Chapel of Rest…Another Caldwell County Treasure
The Chapel of Rest is a beautifully restored Episcopal Church in Happy Valley. It is no longer used for regular services but is open daily during daylight
hours for self-guided tours. It has been
the home of a spring and fall classical
music series since 1984. Seasonal music also is a highlight of the Chapel’s
nondenominational Thanksgiving Eve
and Christmas Eve services. Originally
serving the Patterson School, the
Chapel was used until 1921 when services were moved to the Patterson
School campus. Burials in the Chapel’s
cemetery began around 1856, and include noted North Carolina General
Collett Leventhorpe, who served during the Civil War.
The Chapel, built in 1887, is in the heart of Happy Valley. It is situated on a knoll and is reminiscent of a
more simple life when locals lined the pews in their Sunday best clothing. Travelers who stop in for a
rest along the Scenic Byway will find the chapel as peaceful today as those did who visited many years
ago. “Elder generations recall their days of youth, looking up in wonder from the wooden benches listening to voices of worship rising to the rafters, with the Gothic Revival roof-line above them.” The Chapel
of Rest Preservation Society was created in 1984 to preserve the historical integrity of the Chapel of Rest
and maintain the building and grounds. Continued on page 3...

Mysterious Loud Booms
Have you heard any loud booms lately? Well, this past Saturday night (01/24/2015) there were many
reports of loud booms in the southern end of Caldwell County. We heard many stories stating that the
booms may have been caused by cannons, tannerite, shifting tectonic plates, shot guns, sonic booms,
military experiments, etc. Reports of residents hearing these booms have come from Longview, Dudley
Shoals, Granite Falls, Sawmills and Hudson. Many people have stated that they have been hearing loud
booms around Caldwell County for the last month or so.
Here is an explanation from the USGS concerning “Boom’s”…
Earthquake "booms" have been reported for a long time, and they tend to occur more in the Northeastern US and along the East Coast. Of course, most "booms" that people hear or experience are actually
some type of cultural noise, such as some type of explosion, a large vehicle going by, or sometimes a
sonic boom, but there have been many reports of "booms" that cannot be explained by man-made
sources. No one knows for sure, but scientists speculate that these "booms" are probably small shallow
earthquakes that are too small to be recorded, but large enough to be felt by people nearby.
As it turns out....there are many factors that contribute to the "sound' that an earthquake makes.
To begin to understand these factors we have to
understand the different types of waves, the speed
they travel through the earth, and the speed that
sound travels through the air.
Perhaps the best way to understand earthquake
sounds, are from an actual experiment that took
place back in the 80's in California by David Hill.
Dr. Hill's team recorded sounds that came out of
the earth (from nearby small earthquakes between
magnitude 2.0 and 3.0) and simultaneously measured the arrival of the P wave on a seismograph.
Researchers also reported hearing a sound before
the S waves were recorded; this turned out to be
the arrival of the P wave. See this Alaska Science
Forum article entitled "Earthquake Waves Outrace Sound" for a description of that experiment.
Source: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/booms.php
The USGS does have an interesting explanation of Earthquake Booms, Seneca Guns, and Other Sounds
on their website. Here is the link: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/booms.php
We can probably rule out tectonic plates shifting…”There are no tectonic plate boundaries near the east
coast. The nearest plate boundaries are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea.”
U.S. Geological Survey
The internet is full of explanations about loud booms but we prefer to rely on credible sources for information concerning this.
This would be a great topic for a science teacher to look into.
So, until we hear something official the most likely cause of these booms can be attributed to someone
using explosives, sonic booms or small shallow earthquakes. It could be as simple as someone using
explosives such as tannerite and getting a laugh about the “Mysterious Loud Booms.”

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health
Take Care Of Your Amazing Liver
In ancient Babylon it was the liver and not the heart which was esteemed as the seat of the soul. In certain parts of Africa they say “My liver feels for you.” The ancient Egyptians took special care of the liver
when mummifying bodies. The Etruscans would study livers of animals to assess omens and guidance
from their gods.
This fantastic and complex organ performs the true miracles of converting our food into living energy
and the elements for sustaining life. The human system is a scientific marvel often compared to a machine; e.g. the steadfast pump of the heart, the remarkable bio-computer brain, the electrical system of
the nerves. So subtle and versatile is the liver that it defies a machine-like analogy, but rather might be
compared to an entire city for the variety of its activities. It is one of the body’s most vital organs.
The largest of the internal organs the liver “weighs in” at 2.5 to 3 pounds. It is suspended behind the
ribs on the upper right side of the abdomen and spans almost the entire width of the body. It has two
separate lobes which operate independently of each other (in case one side stops functioning) and is
made up of about 50,000 tiny lobules (little liver units). One unique feature of the liver is that it is capable of regenerating itself after a portion is removed. After a loss of up to 75% due to injury or surgery
the remaining liver can grow back and be restored to normal size within several months.
The liver receives blood directly from the stomach, pancreas and intestine via the portal vein. The liver
with its dazzlingly intricate labyrinth of special cells, veins and ducts receives this nutrient rich blood
and filters out the nutrients taking them into its own cells to be processed. The liver also receives
freshly oxygenated blood via a different artery from which it takes its oxygen supply. It filters out
wastes and other poisons and converts them into substances which can be safely carried out of the
body. The liver filters more than a quart of blood each minute.
The liver is the organ that is responsible for processing, converting, distributing and maintaining the
body’s fuel supply. It converts the complex energy foods we eat (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) into
simple glucose (blood sugar) or stores this fuel as glycogen. It breaks down and converts fat for distribution and storage.
The liver is responsible for dismantling proteins into amino acids, assembling proteins and making new
amino acids for use throughout the body. It breaks down old blood cells and recycles the iron.
The liver also makes bile, a yellowish-green alkaline liquid which is stored in the gall bladder and secreted into the small intestine to help break down fats. Bile contains the pigments which give color to
urine and feces. When the bile ducts are obstructed it is the bile pigments which can cause the body to
turn jaundice or yellow.
Add to the list of liver functions the production of many different hormones and proteins which affect
the way the body grows and heals. Many vitamins and other nutrients like iron are stored in the liver
and released when needed. Poisons such as alcohol and drugs are detoxified in the liver.
As we can see, this organ is vital for many reasons. No one has ever devised an artificial liver because it
is so complex. Second only to the brain in complexity, the liver is the home to the many of the mysteries of life. As powerful as this organ is, it is also delicate and may fall prey to disease. The following
paragraphs will briefly describe some of the common diseases of the liver.

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health
Take Care Of Your Amazing Liver
Hepatitis literally means an inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by either alcohol, viruses or
drugs. One type of viral hepatitis, hepatitis A (also called infectious hepatitis) is transmitted usually
through food and is more common where sanitation and hygiene are poor. The other type, hepatitis B
is a virus spread via exchange of blood (it is also known as serum hepatitis). Today’s blood supplies are
thoroughly checked for the hepatitis B virus. In most cases viral hepatitis clears up naturally with bed
rest and light diet. As with other viral infections, there isn’t any medical treatment.
Alcohol can damage the liver even in moderate quantities. Alcohol is a concentrated sugar which
causes fat to be deposited in the liver. For those who drink only occasionally, the damage is temporary
and the liver can usually “bounce back” to normal after several days of rest and clean living. Those who
drink more often don’t give the liver a chance to recuperate from the alcohol poisoning and more serious damage to the liver can result. In some cases alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis.
As mentioned before, the liver is one organ which has the amazing ability to regenerate itself. Cirrhosis
is a condition in which a liver damaged by disease or alcohol doesn’t grow back “good as new.” In cirrhosis, the liver forms fibrous scar tissue and lumpy irregular nodules as it regenerates. In advanced
cases, the liver becomes so badly scarred by cirrhosis that it can no longer do its work and the afflicted
person dies of liver failure.
“What are good things to do for the liver?” Following the general rules for a healthy body does wonders
for your liver as all the organs share the benefits of loving your body. These general guidelines, as far as
this author is concerned, can’t be stressed enough: natural diet (plenty of fresh vegetables, whole
grains, fresh fruit, low fat, high fiber and don’t overeat), exercise, clean air (if you smoke, quit), clean
and sufficient drinking water (coffee or sugar drinks like soda are no substitute for just plain water),
proper rest and relaxation, positive attitude (it is an established fact that those who are happy are
healthier), loving relationships and good communication. These general guidelines when integrated
into our habits will give greater joy and vibrancy to our lives and our livers.
Many natural health experts will treat liver troubles with cleansing and rest. The wisdom of fasting to
treat a clogged or overworked liver is prevalent in many of these circles. Some natural healers recommend a diet of only apples, only stewed tomatoes, or some other special food, and then follow with a
special concoction (usually a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and cayenne) to facilitate a liver
“flush” to release stored toxins.
There are herbs which are used to strengthen, sooth, energize, cleanse and revitalize the liver. By far
the most popular is Dandelion Root. This is certainly an easy to find herb, but if you plan to harvest
your own, be sure to find a field that has not been sprayed with weed killers or pesticides. Taken as a
tea or tincture, this herb has properties that invigorate liver functions, stimulate the purification of
blood and help with the removal of toxins.
Although the spice Rosemary is toxic in large quantities, in small doses it has been found to be very
stimulating to the liver, other digestive organs, and the circulation.

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health
Take Care Of Your Amazing Liver
Licorice Root, also known as “The Great Detoxifier,” may reduce accumulation of fatty acids called
triglycerides in the liver, and increase stored simple sugars called glycogen. It can be of help in improving the general health and healing of the liver.
Garlic, the healing hero has forged its way into everyone’s natural “medicine chest.” It should come as
no surprise that it is also a good liver tonic. In addition to providing some good nutrients, the use of
garlic will help with bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Garlic helps with circulation and digestion
and is very effective in preventing and treating several liver disorders.
Yellow Dock is a powerful health giving herb for the liver and the blood. Some other popular herbs
for the liver are Cascara Sagrada, Club Moss, Gentian and Black Cohosh.
Perhaps it’s not often enough that we acknowledge the splendor of the living being and the utterly
breath-taking intricacy of its workings. The liver is an energy company in the body, building supply
manufacturer and warehouse, housekeeper, poison control center and much more. The liver does
much to maintain this marvelous chapel which is our body.
Vitamins
Our 60 trillion cells continuously undergo chemical reactions. Vitamins give them life and vitality, turn
food into energy, abets growth and strength and provides disease prevention. A person only needs a
teaspoonful of vitamins per day, but since our bodies can’t produce vitamins on their own, we must obtain them from food.
All natural foods contain vitamins but they are destroyed through processing and cooking. Cutting and
chopping food into small pieces, even washing it, causes vitamin loss.
Vitamins differ greatly in stability. Vitamin B1 and folic acid are easily destroyed by air, heat, acid and
metals, and readily dissolves in water. Even when rinds of certain fruits and vegetables are scratched
or peeled, they lose a great amount of vitamin C.
Vitamin B1 dissolves in water and is easily affected by temperature and contact with metals, alkali, and
oxygen. Although vitamin B2 is less sensitive to heat, it is vulnerable to light and can be lost in water
during cooking.
Fat-soluble vitamins are more stable than water-soluble ones, but can easily be destroyed by high temperatures or contact with oxygen.
Vitamins are destroyed in great quantity during the storage process, in both warm and cold conditions.
Asparagus, for example, loses 50% of its vitamin C at 32F, and 90% at 70F. Chinese cabbage loses all
its vitamin C in just a few days. Vitamin B1 in a humid place easily loses its potency. This is why
there’s no benefit to buying fruit and vegetables in bulk at a discount. To reduce vitamin loss, buy small
quantities as fresh and as frequently as possible. Store them in a dark place without airflow. Don’t
soak them in water but wash quickly.

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health
Vitamins
When we endure stress, we quickly consume our vitamin stores, especially such antioxidants as vitamins A, C, and E. A lack of sufficient vitamins weakens the immune system and causes insomnia, loss
of appetite, over-sensitivity, and fatigue. These symptoms can occur long before the development of
vitamin deficiency diseases, such as scurvy (vitamin C deficiency), and beriberi (vitamin B1 deficiency).
Each vitamin has its unique deficiency symptoms, but vitamins also have relationships with each other.
Missing or lacking only one can cause physical imbalances.
People try to obtain vitamins through supplements, but artificially synthesized vitamin products aren’t
as effective because of their low absorption rate. In addition, excessive vitamins at one time are lost
through the body’s waste systems (urine and feces). This is why it’s absolutely best to obtain vitamins
through meals of raw, natural, organic food.
Seeds
Studies have shown that seeds are good to prevent some of the serious diseases and problems that
mankind has.
At New York University of Medicine, mice were injected with cancer cells. Some mice were fed seeds
and some were not. The mice that were not given the seeds rapidly got cancer. The mice that ate the
seeds; the enzymes in the seeds prevented them from getting cancer.
Heart disease is the number one disease and experiments have shown that eating seeds improved heart
conditions by lowering blood serum cholesterol and fatty plague on the artery walls of the heart.
Seeds helped circulation to brains that were clogged with clumps of thick blood and bacteria caused
from eating animal. Animal protein is dead food.
Studies have shown seeds to improve eye functions. Seeds should be about one half of our protein intake and only eaten in the morning. Remember beans are seeds too.
Seeds have life in them enjoy pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds.

NASA’s Dawn Spacecraft Captures Best-Ever View of Dwarf Planet
By NASA…NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has returned the sharpest images ever seen of the dwarf planet Ce-
res. The images were taken 147,000 miles (237,000 kilometers) from Ceres on Jan. 25, and represent a
new milestone for a spacecraft that soon will become the first human-made probe to visit a dwarf
planet.
"We know so little about our vast solar system, but thanks to economical missions like Dawn, those
mysteries are being solved," said Jim Green, Planetary Science Division Director at NASA Headquarters
in Washington.
At 43 pixels wide, the new images are more than 30 percent higher in resolution than those taken by
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 2003 and 2004 at a distance of over 150 million miles. The resolution is higher because Dawn is traveling
through the solar system to Ceres, while
Hubble remains fixed in Earth orbit. The new
Dawn images come on the heels of initial
navigation images taken Jan. 13 that reveal a
white spot on the dwarf planet and the suggestion of craters. Hubble images also had
glimpsed a white spot on the dwarf planet,
but its nature is still unknown.
"Ceres is a 'planet' that you've probably
never heard of,” said Robert Mase, Dawn
project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.
“We're excited to learn all about it with Dawn
and share our discoveries with the world."
As the spacecraft gets closer to Ceres, its
camera will return even better images. On
March 6, Dawn will enter into orbit around
Ceres to capture detailed images and measure variations in light reflected from Ceres,
which should reveal the planet’s surface composition.
"We are already seeing areas and details on
Ceres popping out that had not been seen before. For instance, there are several dark features in the
southern hemisphere that might be craters within a region that is darker overall," said Carol Raymond,
deputy principal investigator of the Dawn mission at JPL. "Data from this mission will revolutionize our
understanding of this unique body. Ceres is showing us tantalizing features that are whetting our appetite for the detailed exploration to come."
Ceres, the largest body between Mars and Jupiter in the main asteroid belt, has a diameter of about 590
miles (950 kilometers). Some scientists believe the dwarf planet harbored a subsurface ocean in the past
and liquid water may still be lurking under its icy mantle.
Originally described as a planet, Ceres was later categorized as an asteroid, and then reclassified as a
dwarf planet in 2006. The mysterious world was discovered in 1801 by astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi,
who named the object for the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships.
“You may not realize that the word ‘cereal’ comes from the name Ceres. Perhaps you already connected
with the dwarf planet at breakfast today," said JPL's Marc Rayman, Mission Director and Chief Engineer of the Dawn mission. Continued of page 17...

Powered by a uniquely capable ion propulsion system, Dawn also orbited and explored Vesta, the
second most massive body in the asteroid belt.
From 2011 to 2012, Dawn returned more than
30,000 images, 18 million light measurements and
other scientific data about the impressive large asteroid. Vesta has a diameter of about 326 miles
(525 kilometers).
"With the help of Dawn and other missions, we are
continually adding to our understanding of how
the solar system began and how the planets were
formed,” said Chris Russell, principal investigator
for the Dawn mission, based at the University of
California, Los Angeles.
Dawn's mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by
JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's
Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall
Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA
is responsible for overall Dawn mission science.
Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Virginia, designed
and built the spacecraft. JPL is managed for NASA
by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
The framing cameras were provided by the Max
Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany, with significant contributions by
the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of
Planetary Research in Berlin, and in coordination
with the Institute of Computer and Communication Network Engineering in Braunschweig.
The visible and infrared mapping spectrometer
was provided by the Italian Space Agency and the
Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, was
built by Selex ES, and is managed by Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics and Planetology in
Rome. The gamma ray and neutron detector was
built by Los Alamos National Laboratory in New
Mexico, and is operated by the Planetary Science
Institute of Tucson, Arizona.

Wildlife Commission Schedules
Second Public Meeting on Proposed
Linville Shooting Range
By the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission …
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hold
a second informational meeting on Feb. 18, in
Morganton, to discuss constructing a shooting
range on the Linville Tract of the Pisgah Game
Land in Burke County. The meeting is scheduled
from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and will be held at Municipal
Auditorium located at 401 S. College Street. The
proposed site for the range is near the intersection
of N.C. 126 and Wolf Pit Road, north of Lake
James, in Burke County. Plans for the range include a 25-yard pistol range and a 100-yard rifle
range. Commission staff will present another overview of the proposed shooting range and discuss
additional sound studies that have been performed
since the first meeting, which was held on June 16,
2014, in Marion. The Commission will hear public
comments on the proposed shooting range at the
conclusion of the overview and sound study discussion. Following the meeting, Commission staff will
present the project, along with public comments,
to the Wildlife Commissioners for their consideration at the March 5 business meeting. The proposed range is part of an initiative by the Wildlife
Commission to develop and enhance public shooting facilities across the state. For more information
about shooting ranges in North Carolina, as well as

The Good Word
from the Bible
...a weekly
Inspirational Message
for today’s life-styles...
Deuteronomy 30:15 “See, I have set before
thee this day life and good, and death and
evil.”
You think, “Well, anyone with any common
sense would choose life and good.” You
would think so, but that is not the case. The
majority will go for death and evil. Wide is
the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to
destruction, and many there be which go in
there at: Because straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and
few there be that find it. The word straight
means to die to self, let Jesus guide you, and
follow Him. Any person who will be saved
must deny himself and take up his cross and
follow Jesus. For whosoever will save his life
shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life
for Jesus sake shall find it. For what is a person profited if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul? Or what shall a person
give in exchange for his soul? God sets before
us the way of life and the way of death. Jesus
is the way of life. If you want to live, come to
Jesus. Jesus died for you. You can choose
life, you do not have to die. If Jesus had not
died in your place, you would have no choice
but to die. Jesus came forth victorious over
death. Go with Jesus, life and good instead of
death and evil.

Thieves file phony tax returns
By the NCDOJ...Tax return identity theft
happens when thieves use your Social Security
Number to file tax returns and claim a large
refund. You discover the fraud when you file your
own tax return and the Internal Revenue Service
says they’ve already processed a return using your
name and number.
Avoiding tax return ID theft starts by protecting
your confidential information. Don’t carry your
Social Security Number in your wallet or purse
unless you need it with you for an appointment
that day. Don’t leave your SSN where someone can
steal it, and shred unneeded documents that
include it. Another way to try to beat these thieves
is to get your tax return filed as soon as possible.
Don’t let the thieves jump in line ahead of you.
If you get a letter from the IRS stating that they
already processed your return, contact their
Identity Protection Specialized Unit immediately at
1-800-908-4490. In most cases, taxpayers are able
to work with the IRS to straighten out their tax
returns and, eventually, get their refund.
For more about how to prepare and file your tax
forms safely, see our tax time tips and other useful
information at www.ncdoj.gov.

Perseverance
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up
again.” (Proverbs 24:16a)
Perseverance; (1828 Webster’s) to persist and continue in a state of grace. To never abandon what is
undertaken to accomplish execution of purpose.
Perseverance truths:
A true believer gets back up after failure or falling.Lot
failed God in Sodom, but we read in (2 Peter 2:7) that
he had a righteous Soul; he got back up!
A persevering believer cannot remain astray from the
sheepfold. In (Luke 15) we read of the wasteful son
who finally came to himself and returned to the Father’s house. He returned broken, filthy and penniless; but he did return! Relationship demanded it.
A persevering believer will produce some quality fruit.
Fruit is evidence of one root system where they receive nourishment. Jesus mentioned fruit bearing
from his own no less than 6 times in (John 15).
A persevering child continues in the Faith. Those who
do so will be presented Holy, unblamable and unreprovable in God’s sight. (Colossians 1:22-23)
The persevering ones have no regrets at dying time. (2
Timothy 4:6-7)
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my
departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course I have kept the faith.”
C.H. Spurgeon said, “That by perseverance the two
snails boarded the ark.”
Remember; keeping us is God’s concern, perseverance is our concern.
Remain faithful.
We invite you to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
