnadu govern- ment’s opposition to sending refugees back to Sri Lanka, Natchiappan noted that the Chief Minister has already written to the Centre, stating that it would not be done till they received a message that Sri Lankan Tamils are able to live peacefully there. He said the committee had also received letters from various associations of Madras High Court Advocates on changing the name of Madras High Court to Tamilnadu High Court and on making Tamil the court language. The matter was pending in the Supreme Court collegium and the Centre was awaiting instructions in this regard, he said. The Committee directed the District Judge and Member Secretary Teekaraman, Tamilnadu State Legal Services Authority, to submit a detailed report on the number of convicted prisoners, undertrials and those granted bail but languishing in jails for want of furnishing surety and unable to furnish it due to their poor financial condition. The triumph means the world number one overtakes 18-time major champions Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert to go a clear second on the all-time Open-era winners’ list, three behind Steffi Graf on 22. It also extends her staggering decade-long dominance of arch rival Sharapova, with the world number one posting her 16th straight victory over the Russian. At 33, she also became the oldest woman to win the title in the Openera, taking her tally at Melbourne Park to six titles in six appearances in the final. Contesting her 23rd Slam final, she surpassed Navratilova and Evert as she chases Graf’s Open-era record of 22. Australia’s Margaret Court, who played many of her match before the Open-era, has 24 titles. Dhoni to be dad soon: Reports Mumbai, Jan 31: India's World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni, who has been under the scanner after the team's poor show in the ongoing tri-series in Australia and also retired from Test cricket. However, there is some good news for Dhoni too. According to media reports, the indian skipper and his wife Sakshi are expecting their first child. Sakshi, who has completed her Hotel Management studies married Dhoni in July 2010. Since then, she had been a prominent fixture during India's games across the globe, was not seen around for quite some time. Aussies beat Koreans to win Asian Cup Sydney, Feb 1 (AFP): Substitute James Troisi smashed home a dramatic extra-time winner as Australia beat South Korea 2-1 to win their first Asian Cup title in an electrifying final. Troisi broke Korean hearts with the very last kick in the first extra period after Son Heung-Min had snatched a magical injury-time equaliser at the end of normal time. A u s tralia's triumph g a v e them a first title since defecting from Oceania nine years ago, while South Korea's anguish continued after they failed to break a hoodoo in the tournament stretching back to 1960. It was a super effort from everyone, said Australia coach Ange Postecoglou. It was a final, it never goes to script. It was tough, you've got to grind it out and the courage the players showed tonight was enormous. Serena Williams The first Australian final in a decade to feature the tournament’s top two seeds was a one-sided affair in the first set although Sharapova rallied to make a contest of it in the second. An intensely focused Williams outgunned Sharapova, cannoning down 18 aces, including a 203 kmh (166 mph) thunderbolt and glaring at her opponent during key moments as Sharapova struggled to stay in the march. Sharapova made a disastrous start when she double faulted to go down a break in the opening game, succumbing to pressure as Williams aggres- sively stood inside the baseline and easily read the Russian’s intent. The American then pounced on a tentative return from Sharapova in the next game to hold serve after swatting a pin-point backhand to the corner of the court. Sharapova, wary of getting into a slugfest with the game’s most powerful hitter, surprised Williams by throwing occasional drop shots into the mix, successfully holding serve. Heavy rain interrupted play at 3-2, with Williams taking shelter and towelling down as the roof was closed, while Sharapova sat courtside then performed warm-up exercises. Williams emerged briefly but went back inside after suffering a coughing fit before the match finally resumed after 13 minutes. The American showed no sign of losing momentum though, blasting an ace with her first shot and then capitalising after Sharapova gave her three break points with another double fault. Allow banned players to make a comeback: Butt Karachi, Feb 1 (PTI): Pakistan's banned former captain Salman Butt has said that those players who have been banned for spot fixing, have a right to try and make a comeback to international cricket once they complete their suspension period. I know some people, including former players have said (Mohammad) Aamir shouldn't be allowed to play cricket again, but I disagree because he has got the clearance from the ICC (International Cricket Council) to play domestic cricket and secondly, he is close to completing his five-year ban, Butt said. Besides Butt, two other players -- Aamir and Mohammad Asif -- were banned for spot fixing during Pakistan's tour of England in 2010 -- and are serving a minimum five-year ban. The trio also served varying jail terms in England for the same offence before returning home. The ICC, this week announced that Aamir could resume playing domestic cricket under the revised anti-corrup- Salman Butt tion laws, although his ban officially ends on September 2 this year. I respect all those people who have different opinions on this issue. But I believe that even if we have made mistakes, we have served our time. Why shouldn't we be given a chance to make a comeback? asked Butt. Aamir has a right to try to make a comeback to domestic cricket. My case is also pending with the Pakistan Cricket Board and I am waiting for further instructions, he added. The former captain said that Aamir had apologised to the nation and deserved a chance to redeem himself. 'I am happy for Aamir and I wish him well. I am confident that soon the PCB and ICC will also review my ban because I am still not finished as a cricketer and I want a shot at a comeback to top level cricket,' he said. Butt said he had also requested the PCB to put in a request with the ICC to review his ban, which ends this year. 'I will also request the ICC to drop my five year suspended ban,' Butt stated. Cong, BJP, AAP field 19 women candidates New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI): Assurances on women safety are galore in the national capital in the run up to the Delhi Assembly polls but when it comes to fielding women candidates, the major parties in the fray have fared poorly. A total of 19 women candidates have been fielded by three major political parties in the contest- BJP, Congress and AAP in the election for the 70-member House. BJP has given tickets to maximum number of women candidates for the February 7 polls including its Chief Ministerial nominee Kiran Bedi who is contesting from Krishna Nagar. The party has fielded eight women including former Union Minister Krishna Tirath from Patel Nagar, former DUSU presidents Rekha Gupta from Shalimar Bagh and Nupur Sharma from highprofile New Delhi constituency, Kiran Vaidya from Trilokpuri, Rajni Abbi from Timarpur, homoeopathy practitioner Nandini Sharma from Malviya Nagar and former South Delhi Mayor Sarita Chaudhary from Mehrauli. The least number of women candidates have been fielded by the Congress which has given tickets to just five women contestants. The prominent names in the list include Kiran Walia, who is contesting from New Delhi Assembly seat against Arvind Kejriwal and President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmishta Mukherjee, who is contesting from Greater Kailash Assembly constituency. Other women nominees of the Congress include Rita Shokeen, Meenakshi Chandela and municipal councillor Rinku. The number of tickets given to women candidates by the three leading parties is in sharp contrast to population of women voters in Delhi. According to electoral roll, a total of 1.33 crore people are eligible to vote out of which over 72 lakh are men and around 59 lakh are women voters. Out of 673 candidates in the fray, only 66 are women. In the 2013 Assembly polls in Delhi, Congress and AAP had fielded six women candidates each while from the BJP five women candidates had contested the polls.
