Supervisor It’s hard to believe a new year is upon us. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and that the New Year brings you continued health and happiness. Although we have been fairly lucky as far as the weather is concerned, please remember winter is not over. Anyone in need of a warming center is welcome to stop by the Township Monday-Friday 8:30am through 4:30pm. Please visit our website at www.waynetwp-il.org for a complete list of warming centers. This year’s Annual Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 7:30pm. Check in for the meeting will be at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held right here in the Senior Center. It is a great opportunity to connect with your township officials as well as ask any questions you might have regarding township government. The last item I want to mention is the Township Recycle Event. The date is not yet scheduled but will most likely be in late May or early June. Watch for flyers posted around the Township building or keep an eye on our website for a list of items to be collected. Start cleaning out your garage, basement, and closets! Tom Arends Wayne Township Supervisor ————————————————————— GENERAL ASSISTANCE DEPARTMENT 630-231-7173 Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015! Our programs made a difference in so many people’s lives throughout the year, but not without the help of all of you. Your continued support enables our programs to grow and help so many people in need in our communities. I am proud of working at Wayne Township and being a part of a great humanitarian team that includes our administration, our staff, but most importantly, our volunteers and donors. Thank you for your partnership in 2014. We will continue to need your support as we go forward in 2015, most of our clients are still unemployed and still struggling to make their rent or mortgage payments and keep food on the table. Wayne Township programs make a positive difference in people’s lives and we will continue to do that with your help. Where did your donations go? Thanks to your financial support we purchased 240 holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving & Christmas and distributed over 480 gift cards for children and seniors in our Christmas programs; we also distributed 98 backpacks with school supplies, 120 Easter baskets, distributed food and cleaning products to over 1,500 households and provided clothing and household items to over 600 households! Volunteer Appreciation We want to thank everyone who helps us out with our special projects throughout the year, your help is appreciated very much. We especially want to thank the following members of your Senior Department who help us out every month: John Haffey (Food Pantry), John Hugunin (SNAP Outreach), Richard Jendrycki (Food Pantry), Sharon Kowal (Clothes Closet), Michael Musson Sr. (Bread Pick Up), Joe Ohins (Food Pantry), and Doris Rada (Clothes Closet). Volunteers Needed We are looking for two volunteers to help sort food products and organize, set up our food pantry every Tuesday. The right volunteer must have good organization skills but be flexible enough to accommodate changes as needed. Please contact Juanita for additional information. Do you need help with utility bills or food? Please call us to discuss what programs are available for you, we will do an assessment over the phone and determine what programs are appropriate for your situation. We may be able to help you access benefits to alleviate some of the financial hardship you may be facing and also refer you to other services that may benefit your household. We have a volunteer on site every Wednesday between 10am and 2pm that can assist you in applying for SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps), appointments are not necessary but please bring your photo ID with you and allow at least 30 minutes for the application process. We also provide financial assistance for rent, utilities and prescriptions to eligible residents. Call our office for specific program guidelines. Juanita, Florence & Joffrey _____________________________________ What’s New in the Assessor’s Office Michael E. Musson, C.I.A.O. Wayne Township Assessor (630) 231-8900 fax: (630) 231-9534 e-mail: [email protected] Website address: www.waynetownshipassessor.com As we begin the new year, I want to remind you of the real estate tax exemptions available to Senior Citizens. Senior Exemption The Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption is available to residents who will be age 65 or older during the assessment year. New applicants should bring proof of age, such as a driver’s license or birth certificate, and proof of ownership, such as the deed or title policy for the property. For tax year 2014 (payable 2015), this exemption will reduce the assessment by $5,000 before the tax rate is applied. Senior Freeze Exemption Applications for the Senior Citizens’ Assessment Freeze Exemption for the 2015 tax bill, payable in 2016, will be available in April. Applications will be mailed to those who qualified for the exemption for 2014, and will be available in my office for new applicants. The application deadline is October 1, 2015. The Senior Freeze Exemption is available to senior citizens who will be 65 or older during 2015, who owned and occupied the property on January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2015, with a total 2014 household income of $55,000 or less. To apply, the senior must provide proof of age and ownership (see above) and complete an application itemizing his/her 2014 total household income. For assistance in completing the application, please bring your 2014 S.S.A.-1099 and U.S. 1040 forms, if applicable. Please call my office if you have any questions. As most applicants have noticed during the past several years, the amount of the Senior Freeze Exemptions has been shrinking each year as assessments have been reduced. Because the real estate market has improved during the past year, most assessments will begin increasing for the 2015 assessment year. Therefore, it is very important that all eligible seniors apply for the exemption for 2015, to ensure that their assessments are frozen at the 2014 level, and they will again begin receiving some relief due to this exemption. Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program This program, implemented by the DuPage County Treasurer, allows qualified Senior Citizens to defer their property taxes. The deferred taxes are borrowed against the property’s market value, and must be repaid with interest within one year of the sale of the property or the settlement of the estate. To qualify for the Tax Deferral Program for the 2014 tax bill, payable in 2015, an applicant must be age 65 or older by June 1, 2015, and have a Page 13 Announcements/Township Happenings Meet our Artists Each month we showcase an artist’s work on the walls of the Senior Center. Take time to look at the talent among us. In January we displayed the art work of Greg Chakos. If you are interested in displaying your artwork, please let us know. Wii Bowling Scores December 2014 total 2014 household income of $50,000 or less. An applicant must also have owned the property (or another qualifying property) for at least the last three years. The applicant must also have no delinquent property taxes or special assessments, and must provide proof of adequate insurance against fire and casualty loss. The application deadline for the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral is March 1, 2015. For more information regarding this program, and for application forms, please call the Treasurer at 630-407-5900, or visit http://www.dupageco.org/treasurer on the Internet. Reminder to Florida Property Owners If you own a second home in Florida and are receiving the Senior Citizens and/or Homestead Exemptions on that property, please contact my office to verify that you are not receiving them on your Illinois property, or to request that they be removed. If the Florida taxing authorities discover property owners receiving exemptions on multiple properties, they will remove the Florida exemptions, and seek back taxes for previous years. To keep you healthy, please take advantage of Medicare’s preventive services which include flu & hepatitis B vaccinations; screenings for colorectal, breast, & prostate cancer & cardiovascular disease; screening & counseling for diabetes & depression; & counseling to help you quit smoking or for alcohol abuse. Medicare now offers an annual “wellness” visit with your doctor to help develop a preventative plan to prevent disease or disability based on your health & risk factors. Medicare continues to shrink the “donut hole,” or coverage gap. In 2015, if you do enter into the coverage gap, you pay 65% of the plan’s cost for generic drugs & 45% of the plan’s cost for covered brand-name drugs. Finally, if you are computer savvy, your MyMedicare.gov website offers a Blue Button which allows you to download your past 12-36 months of claims information for Part A & B, & 12 months of claims information for Part D. This information can help you & your doctor make more informed decision about your health. Please contact the center if you need an appointment for any of your Medicare needs. We wish you a Happy Healthy New Year & hope you stay out of the “donut hole!” SUDOKU 9 8 7 3 4 9 1 1 2 7 1 9 4 3 3 6 5 2 7 8 1 Answer Key 1 9 6 4 7 8 5 2 2 7 5 1 4 3 9 8 4 3 7 6 2 1 7 6 8 3 2 1 4 3 1 2 6 9 5 8 9 5 4 8 3 6 7 4 3 7 5 1 9 2 3 5 2 1 9 8 7 6 7 5 4 3 6 8 9 2 6 9 5 4 1 8 3 8 5 9 7 2 6 4 1 We are born (our par ents take car e of us). We live (we take car e of our selves). Our last days (someone else takes car e of us). Most seniors do not prepare for “end of life.” We think that our life will end in the comfort of our home. Most of us will develop something that will require hospitalization, then rehab, then assisted living. We end up in a strange place with care givers that we don’t know. Whether we like it or not, we are all going to need “End of life” care. If you want to contr ol your end of life you must act now.
