Oak Street • Reardan WA 99029 • 509-796-2315 almo st Washington State awards $700,000 in grants to seven design regions for Accountable Communities of Health Communities will continue their work of designing a structure for regional health improvement. OLYMPIA – The Health Care Authority today announced awards of $100,000 each, pending federal approval, to fund seven design regions to prepare for designation as Accountable Communities of Health (ACHs). The seven selected design regions are aligned with the state’s Medicaid Regional Service Areas (RSAs), which were designated in November 2014 and will take hold in April 2016. • Southwest Regional Health Alliance, representing the Southwest Washington RSA: Clark, Skamania and Klickitat counties. • Better Health Together, representing the Spokane Regional Service Area: Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Spokane and Adams counties. • Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, representing the Pierce County RSA. • Greater Columbia ACH, representing the Greater Columbia RSA: Kittitas, Yakima, Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Whitman, Garfield and Asotin counties. • Chelan-Douglas Health District, representing the North Central RSA: Okanogan, Chelan, Douglas and Grant counties. • King County, serving the King County RSA. • Kitsap Public Health Department, representing the Peninsula RSA: Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties. Accountable Communities of Health are one component of Healthier Washington, our state’s effort to help ensure better health, better care, and lower costs for Washington residents. ACHs bring together public and private entities to work on shared regional health goals. They are based on the idea that health is more than health care; social determinants of health, such as education and housing, must be considered when addressing population health. Funding for the ACH design work comes from a Federal State Innovation Model grant, which Washington won in December. The $65 million, four-year grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation helps implement key elements of Healthier Washington, including ACHs. “ACHs are our state’s way of supporting community empowerment and accountability for regional health improvement and innovation,” HCA Director Dorothy Teeter said. “This design phase gives regions the opportunity to flesh out how ACHs will be governed and how they can achieve transformative health outcomes through collaboration.” In addition to the seven design regions, two pilot ACHs received $150,000 each in January to test ACH governance structures and decision-making processes, engagement strategies and administrative support functions. The two pilot ACHs are on a slightly accelerated path and will share information and outcomes to inform the design regions. The two pilot ACHs are: • Cascade Pacific Action Alliance, representing the Timberlands and Thurston-Mason RSAs • North Sound ACH, representing the North Sound RSA. The pilots are funded with state dollars and called for under House Bill 2572. February 04, 2015 Lincoln Advertiser For Rent: Upstairs, 1 bdrm apartment, $500/ month, all utilities included. These are the flags draped on the caskets at military honor funerals and then donated by the families to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7480 and American Legion, Post 46. Betty Beebe remembers that the first time there were 25 flags, this year there were 150 and should have been more. We are working to get all of our flags up and flying next year, but a lot of them are in need of repair or replacement. At the Memorial Day Program it was announced that these flags are $70 to replace and a plea to the community to help with donations was made. Anyone interested may make their donation out to VFW Post 7480 and mail it to Ed Hendrickson, commander at 43060 Porcupine Bay Rd. N., Davenport 99122. A Memorial Day Service is organized by the VFW and Legion each year, relying on community members to make it happen. The scout troops, several classes (band and P.E.) at the school, the patriotic essay winners, clergy, singers and speakers as well as veterans and members of both Posts and Auxillary all help to honor our fallen heroes. Please join us next year. “A Better Way To Advertise” WANT ADS Deadline: Monday at 3:00 p.m. 15 Words or Less = $5.00 • Additional Words = 10¢ each Mail to. . .PO Box 837, Davenport, WA 99122 Please enclose payment with order. This year’s event, “Put Your Best Boot Forward,” covers the topic of making sense of marketing. This one-day gathering takes place simultaneously in 28 locations throughout Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. Visit the website at www.womeninag.wsu.edu for details about the conference and registration. More and more, producers are asked, “Tell me about your farm.” It’s more important than ever to be able to talk about it positively and with passion, no matter what you grow or how you sell it. Everyone has a story that needs to be told to promote agriculture, according to WSU Douglas County Extension Director and chair of the conference, Margaret Viebrock. The format of this conference enables us to offer our headline speakers at all locations, while still tailoring the conference content for each region. “Last year, nearly 600 women attended,” said Viebrock. “Many attendees reported it was the best conference for women producers because it presented practical information they could use right away.” The lineup for the day includes a local farmer and marketing specialist. Walla Walla farmer, Emily Asmus, will showcase how her farm, Welcome Table Farms, keeps their “brand” fresh to build interest and loyalty. Learn what tools and techniques are critical to her marketing plan. Marketing expert, Erica Mills, Claxon Marketing, believes every woman can – and should – have a consistently compelling way to describe her farm business. She knows this isn’t easy and will help farms of all shapes and sizes tackle this tough challenge. Using proven tools that have been pressure tested by thousands of users, participants will learn a simple 3-step marketing method and create a marketing action plan that gets results. “In addition to telling a compelling story as part of a marketing plan, this conference will help provide ways to inform decision makers, non-farmers and community members about best management practices,” Viebrock added. This conference is designed for women who have been farming for years, as well as new and aspiring farmers. Supporting spouses, students, interns or people who own an agriculture-related business are also welcome. Scholarships are available for aspiring farmers, college agriculture students and 4-H and FFA members interested in an agriculture-related career. The conference registration fee is $30, but if you register between January 10 and February 13, you will receive the early bird special of $25. The conference registration fee includes the workshop, light breakfast, lunch and conference materials. Persons with a disability requiring special accommodations while participating in this program may contact Margaret Viebrock at the email address listed above. 2015 Women in Agriculture Conference Locations: Colville, WA;WSU Steven County Extension, 986 S. But when it comes to details about the life of St. Valentine, legend often supersedes fact. As you celebrate this Valentine’s Day, find out the truth about the man for whom the day is named, as well as some other intriguing facts about history’s most romantic holiday. 1. The St. Valentine who inspired the holiday may have been two different men. Officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, St. Valentine is known to be a real person who died around A.D. 270. However, his true identity was questioned as early as A.D. 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who referred to the martyr and his acts as “being known only to God.” One account from the 1400s describes Valentine as a temple priest who was beheaded near Rome by the emperor Claudius II for helping Christian couples wed. A different account claims Valentine was the Bishop of Terni, also martyred by Claudius II on the outskirts of Rome. Because of the similarities of these accounts, it’s thought they may refer to the same person. Enough confusion surrounds the true identity of St. Valentine that the Catholic Church discontinued liturgical veneration of him in 1969, though his name remains on its list of officially recognized saints. 2. In all, there are about a dozen St. Valentines, plus a pope. The saint we celebrate on Valentine’s Day is known officially as St. Valentine of Rome in order to differentiate him from the dozen or so other Valentines on the list. Because “Valentinus”—from the Latin word for worthy, strong or powerful—was a popular moniker between the second and eighth centuries A.D., several martyrs over the centuries have carried this name. The official Roman Catholic roster of saints shows about a dozen who were named Valentine or some variation thereof. The most recently beatified Valentine is St. Valentine Berrio-Ochoa, a Spaniard of the Dominican order who traveled to Vietnam, where he served as bishop until his beheading in 1861. Pope John Paul II canonized Berrio-Ochoa in 1988. There was even a Pope Valentine, though little is known about him except that he served a mere 40 days around A.D. 827. 3. Valentine is the patron saint of beekeepers and epilepsy, among many other things. Saints are certainly expected to keep busy in the afterlife. Their holy duties include interceding in earthly affairs and entertaining petitions from living souls. In this respect, St. Valentine has wide-ranging spiritual responsibilities. People call on him to watch over the lives of lovers, of course, but also for interventions regarding beekeeping and epilepsy, as well as the plague, fainting and traveling. As you might expect, he’s also the patron saint of engaged couples and happy marriages. 4. You can find Valentine’s skull in Rome. The flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine is on display in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. In the early 1800s, the excavation of a catacomb near Rome yielded skeletal remains and other relics now associated with St. Valentine. As is customary, these bits and pieces of the late saint’s body have subsequently been distributed to reliquaries around the world. You’ll find other bit of St. Valentine’s skeleton on display in the Czech Republic, Ireland, Scotland, England and France. 5. Chaucer may have invented Valentine’s Day. The medieval English poet Geoffrey Chaucer often took liberties with history, placing his poetic characters into fictitious historical contexts that he represented as real. No record exists of romantic celebrations on Valentine’s Day prior to a poem Chaucer wrote around 1375. In his work “Parliament of Foules,” he links a tradition of courtly love with the celebration of St. Valentine’s feast day–an association that didn’t exist until after his poem received widespread attention. The poem refers to February 14 as the day birds (and humans) come together to find a mate. When Chaucer wrote, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate,” he may have invented the holiday we know today. 6. You can celebrate Valentine’s Day several times a year. Because of the abundance of St. Valentines on the Roman Catholic roster, you can choose to celebrate the saint multiple times each year. Besides February 14, you might decide to celebrate St. Valentine of Viterbo on November 3. Or maybe you want to get a jump on the traditional Valentine celebration by feting St. Valentine of Raetia on January 7. Women might choose to honor the only female St. Valentine (Valentina), a virgin martyred in Palestine on July 25, A.D. 308. The Eastern Orthodox Church officially celebrates St. Valentine twice, once as an elder of the church on July 6 and once as a martyr on July 30. 12 February 04, 2015 Lincoln Advertiser Surplus Property Lincoln County Fire Protection District No. 3, Odessa, Washington has declared the following to be surplus property: crane with service body.
