Augmented reality opens the door for students to show much more than just a final
project! Aurasma (for iPad) scans a desired image (such as student project) and will play
a video (such as a narrative explanation, a song, a time-lapse of creation, etc.). It’s easier
than you think!

Description:
Many teachers attend professional development and chat, Tweet, discuss, and share
during the learning. We multitask and engage in the professional development on multiple
levels, utilizing technology and backchannels to process and develop new learning. We
share what we like, learn, and want to challenge. What if students had the same
experience in our classes? While many schools have adopted Google Apps for Education
and transformed their teachers’ instruction and students’ learning, few have embraced the
power of Google+ Communities.
This presentation will explore how Google+ Communities can be used to engage all
learners and build classroom community, which can then be leveraged to promote active
student centered learning, collaboration, and both 21st century and Common Core skills.
Through the use of Google+ Communities and GAFE, students are empowered in
authentic and new learning in classrooms and beyond. Class never ends after 41-minutes
and students learning, interaction, and growth never needs to end.

Conferencing with students in the Cloud and live in class, we’ve discovered that housing
formative student compositions in Google Drive engenders more dialogue, richer peer
feedback and high engagement. Tasks such as housing research notes, collaborating on
shared narratives, and reflecting on self-assessments help students to see writing as a
formative practice. Participants in this workshop will review and discuss abundant
examples of student work. They will also be provided with full digital access to our
presentation materials and invited to create a backchannel of questions and comments

GAFE Supports Common Core Writing Practices

Description:
Google Apps encourages modern Common Core style writing practices with many built in
features, i.e. the ability to collaborate, give and receive feedback via text comments, voice
comments and suggested edits, and to track revision history. In addition to these built-in
features, there is also a variety of third-party add-on tools, such as EasyBib bibliography
generator, thesaurus, and table of contents that will assist students’ writing and teacher
organization, therefore freeing up time to work with learners.

How to Teach Programming: The 9 Hours After Hour of Code

Description:
Hour of code has demonstrated that students can learn to program without teachers. But
teachers' help can dramatically improve learning outcomes. This presentation shows
what you need to know to manage an introductory sequence of programming lessons that
take students from knowing nothing to a knowledge of variables, if statements and loops.
You don't need to be a great programmer to teach programming, but if you know certain
key skills, you can be very effective. There are terrific tie-ins to common core math skills
as well.

Formative Assessment Data

The eIRLA is American Reading Company's web-based formative assessment tool. With
the eIRLA, teachers can find each student's reading level, monitor student progress
through the Common Core State Standards, and record evidence of student mastery
using embedded assessments. Daily formative assessment data from the eIRLA is
delivered to administrators and stakeholders in the form of dashboards and reports that
provide focus, and help drive instruction. With this real-time data, administrative
stakeholders can see the needs of their entire student population in aggregate, and easily
drill down to individual student histories.

Two Flipping Amazing Tools You Can Use Right Away!

Participants will learn two new powerful web tools that they can use to create a flipped
experience for students (or even for PD)! Blendspace, a multimedia unit creator, will be
demonstrated and various applications/suggestions for use will be discussed. EdPuzzle,
a relatively new tool for creating interactive experiences with videos, will also be
demonstrated for various uses and even audiences. (I'm using this tool for flipped
professional development!) The session will end with a 5-10 minute group backchannel
using Padlet so that participants can share their own ideas for uses of these two web
tools. (BYOD use required for backchannel participation)

Aside from saving trees and funding for ink and paper, there are great reasons for going
paperless in your classroom. We need to prepare our students to live and thrive in a
digital world. This workshop will look at BYOD and 1:1 environments that have
successfully integrated technology to the point where the tool is irrelevant in light of the
learning that takes place. Support for collaboration, organizational skills and digital
learning will be discussed. Best practices for online tools such as Google Apps, Evernote,
YouTube and an LMS (such as Edmodo or My Big Campus) will be explored.

Chromebooks are being used in classrooms across the country. Teachers and students
can use Google Drive, Google Plus, Chrome Web Apps, Google Sites, YouTube, Open
Educational Resources, and Assessments daily in the classroom for content delivery,
collaboration, creation, and discovery. This workshop will provide resources and
instructions for implementing Chromebooks in your classroom for both teachers and

Using Blogging to Prepare Students for PARCC

Description:
Kidblog will be used as a platform for the type of questions students will be exposed to in
the PARCC. Students can practice locating text evidence, technology skills and working
collaboratively when blogging. Sites and resources for mentor texts as well as examples
of blogging posts and responses will be offered to the teachers. Teachers will also have a
chance to set up their blogs and discuss the many ways they can structure them for their
own classroom.

Using Google Forms for Assessment

Description:
Google Forms allows teachers to gather information as well as deliver online
assessments, which is a strategy that is helpful when acclimating students to online
testing (PARCC.) When Google Forms is used as a formative assessment, instant
feedback is provided that informs your teaching. Using Google Forms for assessment also
provides opportunities for data-driven decision making. The data from the form is collected
into a Google spreadsheet where it can be organized and analyzed with features such as
“Show Summary of Responses.”

Utilizing and Managing BYOD In Your Classroom

Description:
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is gaining popularity in many schools as a way of
increasing access to vital technology. It acknowledges the reality that many students,
even those in relatively low-income communities, have ready access to educationallyvaluable technology that, until recently, they were forced to turn off when they entered the
school building. During this session we will discuss ways to utilize BYOD in your
classroom as well as how to manage students using their own devices. By the end of this
session you will have added some valuable tools to your toolbox on how to use BYOD,
and you will no longer fear seeing your students using their cellphones in your class.
