Author and teacher Linda
Weaver Clarke will present a
family legacy writing workshop
on Thursday, February 26,
2015 from 3:00 PM until 5:00
PM in the Library Events
Center of the Lincoln Parish
Library. This workshop is free,
and there is no advanced
registration required.
Participants will learn the most
important elements of writing
their family history or autobiography, as well as find out how
to get their books published, edited, and ready for print. “It’s
important to teach our children their heritage. Each of us has a
story from our ancestors or even our own story to tell. It’s up to
us to write these experiences down,” says author Linda Weaver
Clarke: “Make your ancestors come alive on paper and make
your family legacy something your children will be proud of,”
Clarke continues.
Linda Weaver Clarke, lecturer and author, travels throughout
the United States to present this workshop to libraries. She
has traveled to seventeen states and presented over 450
workshops. Mary Jo Gohlke, Adult Programming Coordinator
for Stockton Library, wrote: “Ms Clarke appeals to genealogists
and aspiring authors. I was terribly impressed! The people
were genuinely attuned to what she presents. She knows
her subject and can present it wonderfully. She is thorough
and professional, yet she strikes just the right chord with her
audience.”

Hey Boo: Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird Film Screening
Tuesday, February 24 @ 6PM
Library Events Center
The Lincoln Parish Library will host a special film screening of
Hey Boo: Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird on Tuesday,
February 24 at 6:00 PM in the Library Events Center. This
documentary film by Mary McDonagh Murphy explores the
phenomenon To Kill a Mockingbird and unravels some of the
mysteries around the novelist’s life, including why she never
published again. Following the screening, cast members from
Ruston Community Theatre’s To Kill A Mockingbird will discuss
their roles and perform a short reading from the play. This
screening is free and open to the public.
At publication, Harper Lee’s first and only novel, To Kill a
Mockingbird, was instantly a beloved classic. The film version,
starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, won a trio of Academy
Awards. Luminaries like Tom Brokaw list the novel among their alltime favorite books, and Oprah Winfrey calls it “our national novel.”
It is still required reading in most classrooms and sells nearly a
million copies every year—many more than The Catcher in the
Rye, The Great Gatsby, or Of Mice and Men. Hey, Boo: Harper
Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird chronicles how Lee was able
to write such a work, the context and history of the Deep South
where it is set, Lee’s family background, and the social change the
novel inspired after its publication. Tom Brokaw, Rosanne Cash,
Wally Lamb, Anna Quindlen, Richard Russo, Scott Turow, Oprah
Winfrey, Andrew Young and others reflect on the novel’s power,
influence, and popularity and the many ways it has shaped their
lives and careers.
Although Lee has not given an interview since 1964, Murphy’s
reporting, research, and rare interviews with the author’s friends
and 99-year-old sister Alice add new details and never-before-seen
documents and photos to the remarkable story of the Mockingbird
phenomenon. Many speak on the record for the first time ever and
share intimate recollections, anecdotes, and biographical details,
including new information about Lee’s tumultuous friendship with
Truman Capote.
Mary McDonagh Murphy is an independent filmmaker and
the author of Scout, Atticus & Boo: A Celebration of To Kill a
Mockingbird, published by Harper Collins. Murphy was a producer
for CBS News for twenty years and won six Emmy Awards for
this work. Her other documentaries include Cry for Help, a movie
about adolescent suicide and depression which aired nationally
on PBS in 2009, and Digital Days, narrated by Tom Brokaw, about
the Internet’s impact on the newspaper industry for the Associated
Press.

REJECT: Film Screening and
Panel Discussion
Thursday, February 5 @ 6:00 PM
Library Events Center
A special film screening
and panel discussion of the
documentary “REJECT” will
be held at the Lincoln Parish
Library Events Center on
Thursday, February 5 at 6:00
p.m. This event is made
possible by the Lincoln Parish
Library, the Louisiana Tech
University School of Human
Ecology and Center for
Children and Families.
The feature-length
documentary REJECT takes
an in-depth look at the science
of social rejection. REJECT
takes a science-based and
solution-oriented look at the
roots of bullying behavior and
violent behavior against self or
others. The film aims to raise
public consciousness about
the serious and potentially
lethal consequences of
interpersonal rejection in its
many forms—peer bullying,
parental neglect (or abuse),
Lincoln Parish Library
racial discrimination, and
other forms of social rejection
across all age groups. It
speaks to parents, teachers,
administrators, organizations
that train teachers, coaches,
mental health professionals,
clergy, counselors, juvenile
judges, office managers—
that is, anyone entrusted with
influence over others and in a
position to foster acceptance
and inclusion.
Two personal stories woven
throughout the film take
profoundly different paths. We
meet the family of 17-yearold Eric Mohat, a boy from a
town outside of Cleveland who
was bullied in his math class
every day for seven months
until he finally took his own
life. His parents, Jan and Bill,
along with one of his best
friends Brandon, try to piece
together the chain of events
that might have driven Eric to
commit suicide. In Stillwater,
Oklahoma, we meet 5-yearold Justin, the son of Mexican
immigrants. He has already
been labeled a troublemaker at
school, if not a “bully,” landing
in the principal’s office every
day until he is kicked out of
kindergarten. He finds himself
in a new classroom under the
watchful eye of teacher Terry
Varnell, who understands
that Justin needs boundaries,
and more importantly, to feel
accepted.
Following the screening, a
panel of experts will provide
additional insight into the
film and answer questions.
Members of the panel include:
Dr. Amanda W. Harrist,
Ph.D., is a professor in
the Department of Human
Development and Family
Science at Oklahoma State
University. Dr. Harrist received
her Ph.D. in Human Ecology
and a concentration in child
development from University
of Tennesee. Dr. Harrist directs
the The Social Development
Lab (SDL) at OSU. Research

Decalcomania
Decalomania was a technique that
artists such as Oscar Dominguez
and Max Ernst used to create
impromptu paintings controlled
largely by chance. They would apply
paint to a smooth surface and press
it onto a canvas or piece of paper.
Much like an ink blot test, they would
search for hidden imagery and
develop it into a finished painting.
Come try to make your own painting
using this unique technique.
