BETWEEN YOU AND ME
The challenging and exciting
reality of being Jewish and
living in a culture that is
predominantly Christian is
one that most of us confront
daily. Some encounters are
simple and fortifying. (When
we gather together at the High
Holy Days and are momentarily

and intentionally out of step
with the rest of our world, we might feel a sense
of community and belonging.) Other encounters
with this reality are extremely complex. (When our
children ask questions that point to the heart of
our identity and why it’s different from what they
see around them, we may find ourselves at a loss.)
Temple Israel, as a flagship Reform synagogue, is
steadfast in embracing this reality and helping us
navigate it.
It is a beautiful part of the Temple Israel spectrum
that so many different kinds of Jewish families
consider this community their home. Some are
completely immersed in Jewish culture and
heritage. Some families include individuals who
have chosen to convert to Judaism. Some families
are interfaith families, in which one member of the
family has chosen not to convert but supports the
Judaism being practiced by his or her children or
spouse. In many cases, these families are among
the most dedicated to the future of Judaism. Words
fail to express the deep gratitude that the Jewish
community owes such heroes, but all agree that
this kind of commitment is inspiring and impactful.
Temple Israel seeks to be a home for all people
who consider themselves a part of the Jewish story,
whether by birth, by choice, or by membership in
a Jewish family. Temple also seeks to be a source
of connection between people, facilitating the
building of community among individuals and
families. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing
a few ways that all kinds of Jewish families
can connect with one another, including small
discussion groups of interfaith families, a course
on basic Judaism for all which to learn more about
Judaism’s big ideas, and holiday celebrations for
everyone.
Whatever the nature of your Jewish family, I hope
that you have felt and will continue to experience
Temple’s passionate commitment to acceptance,
celebration of individuality, and openness to
conversation and learning.

In 2010, the
documentary The
Race to Nowhere was
released. This film
reveals the stresses
and pressures that
are put on our teens
in their everyday lives - from homework to soccer
practice; from dance competitions to Key Club. The
pressure for our teens to perform and produce is,
on many levels, frightening. The film argues that
we focus so much on performance and production
that many times the most important skills – critical
and conceptual thinking, problem solving, and
creativity – are pushed to the side.
When I first started working at Temple Israel in
September 2014, I immediately began reaching
out to teens and their parents. Interestingly, it was
harder to schedule a time to meet with the teens
than it was with the adults. This was not because
the teens were avoiding me, but rather because
they were so busy. Many times I would take them
out for dessert around 9 pm because that was
when they were finished with their work.
As a parent, I fall into the trap of trying to keep
my daughter busy with activities. Tovah, who just
turned two, already is rushing around from one
class to another, because, like all parents, I want my
child to be successful. We all want to ensure that
our children have bright futures. However, like the

take on too much.
So where does Judaism fit into all of this? How can
Judaism teach parents and teens to slow down;
that the journey up the mountain is so much more
meaningful than reaching the top of the mountain?
Judaism provides us with the tools and guidance
we need to become our best selves. There is no
“one-size-fits-all” Judaism. While we might worship
together, eat together, and celebrate together, we
all must find and determine our own relationship
with Judaism that helps us be ourselves.
As the Director of Teen Engagement, I am focusing
our high school programming to reiterate this to
our teens. My intent is that we provide education
and experiences for our teens that help them
cope with their stresses and
pressures. Judaism provides us
with the tools; let’s share these
tools with our teens so they can
become their best selves.

SCOUT SHABBAT
L’DOR VADOR SHABBAT
Scout Shabbat is celebrated each year during
services on the first weekend in February. Rabbi
Greenstein will be presenting
the Ner Tamid award, the Boy
Scout Jewish religious award for
scouting, during the service to
five Scouts who began classes
last October and studied various
topics, including Jewish Home
Observance, Jewish Study,
The American Jewish Community, Synagogue
Worship, and World Jewry.
L’dor Vador Shabbat is a congregational Shabbat
celebration held several times throughout the
year. Adults and children enjoy worshipping at the
service together. The Shabbat service is designed
to appeal to congregants of all ages
and features participatory music, both
traditional and contemporary.

kiddush and ha-motzi, as well as light the Shabbat
candles during the Friday night service.

GREENER PASTURES
You may not know his name, but you are very familiar with his work. For 30 years,
Temple Horticulturalist Eddie Garrett has taken meticulous care of the nearly 30
acres of property belonging to Temple Israel. By himself.
So when “Mr. Eddie,” as he is very affectionately known by children and
Temple members, announced that he would be retiring effective at the end of
February, it hit close to the hearts of many, including Temple staff members.

My childhood congregation, Temple Beth El in Odessa, Texas, could fit in the sanctuary
here at Temple Israel, building and all. With fewer than 70 permanent seats in the
sanctuary, only four religious school classrooms, and a stained-glass window or two, it was
nothing remarkable. Yet regardless of our Temple’s size and appearance, at least one or
two Friday evenings a month my parents would pack my siblings and me into the minivan
and drive the 25 minutes to Shabbat services. As the only Jewish congregation within a
100-mile radius, we came together each week as a small but mighty community.
Although I did not realize it at the time, sitting in a
service where my family’s presence was necessary
to make a minyan shaped my Jewish identity.
Whether I was looking at the prayer book or poking my
sister in the side, I absorbed the music and prayers of our
Jewish tradition. We learned about the importance of
Shabbat and our Jewish identity as we prayed with our
parents and friends.
When I come to Shabbat services at Temple Israel, I still
am in awe of the size and grandeur of our community.
While my Memphis Temple is a far cry from my Texas
Temple, we still teach our children the same messages
during Shabbat services. Our kids learn their Hebrew
school prayers by singing with the congregation. They understand the breadth and depth of our Memphis
Jewish community as we pray among generations and listen to names read for Kaddish. They absorb the
sweetness of Shabbat as they eat the challah and enjoy seeing their friends. The more we bring our children
to Shabbat services, the more we prepare them for living a Jewish life.
Temple Israel provides a number of opportunities for
families of all ages to join in Shabbat services. Pancakes
and Prayer and Tot Shabbat give families with very young
children the opportunity to pray in an environment where
kids can wiggle, laugh, and play. During our frequent
L’dor Vador services, people of all ages come together as a
congregation. These services are filled with music, warmth,
and a story or two. L’dor Vador is a wonderful way to get
your children excited about coming to services (and the
dinner afterward doesn’t hurt either!). Most importantly,
every Shabbat service is a family service! Come any Friday
evening to share the magic of Shabbat with your entire
family.
Whether in Odessa or Memphis, a community of 30 or 300,
coming together as a family for services is a wonderful way
to teach our children about the importance of Shabbat and our Jewish identity. We look forward to wishing
you and your families a “Shabbat Shalom!” in the weeks to come!

February at the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center will be filled
with several exciting events. On Tuesday, February 3, from 4-5 pm,
parents and children are invited to celebrate the festival of trees at
our Tu B’Shevat Festival.

planting station, handson mushy fun, crafts,
giant Duplo building, Wii
fitness demonstration,
a visit from the
Memphis Botanic
Garden, and a healthy

During the week of February, 16-20, we will celebrate our
grandparents. Grandparents’ Week is celebrated at the Barbara
K. Lipman Early Learning Center for classes Starboard through
Kindergarten. We do something grand every time we bring younger
and older people together. The goal of this week is to recognize, honor,
and thank the Mimmys, Pop-Pops, Bubbes, and Zadies from around
town into the classrooms to share with us their wisdom and talents. If you
have a grandchild in one of our preschool classes, please come read a book,
join us for a meal, or show us your special talent.
We also invite our preschool families to join us on February 18 for a
performance by Opera Memphis featuring Black Roots of Opera. This
experience is made possible by the Mildred H. and Edgar C. Haas, Sr. Family
Endowment for Education.
Grandparents’ Week will culminate on February 20 with a breakfast
and Kabbalat Shabbat. Although we reserve this fantastic week for
grandparents, families are welcome to bring in the “grands” whenever
they may be in town, whatever the date.

TI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The TI Fellowship program raises the bar on young
adult programming by bridging the needs of college
students (finding a job) with meaningful Jewish life.
In its first two years, the TI Fellowship has brought
26 outstanding individuals to Memphis for a
comprehensive professional, communal, social, and
cultural experience.
