GATHERING
Prelude
Confession and Forgiveness
All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the
presiding minister begins.
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God,
who spoke light into creation,
who calls us to listen and follow,
who sends us to shine like stars.
Amen.
Let us come before God, confessing our sin.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Holy and merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned
against our sisters and brothers
and against you.
We cherish the values of this world.
We cause others to stumble.
The earth is wounded by our excess.
Have mercy, O God.
Forgive us, renew us,
and raise us up on eagles' wings,
that we may do your will
with courage and delight.
Amen.
Hear the voice from heaven:
"You are my own, my beloved."
God gives power to the weary
and strengthens the powerless.
Be cleansed, be healed,
for in the name of + Jesus Christ,
I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins
and the revealing of God's reign.
Amen.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Hymnal #858
1
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear now to his temple draw near,
joining in glad adoration!
2
Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things is wondrously reigning
and, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?
3
Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
if with his love he befriend you.
4
Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again.
Gladly forever adore him!

Greeting
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
Prayer of the Day
Compassionate God,
you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence
and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.
Bring wholeness to all that is broken
and speak truth to us in our confusion,
that all creation will see and know your Son,
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

WORD
First Lesson
Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Bible, pg. 154
15
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among
your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. 16This is what you
requested of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when
you said: "If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again
see this great fire, I will die." 17Then the LORD replied to me: "They are right
in what they have said. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from
among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet,
who shall speak to them everything that I command. 19Anyone who does not
heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold
accountable. 20But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or
who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the
prophet to speak — that prophet shall die."

Second Lesson
Thanks be to God
1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Bible, pg. 930
Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that "all of us possess
knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2Anyone who claims to
know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; 3but anyone
who loves God is known by him.
4
Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "no idol in the
world really exists," and that "there is no God but one." 5Indeed, even
though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth — as in fact there
are many gods and many lords — 6yet for us there is one God, the Father,
from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
7
It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have
become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat
as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8Food
will not bring us close to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no
better off if we do. 9But take care that this liberty of yours does not
somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if others see you,
who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not,
since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food
sacrificed to idols? 11So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom
Christ died are destroyed. 12But when you thus sin against members of your
family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
13
Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I
may not cause one of them to fall.
Word of God, Word of Life
Thanks be to God
Acclamation
Alleluia. Lord to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel
Mark 1:21-28
Bible, pg. 812
The story has barely begun, and already the battle is joined. Jesus sides with
humanity against every force that would bring death and disease. These
forces recognize Jesus and know what his power means for them. This,
however, is only the first fight. The war will go on much longer.
The Holy Gospel, according to Mark, the first chapter
Glory to you, O Lord
21
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the
synagogue and taught. 22They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught
them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23Just then there was
in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24and he cried out, "What
have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I
know who you are, the Holy One of God." 25But Jesus rebuked him, saying,
"Be silent, and come out of him!" 26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him
and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27They were all amazed, and
they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching — with
authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28At
once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers
Hymnal #752
At the conclusion of each petition, the assembly sings:
Lord, listen to your children praying,
Lord, send your Spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to your children praying,
send us love, send us pow'r, send us grace.

Offering
An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of
those in need.
Anthem during the offering
He Comes to Us as One Unknown
Anthem text:
He comes to us as one unknown,
a breath unseen, unheard;
as though within a heart of stone,
or shriveled seed in darkness sown,
a pulse of being stirred,
a pulse of being stirred.
He comes when souls in silence lie
and thoughts of day depart;
half-seen upon the inward eye,
a falling star across the sky
of night within the heart,
of night within the heart.
He comes to us in sound of seas,
the ocean's fume and foam;
yet small and still upon the breeze,
a wind that stirs the tops of trees,
a voice to call us home,
a voice to call us home.
He comes in love as once he came
by flesh and blood and birth;
to bear within our mortal frame
arr. John Ferguson
a life, a death, a saving name,
for ev'ry child of earth,
for ev'ry child of earth.
He comes in truth when faith is grown;
believed, obeyed, adored;
the Christ in all the scriptures shown,
as yet unseen, but not unknown,
our Savior and our Lord,
our Savior and our Lord.
Offertory
Hymnal #185
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with your free Spirit.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Offering Prayer
Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills
were gathered together to become one bread,
so let your church be gathered together
from the ends of the earth into your kingdom,
for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever.
Amen.
Words of Institution
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take and eat; this is
my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
Come to the table of mercy,
where the feast of life is spread.
Music during Communion
Lamb of God
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
Have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
grant us peace, grant us peace.
Anthem
Lead Me On
Brian A. Schmidt
Lead me on.
Lord, lead me on and guide my path along the way.
Oh, lead me on to brighter days
where peace is born from a hope that lies in me.
Guide me safely through the night, that I may see the sun tomorrow
when the new day has begun.
Oh, lead me on in times of pain, lead me on.
And may my heart be always warmed with thoughts of you.

Hymn
1
Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
calling for you and for me.
See, on the portals he's waiting and watching,
Hymnal #608
watching for you and for me.
Refrain
"Come home, (Come home,)
come home! (come home!)
You who are weary, come home."
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
calling, "O sinner, come home!"
2
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies,
mercies for you and for me? Refrain
3
Oh, for the wonderful love he has promised,
promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
pardon for you and for me. Refrain

Liturgy for Departure of Pastor Jeffrey & Susan Engholm
L=Leader
P=Pastor
C=Congregation
L: Pastor Engholm , on November 1, 2011, we called you to be our pastor:
to proclaim God’s Word, to baptize new members into the Church of Jesus
Christ, to announce God’s forgiveness to us, and to preside at our
celebration of the Lord’s Supper. With the Gospel you have comforted us in
times of sickness and trouble, as well as at times of celebration. Sharing our
joys and sorrows, you and your wife, Susan, have been important to our life
together in the Church of Jesus Christ and in our service to this community.
You have served our congregation faithfully, and you are now leaving our
midst to become pastor of another church. As your fellow members of this
congregation, we wish to honor your ministry among us and bid you farewell
and Godspeed in your new endeavor, bringing closure to your ministry at
Vinje Lutheran Church.
P: I thank the members of Vinje Lutheran Church for the love, the kindness,
and the support shown to me and my family during my active ministry
among you. I am grateful for the ways my ministry has been accepted, and
as I leave, I will carry with me all that I have learned here.
C: We receive your thankfulness and we express our gratitude for
your time among us. Your influence on our faith journey will not
leave us at your departure.
L: Do you, members of Vinje Lutheran Church, release Pastor Engholm from
his duties as your pastor?
C: We do, with the help of God.
L: Do you offer encouragement for his new ministry as it unfolds in his new
congregation?
C: We do, with the help of God.
L: Do you, Pastor Engholm, release Vinje Lutheran Church from turning to
you and depending on you?
P: I do, with the help of God.
L: Do you offer your encouragement for the continued ministry here?
P: I do, with the help of God.
L: We will hold you in our prayers as you begin your new ministry. We
pledge our support and love to you and wish you God’s blessing.
(Laying on of hands.)
L: Let us pray:
C: Gracious Lord God, be with Pastor Jeff and Susan in the coming
days as they leave Vinje Lutheran and follow your call to a new
congregation. And we also pray that you would be with this
congregation as well, as we also take a new step in faith. Because
finally, Lord God, we know that you have called ALL your servants to
ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths yet
untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with
good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is
leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
L: Let us bless the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
L: The Lord’s light, truth, and love be with us always.
C: Amen.
