Local Gallery supports Community Initiatives
In October last year, new art gallery Number 1. Parnell opened in Rawene with an exhibition of works by local artists around the theme of No Drill, No Spill. Gallery owners Lyn and Linda offered to support the kaupapa with a donation of a proportion of profits to the Hokianga Environmental Protection Group, which is opposing off-‐shore oil drilling. The exhibition raised $1500 for HEPG.
Last Friday night, artists and HEPG members gathered for a shared dinner at the gallery. Manager Dawn Harris formally presented the cheque to Lorene Royal, who thanked all those involved on behalf of HEPG.

The nerves kicked in, but great results, well done all of you, you're all stars!!
Hokianga Athletics Club was invited by host Wellington Athletics to attend the 2015 North Island Colgate Games held from 9 – 11 January 2015 at Wellington's Newtown Park Stadium. Four of our comrades took the long trip and were overwhelmed by the sight of 20+ Athletics Clubs & more than 1,200 athletes, competing in all events for ages 5-‐14 years. Proud parents watched on as the Hokianga Club/Northland Banner came past the grandstands during the 8am Friday morning March around the stadium. I think that’s when the nerves started to set in for our participants. They all put in amazing performances during the weekend, and also had the opportunity to see the sites of Wellington, ie. Wellington Zoo, Te Papa Museum, Cable Car Rides, Mt Victoria, and even the Wellington Airport up close and personal for some as they flew into and out of Wellington. We would like to thank all of you who were able to make this trip happen, and for all your amazing support!!

TELL YOUR OWN STORIES
I am often invited to events, meetings, other gatherings cannot be “objective”. Everything I write is coloured by my with the expectation I will “write it up” for the Newsletter; and people often assume that I will “write it up” if I attend values, my attitudes, my beliefs, despite years of training and experience in “objective” journalism.
something voluntarily. My usual response is that “the Newsletter doesn’t have the resources to cover everything that happens in this busy little corner of the world, and it I would also like to feel free to attend local events and enjoy them as a member of the community, without the expectation that I am there working as a journalist.
would be unfair of me to cherry-‐pick the ones that I find interesting or thought were ‘worth’ covering”.
There are also other reasons.
From time to time I “shoulder-‐tap” someone and ask if they would like to report on an event, and I plan to do that I am very aware that the presence of a journalist can change the nature of a meeting or event, and may stifle more often. Thanks, Janine, for responding to my request for something on the cheque presentation (see p1). Some clubs and groups have “media officers” who keep the free and open discussion. Some people don’t speak up because they don’t want to be reported, because what media informed: so thanks to the Golf Club, the Sailing Trust, the Lions, the Athletics Club and Rawene Netball for they want to say might be critical of other people, including members of their own group, or contain information that should stay within the walls of a meeting. keeping readers up to date with their activities. On the other hand others “grandstand” and monopolise the occasion because they do want to be reported, own meetings, have your own voices heard. I know the kumara is not supposed to speak of its own sweetness. But regardless of what is reported.

The Regatta went well, lots of fun on the beach and on the water. The Laser fleet went exploring up the Waima, whilst Alex Land invited his friends Margie and Phil to join him on the 470 White Tiger. Paul happily started the fleet only to turn and see Alex carelessly sailing along with Margie and Phil floating behind: a gybe had gone wrong and bounced his trusting crew into the briny. All was not lost though, as Alex used his many years experience from the Cowes regatta to haul his mates back on board with a flick of his boat hook.
Our Sunday sailing is possibly going to be at Opononi. Please check with Paul before hand. We are trying to get some boats down to Opo to support the Community Protest against Tasman Oil Drilling.

Gidday Golfers,
Joke At the Club this week again a lot of great work was done by our rakes, weed eaters, mowers and tractor to get the course ready for opening day. Well done Guys…
Four old men went into the pro shop after playing 18 holes of golf. The pro asked, "Did you guys have a good game today?” The first old guy said, "Yes, I had three riders today.” The second old guy said, "I had the most riders ever. I had five.” The third old guy said, "I had seven riders, the same as last time." The last old man said, "I beat my old record. I had 12 riders today." After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about their game went to the pro and said, "I've been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game, but what's a rider?" The pro said, "A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it."
Opening Fun Day: Sunday 1st Feb 2015 at 10am. Starts with the Life Members’ opening ceremony, a 9-‐Hole haggle, Lunch & T h e 2 0 1 4 R o l l o f C h a m p i o n s Presentation. Jokes of the Week
FREE LOCAL CALL 09 9466550
A male driver is pulled over by a cop and the following conversation takes place:
Man: What's the problem, officer?
Cop: You were going at least 75 in a 55 zone. Man: No sir, I was going 65. Wife: Oh Harry. You were going 80.
(Man gives his wife a dirty look.) Cop: I'm also going to give you a ticket for your broken tail light. Man: Broken tail light? I didn't know about a broken tail light! Wife: Oh Harry, you've known about that tail light for weeks. (Man gives his wife a dirty look.) Cop: I'm also going to give you a citation for not wearing your seat belt. Man: Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car. Wife: Oh Harry, you never wear your seat belt. Man: Shut your mouth, woman! Cop: Ma'am, does your husband always talk to you this way? Wife: No, only when he's drunk.
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"
