Year 6
2015
INTRODUCTION
This booklet contains information for Round One 2015 PEAC courses. It also provides a course calendar and contact details.
COURSE SELECTION
Students usually attend one half-day course for the whole round at any of the venues, however there are some full day courses which
usually run for only half the round. Courses run at different times and may vary in their duration. It is imperative to read the Course
Content carefully. Online courses are also available which students can undertake from home or school.
It is recommended that students enter four course preferences to increase their chance of being placed into a course.
Students are advised not to select courses they have previously completed at PEAC. Students who choose such courses may miss out
on a placement altogether.
ADDRESSES & CONTACT DETAILS
In the event of student absences or a specific course enquiry, contact the course teacher. This information will be provided on your
course acceptance letter. For other enquiries contact your PEAC School Coordinator.

Come on a journey into the Underwater World of AQWA. Explore
our amazing Coral Coast and investigate the sea life that makes this
area of coastline so unique. A course for young writers who will
draw inspiration from the stimulating displays at AQWA to create
their own factual storybooks.

Art of
Science
Can bacteria be beautiful? Is there such a thing as a virus with
vibrancy? This course is for those who like to break the boundaries.
Who says that art and science have to be separate? Certainly not
Leonardo da Vinci! Why not combine art and science? You need a
strong interest in science to participate in this course. It allows you to
produce a work of art based on an aspect of science. Maybe you will
paint, perhaps you will sculpt, you could even use photography or
create digital art; the choice is yours. You will be required to provide
an in-depth explanation of the science behind your art. There will be
an exhibition of all work at the culmination of the course.

In this course you will use your design, engineering, mathematical
and scientific skills to build and road-test a racing machine. Learning
about Newton’s Laws of Motion will help you make the best racing
machine that you can. How fast will your machine go? How far will it
travel? How long will it take to stop? You will need to work
methodically in a safe and mature manner – only highly responsible
students should apply.

Mission
Zoo
Good Day PEAC students. Your mission, should you choose to
accept it, is to work with each other in research teams, aiming to
assist Perth Zoo in its conservation efforts. It involves undertaking
extensive research and developing your own ideas which could have
potential for real-life application. If selected, you will report to
Mission Base at Creaney Primary School in Kingsley in week 1.
Weeks 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be spent at Perth Zoo. Weeks 1, 6,7,8,9 and
10 will be at Creaney. It might not be Mission Impossible, but it will
be Mission Challenge.

PEAC Online Courses
The PEAC Online program offers courses to PEAC students who have trouble accessing courses at the regular PEAC Centres, or who prefer to learn in
a more independent and flexible manner. The online learning environment we use in PEAC Online is the same one used by the online secondary
selective program for country students.
By participating in an online PEAC course the students have the opportunity to:
 Develop specific course content outcomes from a variety of Learning Areas;
 Develop skills in personal self-management and using information and communication technologies to share their learning; and
 Work with other like-minded peers from across Western Australia in an innovative learning environment.
Students should be aware that it requires a good deal of self discipline to complete an Online course and that the activities will be as challenging as,
if not more challenging than, those done in the regular PEAC classroom. At the same time, many find the courses great fun and enjoy working with their
online classmates.
Students need regular access to a reliable computer with the Internet and reasonably up to date programs in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We encourage
classroom teachers to utilise the online courses as part of their provision for their gifted students, by allocating at least an hour of class time per week
for the students to work on their online course. This is flexible and can be negotiated between the classroom teacher and student.
Round 1 Online courses commence on Tuesday 3rd March and finish on Friday 22nd May.
To nominate for Centre-based or Online courses, please proceed to the PEAC Web Based Nomination System

Become a Crime Scene Investigator and learn the forensic techniques
that are used to catch Criminals. Practise fingerprinting, handwriting
analysis, DNA analysis, chromatography and more as you use the
evidence and your own deductive thinking to solve a crime online.
Are you a fan of James Bond? Have you ever wondered what it might be
like to spy for your country? In this course you will have revealed to you
some of the many skills of espionage, such as ciphers and codes, covert
operations and ‘dead drops’. You will also research some famous spies
in history and learn about the ingenious technology used by spies of
yesterday and today.
Put on your SCUBA gear and join us as the PEAC Marine Research
cruiser departs on this amazing ocean expedition. Dive and explore the
varied ecosystems of the blue planet from the alien-like creatures lurking
in the deep to the beauty of the coral reefs. Investigate the rich
biodiversity of our oceans and explore ways to protect them.
“A man goes into a bar and asks for a drink of water. The girl behind the
bar gives him a glass of water and then suddenly screams.” What
possible explanations are there? What is it the more you take away, the
larger it becomes? If you love these and other types of lateral and logical
thinking problems, and enjoy a bit of brain gymnastics, then this is the
course for you.
Are you a skilled maths investigator? Do you love to solve intriguing,
brain-teasing problems? Join up as a PEAC Maths Detective and see if
you can get to the bottom of a series of ‘mathematical crimes’. Try this
one for starters: “Several houses have been burgled on the same street.
The order of the houses burgled is as follows: 1, 3, 4, 7, 11 and 18.”
Where will the burglar strike next?
The popular television program, “Mythbusters” is based on the concept of
exploring urban myths and investigating to see if they can be confirmed,
seen as plausible or completely busted”. You will examine a number of
myths, Develop your science investigation skills and select a myth you
wish to study in depth, set up the testing conditions to confirm or break
those myths!
Join the PEAC Online School of Veterinary Science and explore the
wonderful world of animals. Develop your skills and understanding of
taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, pathology and animal behaviour; dissect
a virtual frog; debate some ethical issues; make a diagnosis for your
animal patients once you have graduated.
