Our adult Purim celebration at Temple

(See page 5)
Our Leaders
The Power of Purim
Each year, the week before Purim, my sister and I would perform a hugely important Jewish ritual in
my childhood home: the flipping of the coin. This coin, shimmering in my mother’s palm, held our
hopes and dreams…..our fears and disappointments.
She flipped...”HEADS!” I cried out.
When she caught the coin and showed it to us, it was clear that my sister had won this round. She
would dress up like Queen Esther, wearing the beautiful flowing gown that was reserved for this day
in our dress-up closet, and I---once again----would become the evil Haman, complete with eyeliner
mustache.
Rabbi Jen Lader
But even having to play the villain couldn’t tamper my
joy at celebrating Purim with my temple. I loved the
Purim spiels, watching my rabbis dress up in costume
and get crazy, but most of all, I looked forward to the
Purim Carnival.
Our Purim Carnival at Temple Israel is even better than the ones I remember
through the rose-colored glasses of childhood. Over a hundred teens and dozens of
parents come together to put on an incredible joy-filled event for our families. Local
businesses sponsor t-shirts, donate merchandise, gift certificates, experiences, and
more for our awesome raffle, which helps to raise money for youth scholarships
and programming.
Purim is a topsy-turvy day of silliness and frivolity, but underneath the costumes
and the music, we celebrate the power of our community. In the Purim narrative,
Esther’s bravery and Mordechai’s cunningness saved the Jews----they were
willing to put aside their own safety and comfort for the good of their people,
and we survived yet another attempt to turn Judaism into ancient history.
When you bring your family to our carnival, when you donate to our teens or
purchase a raffle ticket, when you volunteer your time or attend our Purim spiel
in the morning, you are living their dream. You are making YOUR Jewish
community a priority in your family’s life, and sustaining that power for future
generations.
So get out your princess gowns and your superhero costumes, your three-cornered hats and your eyeliner for mustache-drawing.
Get your bowls ready for our immortal Purim goldfish, and your stomachs ready for the delicious food trucks coming to the
carnival. Get excited, because Purim is coming, and it’s going to be amazing!
We Need You!
VOLUNTEER: Volunteer to help run the Purim Carnival! We need adults AND teens.
GIVE: Sponsor the carnival, donate to our raffle, or give a gift to our teen scholarship fund.
PLAY: Purchase raffle tickets in advance to win one of our incredible prizes.

Shamor L’amour
A Healthy Relationship
Shabbat
FEBRUARY 13-15
On Shabbat we hold two commandments sacred
– “shamor v’zachor” – protect and remember.
But to truly create a sacred space in the home
for Shabbat, we must have a home that is at
peace; a home of loving, healthy relationships
and connections; a home where love is protected.
During the Shabbat of
February 13-15th, we
invite you to celebrate a very
special Shabbat – a Shabbat
of “Shamor L’Amour.”

EYEGLASS RECYCLING
Temple Israel is pleased to partner with the Lions Club of Novi in an eyeglass recycling program.
Lions have been collecting glasses for more than 80 years. Refractive errors can be easily corrected
with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions
have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and continue to lend their support to the
Lions Recycle for Sight Program. Congregants may drop off eyeglasses in the drop box at the
Tyner entrance.
INK CARTRIDGE RECYCLING
Temple Israel is part of the Cartridge World print cartridge recycling program, which provides an
easy method for recycling used ink jet and laser print cartridges, while simultaneously supplying
Temple with copy paper.
Want to participate in this exciting program? Congregants may drop off their empty ink jet and
laser cartridges in the collection bins at Temple’s Tyner entrance.
For each ink jet cartridge that is turned in, Temple will receive one ream of copy paper, and for
each laser cartridge that is submitted, we will receive two reams of copy paper. At the same time,
your ink cartridge, which would otherwise have ended up in a landfill, will now be recycled.
BATTERY RECYCLING
Temple Israel is pleased to partner with Batteries Plus in Farmington Hills in this recycling
initiative! Improper disposal of batteries can lead to contamination of soil and ground water.
Recycling transforms the harmful elements from landfills into new products ranging from wheel
weights to chrome vehicle bumpers.
We have collection bins in the Tyner entrance. We will collect most types of batteries (alkaline,
cell phone, laptop, etc…) NO CAR BATTERIES, PLEASE.

The Goodman
Family Judaic &
Archival Museum
During the month of February, the Goodman
Family Judaic and Archival Museum will
continue to feature a unique exhibit curated by
the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute
of Religion Museum entitled, “The Seventh
Day: Revisiting Shabbat.”
“International artists explore one of the pillars
of Jewish practice and belief: the sanctity of
the Sabbath through provocative works of art.
In an era when technology and culture have
eroded the boundaries separating work, play,
and repose, their works invite us to delve into
the possibilities and new definitions of renewal
symbolized by the ‘day of rest.’ Through
the crucible of their creativity, the artists in
this exhibition offer new ways to imagine
Shabbat and reflect the profound insights
that Abraham Joshua Heschel observed in
The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man:
‘The meaning of the Sabbath is to celebrate
time rather than space. Six days a week we live
under the tyranny of things of space; on the
Sabbath we try to become attuned to holiness
in time. It is a day on which we are called
upon to share in what is eternal in time, to
turn from the results of creation to the mystery
of creation, from the world of creation to the
creation of the world.’”

piano
Sunday, March 8, 2015 • 7:30 PM
Temple Israel is pleased to welcome the internationally known pianist
Ivan Moshchuk.
The twenty-three-year-old pianist Moschuk has become recognized for
his “rare combination of breathtaking technique and genuine musicality”
(Kalamazoo Gazette) and an ability to create “a density that lets you feel
the spiritual aspects of the music.” (Zofinger Zeitung).
Moshchuk, a native of Michigan, is known for pushing the limits of the
piano as evident in his recent performances of Bach and Rachmaninoff.
Moshchuk is currently on tour with part one of a remarkable all Chopin
program.
Don’t miss this truly special musical event!

Mission Statement: After the death of a loved
one, there are so many thoughts, feelings and
experiences to deal with. Accepting the death of
a loved one requires one to fully experience their
grief. Sharing one’s grief within a group setting
enables grievers to recognize the commonality
of their experiences while also defining the
uniqueness of their grief.
• Focuses on helping those dealing with the loss
of a loved one, to remember and move on.
• Provides support in a healing environment.
• Group led by a trained professional who
offers confidentiality, warmth and a place to
come share.

story deals with what it feels like to be different

BOOK FAIR
March 31-April 2, 2015
24 February 2015 • Shevat/Adar 5775
The 17th Annual Temple Israel Book Fair was a great success! With the help of 50 volunteers and
the support of the entire congregation, the Book Fair raised funds to further develop our library
collections and programs. Celebrated children’s author Alice McGinty presented fabulous programs
for our Early Childhood Center students, parents, and teachers; Temple Israel hosted the hugely
successful AIPAC event with Son of Hamas author Mosab Hassan Yousef; and pirates crashed
the Chanukah Storytime Breakfast featuring Cantor Smalash and Sue Simon in a musical pirate
adventure story. These wonderful programs would not have been possible without the year-long
work of the Book Fair Committee members and support from the Newman Family Fund, the
Helen M. Pickett Children’s Reading Fund and the Phyllis Hellman Children’s Literature Fund.

In Memory: Shirley Lachman Fink
Temple Israel recently said good bye to beloved Temple member and past president, Shirley Lachman Fink.
A resident of Boynton Beach, Florida, Shirley passed away on January 2, 2015 at the age of 89. Shirley was one
of 13 students in Temple’s charter graduating class. Her parents, Barney and Dorothy Lachman, were founding
members of Temple Israel in 1941. In 1982, Shirley was elected the 20th president of the congregation and the first
female president. She served Temple and the Jewish community in many capacities before and after her presidential
leadership. Shirley and her late husband, Nathan Fink, were awarded the Israel Prime Minister’s Medal for outstanding
service to the Israel Bond cause. Shirley is survived by three loving children, Melvin Fink, David Fink and Linda
(Rabbi Lane) Steinger. Her grandchildren include Shira Kahan, Zachary Fink, Alyssa Fedele, Daina and Andrew
Borteck, Ellery Fink and Tammie Visintainer, Rafi Steinger, Lauren Davies, and Noah Davies. Shirley is also
survived by her sister Joyce Morof and was predeceased by her brother Dr. Sheldon Lachman. Temple Israel extends
its sincere sympathy to her family and friends and sends our immense gratitude for her lengthy service, remarkable
compassion and groundbreaking leadership.

ACHIM - SPIRITUAL JOURNEY FOR MEN
Open to all men of Temple Israel • Sponsored by Brotherhood
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2015 • 6:30 – 8:30 PM
“A TOAST TO BROTHERHOOD” – One challenge of being a brother is envy. We
might think that our brother has better qualities and/or is held in higher esteem. This may
be something that we wish we had. However, this self-belief creates its own reality. Just as
honoring our brother for his qualities creates a closeness beyond compare. It is up to us to
choose the toast to our brotherhood by which we will live our own lives: admiration or envy.
ACHIM is a safe place for men to share meaningful thoughts and emotions and move toward
greater strength of character. We’ll meet and catch up with each other over a small meal. We’ll
sing/chant songs from the Jewish tradition. We’ll look for deeper meanings inside ourselves as
we find strength in our brotherhood. All men in the Jewish community are welcome to attend.
RSVP to John Shanteau at [email protected].

CHRISTMAS DAY – THANK YOU!
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who
gave their time on Christmas Day! Over 130
Temple Israel members volunteered throughout
the course of the day at three different sites,
as part of the community-wide Mitzvah Day.

IN REVIEW: HOUSING THE SOUTH OAKLAND SHELTER
Temple Israel would like to thank our dedicated volunteers who helped with this year’s project with the South Oakland Shelter. Your hard work,
energy and commitment to this cause truly made a difference in the lives of thirty men, women and children from the South Oakland Shelter.
We couldn’t have done it without all of our countless volunteers who donated their time and services.
A special thank you to our dedicated co-chairs, Art Dubin, Beth Kirschner and Jane Schelberg. Thank you for everything!!! You truly are the heart
of this mitzvah project! Many thanks to our fabulous committee: Mike Anspach, Janice Cherkasky, Rochelle Meyers, Marilyn Moss, Barbara
Rosenthal, Amy Wander and Gail Young for the outstanding job they did!
“Todah Rabah” to Temple’s wonderful affiliate groups: Sisterhood, Brotherhood, YFTI and JYFTI for their help and support. We’d also like to
thank Temple Israel’s Caring Community, Shoshana Rubenstein and JARC for their help and hard work!
Finally, to the many individuals and businesses who gave so much of their time and services to make this week a success – we thank you for your
continued support and generosity!
Special thanks to the Lauren & Phillip Fisher & Family, the Steven Gotlib Memorial Fund and the Susan & Hanley Yorke Social Action Fund.

B’NAI MITZVAH TUTORING CENTER
With pride and excitement Temple Israel dedicated the newly renovated B’nai Mitzvah Tutoring
Center on Tuesday, November 18th. Because of the kindness and generosity of Al and Debbie
Iwrey and in honor of Temple Israel’s long time instructor Carolyn Iwrey the center underwent
a complete renovation. The private rooms, a new small conference area and the large general
space sparkle with the fresh new colors, built-ins and furniture. Please take a moment to come
down to the basement to check out this beautiful space.
