opportunity to become INFORMED AND INVOLVED!!
The registration form can be found at
http://ffgc.org/education/tropical_short_course.html.
The Secret Garden Tour will be held on Saturday, February 21st.
Needless to say – this is our major fundraiser of the year and will
require the participation of all FGLC members to staff the houses on
the tour. It will involve working either an AM or PM shift; however,
there will still be time for you to view the other homes on the tour
either before or after your shift. Without your support this fundraiser
could not be successful. My thanks to the Secret Garden Chairman,
Sandy Lynch for her efforts in making this tour such a “hot ticket” in
South Florida.
On another note – District XI (our district) and District XII are cohosting the 2015 FFGC Convention (Rhythm of the Tropics) in Boca
Raton, Florida on April 17-19, 2015. FLGC’s Past President Rebecca
Schuberth is Chairman for the Convention. Many volunteers will be
needed for the convention. All members are encouraged to attend the
Convention (registration forms are on the internet www.ffgc.org). If
you do not wish to attend the entire convention, you can attend
individual days. This is the first time we have had a convention in our
area for over 10 years – so let’s have a great showing from our small
district here in South Florida. Another opportunity to get INFORMED - lots of great speakers!!
Hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends.
Tamara Pope, FLGC President

Page 3 Green Thumb Here’s the “Dirt” on our
Fabulous Young Gardeners!
The BFF Intermediates group (“Best Friends Forever”)
The group consists of 7 girls in grades 7, 8 and 9, our Parent leader, two very involved Parent
helpers, an FLGC liaison (in training!) and our FLGC Youth Garden Chairman.
The BFFs met in November at our Garden Center and started the year learning about and
growing micro greens and hydroponics under the direction of Rowena Gerber, Parkinsonia
Circle. The girls ate the greens as they grew at different stages and heights and they found in
the early days of growth, more intense minerals and stronger tastes.
They are keeping a
journal on the progress of the greens.
The BFF’s were introduced to the goals for the year and are working on different Award
Projects. They did community service by helping with the FLGC Plant Sale. They learned names
of plants, talked with the customers and carried plants to cars along with cleaning up a bit.
December was a field trip to the Lighthouse for the Blind.
The Sensory Garden which is
maintained by the FLGC Garden Circles, was explained and the girls walked with their eyes
closed to feel the mosaic wall and then “feel” and “smell” the herbs that are planted. The
“Tree of Sound” was of interest also. It was explained that if you can’t see then your other
senses take over and we have provided the garden for that reason. They learned about drying
herbs and leaves to make sachets. Then the BFFs made over 60 sachets for clients and staff of
the Lighthouse. The girls were very proud to be helping people who couldn’t see. The girls also
made and decorated over 60 swags of pine and cinnamon to give as gifts at the Lighthouse and
the Executive Director, Elly du Pre, was very excited and surprised with the gifts. The pine and
cinnamon will make the homes festive for the holidays.
This Team leader went home
afterwards for a nap. Later on I received a text message from a member of the group saying
how wonderful she felt after her experience yesterday. Makes it all worthwhile and here’s to
future FLGC members!!

In January our Youth Gardening Program will be underway in the schools!
The BFF’s and
volunteer FLGC members will help with soil and plants in preparation for the school programs!
Lessons on growing seeds and plants will take place with groups from Harbordale, Floranada,
and Virginia Shuman Young Elementary Schools, 4-H, and Little Schoolhouse. There will be Inhouse flower shows in March and camperships to Camp Wekiva will be awarded based on
participation in all facets of the youth program.
Thanks to help from our advisor and teacher, Jackie Schoettle, teachers Rowena Gerber, Beatriz
Bofill and Joy Litton, 4-H Bonny Hadjucko and FLGC Liaison to BFFs Bonny Cole, our youth
program is up and running.

Page 4 Green Thumb Parkinsonia Garden Circle Donates Birdbath to Boys & Girls Club
by Maggie Dunn
In support of our commitment to youth gardening and community outreach, the Parkinsonia Garden Circle
donated the funds to purchase and permanently install a birdbath in the garden at the Boys & Girls Club - Nan
Knox Unit. This donation of a water source completed the requirements for the garden at the club to become
eligible for certification as both a Naturescape Broward Florida Friendly Property and as a Wildlife Habitat by
the National Wildlife Federation.
At our ceremony on December 17, Jackie Schoettle shared memories of Nan Knox who designed and installed the
original garden at the Boys & Girls Club.
Markes Thomas, the current Director of the club, also shared memories of Nan. Markes grew up in this club
and went to Camp Wekiva with a Garden Club campership as a child.
The birdbath selection and installation was done in partnership with the Master Gardener's of Broward
County. Our hope is to continue our partnership and establish a monthly garden education program for
interested children at the club.
