Boca Raton Garden Club Newsletter 1. February President’s Message Sadly, we must say farewell to Past President, Outstanding Leader and Friend to many, Carol Brown. When she passed away in late December, she left a void that will not be filled easily. Her family has requested in her obituary that donations be made to the Boca Raton Garden Club Scholarship Fund. Also the Garden Club wishes to place a bench in the garden in her name and so donations may be made for that purchase up to Feb. 15. Donation checks should be made out to Boca Raton Garden Club and specify if the donation is for a Bench or Scholarship. The checks may be brought to the February meeting or mailed to Anne Lise Gerke, 386 NW 42nd St, Boca Raton, 33431-4636 February 3 General Meeting Everglades Restoration /Water Conservation February 10 Floral Arts 9:30 Speaking of donations, at our January meeting we collected $158.00 to give to FFGC toward coral reef restoration! Congratulations to us! We are going to maintain an email list of non-members of the Garden Club who wish to be notified of the availability of ornaments, the date of our Holiday House, and the date of our Treasures and plant sale. If you have any friends or neighbors who wish to be put on this list, please provide their name and email to me at [email protected] Hopefully this will help save some paper and will provide information to people who we might otherwise forget to notify. Board Meeting Congratulations and thank you to Sylvia Marks Newman and Susan Stizza for a very successful luncheon and fashion show. The menu was absolutely delightful, with extra touches that made it worthy of high praise. The clothing was stylish and there was enough variety to suit every taste and the models were beautiful (and familiar!). The decorations were creative and very attractive. I have to note that many of the ladies appreciated all the extra effort put into using the clubs china, cloth napkins and tablecloths. I know it takes time to clean these items but it shows we have class at the Boca Raton Garden Club and care about saving our environment by not using all the plastic. February 28 A good time was had by all. Fantastic job to you and your many helpers . Fifties Night Coming soon – Fifties Night – An evening you won’t want to miss! Dorinda Bagwell and Mary Kaub, co-chairs Unsolicitated Landscape Design Award Deadline March 1st The deadline is just around the corner for nominating those beautiful landscapes in and around your neighborhood. Please take pictures, fill out the brief form (available on the District X website) and send back to Mary Kaub at [email protected]. The two main criteria for this award are that the landscape is easily seen from the street and has been planted for at least one year. If you have and questions please feel free to contact me at 561-719-4168. Mary Kaub, District X committee chairperson 2 Whispering Pines Garden Club This year there are 42 members, grades 3rd -5th in the Whispering Pines Garden Club. Thanks to the support of the Boca Raton Garden Club under the guidance and leadership of Dellie Krebs, Mary Kaub, and Rebecca Stallard the kids are having a great time learning about plants and how to care for them. At our first meeting we learned garden tools safety, weeded and mulched our Friendship and Tolerance Garden, a 9-11 memorial site recognized by the U.S. Forestry Dept. Living Memorial Project. Our next class was very busy. Members fixed up the raised garden by cleaning it out, adding soil and sod. Then they planted vegetables and herbs that they brought. Finally they planted caladium bulbs in pots. Garden club members learned what a bulb is and how to care for them. The caladium was taken home and will be cared for by the students and then put on display at our end of the year flower show. During a fall meeting everyone had fun making a Halloween diorama out of shoe and cereal boxes. They decorated their boxes with tissue paper pumpkins filled with birdseed (to feed the birds when Halloween is over), a scarecrow, and other Halloween characters. Lastly, they added straw on the bottom of the box. The students were very creative in their designs. In December the group made reindeers and snowmen, along with Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl pictures. Gardener coordinator is Dellie Krebs, BRGC liaison is JoAnn Guise, WP Garden Club sponsor is BJ Saul (also a gardenclub member) Thank you to the BRGC for your support of the Whispering Pines Jr. Garden Club. 3 Do You Know the Best Vitamin to be a good Garden Club Member? B-1 Most of you already know that last year The Boca Raton Garden Club received the FFGC AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR A CLUB. We did not accomplish this by just putting on wonderful luncheons. This Award was judged on the following: Service to the community, Community Gardens, Garden Therapy projects. Educational projects: Conservation, Horticulture, Flower shows, and Youth GC Involvement in Federation projects: Attendance at District Meetings, Convention, Schools and Short Courses Participation: Arbor Day, National Garden Week, And Applying for awards. Contributions to: Wekiva Youth Camp, Penny Pines, Coral Reef Restoration Project and headquarters. As you can see Member involvement is necessary to really be this Number one club. As a member of District Ten & the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, it is Important that we all get involved in our community. We can be ambassadors here to lead others by our good examples. Let’s no longer take the easy way. Encourage our friends and neighbors to stop using bottled water, get a good filter, or at least recycle. Stop using Styrofoam, & plastic utensils. Take a stand on environmental issues, After signing an application to sponsor a new Garden Club Member your job does not stop there. Be a Mentor, you can develop lifelong friendships. Introduce them to other members, make them feel welcome. Call and Invite them to meetings. Explain the importance of being involved. Being a member is not just attending meetings, to listen to the speaker, hearing about upcoming events, waiting and wondering “When do we get to go to the refreshment table”? Did you know that Each member of This GC is expected to serve on one or more Committees during the fiscal year. Thant does not mean attend. As you know it is usually the same members that volunteer. Maybe the others need to be asked to help. They may not really understand what is involved. Many times as I chaired events I found it was just easier to do it myself. WRONG! This leads to Burn-Out, this also lessens the opportunity to allow others to Share their ideas and Share in the Fun. Yes! It can be Fun and not just Work when more are involved. Consider fewer fund raisers and concentrate on making those the very Best they can be. Don’t take the easy way out. We need to be more involved with our Youth. I know many of you already raised your kids but, maybe there is still something you can do to help: Share your ideas with youth leaders, Help with supplies, saving egg cartons, jars, magazines, pinecones. Invite our youth leaders to share the 4 projects the kids have worked on, Show & Tell, at our meetings. Invite a child to a club meeting so they can share their Wekiva Youth Camp experience, these are priceless. A good district member supports other clubs events and activities. These club activities are posted on our District Website. Consider carpooling. Boca to Vero Beach is only a 2 hour drive. Remember, It’s your time, it is what you make of it, don’t waste it, take it all in, making memories and friendship to last a life time. “Gardens are for Sharing” Emilie Palmieri Below: More activities from Whispering Pines--Gardens are for sharing! 5 Collect Stamps! Her contributions to this section of the newsletter were enormous and can never be replaced. In her honor, we are using her obituary as our "spotlight" for this month. Carol L. (Andrews) Brown, born in Shamokin, Oct. 24, 1960, passed from this life to join the rest of the angels Friday, Dec. 26, 2014.Carol attended St. Stanislaus Grade School and Lourdes Regional High School. She then went on to earn her degree in journalism at Pennsylvania State University, where she worked at the school's paper, The Daily Collegian. Because of her excellent writing skills, she quickly landed a job at The Home News, based in New Brunswick, N.J. She covered local news and had many front page articles. Being ever ambitious, she also took a part-time job at AT&T. Due to her outgoing personality, she was an immediate hit in customer service. Her superiors were so impressed by her intelligence that they gave her one of the first IBM personal computers ever produced. From there, she moved quickly through the ranks until she retired as head of sales for Siemens, supporting her customer MCI. Retirement did not slow Carol down in any way. She soon joined the Boca Raton Garden Club and was elected to chair its horticulture committee. She wanted to learn as much about gardening as possible, but also to spread that passion to others. She had an extensive garden and would always do "show and tells" about a new plant she had cultivated. Some were very rare and fellow horticulturists — both amateurs as well as professionals — commended her on her green thumb. Again, as Carol always did in life, she quickly rose to the top as the president of the Boca Raton Garden Club. Under her leadership, the 60-year-old club not only won the best club in Florida for the first time, but also the best club in the Deep South region, which included six neighboring states. She also won the FFGC Leadership Award for the state of Florida. Over the course of two flower shows, she won nearly 100 ribbons for her specimen plants. Through her tireless efforts, she managed to reinvigorate the club, adding many new members and completely remodeling the club house itself, both inside and out. Carol resided in Boca Raton, Fla. for the last 25 years with her beloved husband, Bruce Brown. They were married in St. Michael Church in 1984 where she was given away by her late father, Frank (Fritz) Andrews. She is also survived by her mother, Arlene Andrews, of Coal Township; her brothers, Mark Andrews and his wife, Mary Beth, of Fairfax Station, Va., and Fritz Andrews and his wife, Dottie, of Lorton, Va.; and her brother-in-law Paul Brown and his wife, Katherine. She also had eight nieces and nephews that she loved dearly, Jennifer (Andrews) Flynn, Alison (Andrews) Wolfe, Kathy Andrews (her goddaughter), Robyn Andrews (her goddaughter), Elizabeth Brown, Margaret Brown, Stephen Andrews and Kevin Andrews. She was a remarkably talented woman who was smart, engaging and the love of our lives. 8 February Birthdays Beth Frost 2/4 Patty Muom 2/4 Marsha McGovney 2/18 Violet Simon 2/20 Welcome New Member 1.
