The history of this day is somewhat mysterious and diverse, encompassing legends of ancient Roman festivals, to liturgical history, references in Chaucer's medieval poems, through contemporary imagery of hearts, love, Cupid, etc. ART & MUSIC TEENS Wilton Library has often been referred to as the "heart of our community," so February is very special to us. However, truth be told, every day is special at the Library because we truly love what we do to enrich our community. We are also exceedingly grateful for the positive support we in turn receive from you. Whether you use the variety of print and electronic resources we offer, participate in educational or cultural programs, visit our facility, or contribute via our Annual Appeal, we thank you for your loyal patronage. Beyond Words -- Save The Date Friday, May 1, 7 to 11 pm SAVE THE DATE!!! Wilton Library's annual spring benefit, Beyond Words ... Derby Style, will take place on Friday, May 1. Mark your calendars to join us for a festive evening on the eve of the Kentucky Derby featuring great food with a southern flare courtesy of AMG Catering, unique silent and live auctions, entertainment, and much more. Funds raised at Beyond Words will go to the many programs, materials and services of the Library. We are extremely pleased to announce that our honorary chairs are Chris and Tish Brubeck, who have supported the Library in so many ways over the years. Look for more information in the coming weeks. SPECIAL EVENTS Innovation Day -- Call for Exhibitors Saturday, May 30 CALLING ALL MAKERS! Wilton Library's Innovation Day will showcase the work of all kinds and ages of makers - anyone who is embracing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Math) or the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) movement and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Presentations, workshops, and exhibitions we're looking for them all! We particularly encourage those who demonstrate the process of making things or have interactive exhibits. There will be no selling, but exhibitors are free to distribute information or accept orders for their products or services. Applications can be submitted from February 1 to March 31. Makers will be notified by April 15. Acceptance will be based on available space and a balance of topics and exhibitions. Click here to fill out an Innovation Day Exhibitor Application. NEW -- Telescope Lending Program Our newest Innovation Station offering is an Orion 10015 Starblast 4.5 Astro Reflector Telescope, made possible by the Amadeo Family Fund. The telescope can be borrowed for a week to explore and learn about the night sky. It comes in a protective case on wheels and is accompanied by a carrying bag containing 2 telescope eyepieces, binoculars, 3 books, a night sky foldout, LED light on a lanyard, and a Planisphere. Interested patrons can email [email protected] to place a hold on the telescope and schedule a 5-10 minute orientation meeting. AUTHOR TALKS & BOOK GROUPS Author Talk: Jennifer Robson, After the War is Over Monday, February 2, 7 to 8:30 pm The bestselling author of Somewhere in France returns with a tale of class, love, and freedom in which a young woman must find her place in a changed world. In After the War is Over, Jennifer Robson brings readers back into the vivid scenery of post-WWI Britain. Q&A and book signing following the talk. Please register in advance. Winter Poetry: Judson Scruton Thursdays, February 5, 12, 19 & 26, 10:30 am to noon Judson Scruton leads this 4-part Poetry Series exploring The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope. Judson Scruton, M.A., has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities and is currently an Adjunct Professor of English at Fairfield University. Author Talk: Doug and Betty Jones, The Music in My Life Thursday, February 5, 7 to 8:30 pm Wilton resident Betty Jones was past the age of 40 when she ventured into the world of opera. She has performed with the Boston Opera Company, New York City Opera, San Francisco, Chicago Lyric, Seattle, Chautauqua, Washington, etc., as well as companies in Italy, Germany and England. During Betty's career, she has sung many of the principal soprano roles. The Music in My Life will be available for purchase and signing. Please register. Area Author Affair: Laurie Klein, Photographing the Female Form with Digital Infrared Monday, February 9, 6 to 7 pm Laurie Klein elevates the female nude through the use of digital infrared (IR) photography. Using IR-modified cameras, she designs scenes of her models in natural settings that transform them into fairies, nymphs, and goddesses. Books will be available for purchase and signing. ART & MUSIC Focus on Photography Workshop Saturday, February 7, 1 to 3 pm The Wilton Arts Council is hosting a workshop for novice photographers -- youth, high school and novices of all ages are welcome. Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room Gerald Clayton & Dayna Stephens Duo Sunday, February 15, 4 to 5:30 pm Wilton Library is pleased to welcome pianist/composer Gerald Clayton back to the Brubeck Room. Gerald Clayton has established himself as a leading figure in an up-and-coming generation of jazz artists. With this performance, he brings internationally-renowned saxophonist/composer/educator Dayna Stephens. Suggested donation: $10. Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition and Reception: Rachel Bacon Monday, February 23, 6 to 7:30 pm February brings Rachel Bacon to the Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence program. Rachel will prepare an exhibition using family letters spanning the 20th century and four generations, charting a single lifespan and reflecting changes in documentation and communication. Call for Entries - Focus '15 Wilton Arts Council Photography Show Entry drop off: Saturday, February 28, 11:00 am to 4:30 pm & Sunday, March 1, 1:30 to 4:30 pm The Wilton Arts Council will hold its 17th annual photography show, Focus '15, at Wilton Library from March 6-28. SEMINARS & DOCUMENTARIES The Probate Court and You with Judge DePanfilis Tuesday, February 3, 7 to 8:30 pm Join the Honorable Anthony J. DePanfilis for a presentation on what the probate court does for you and your community. Topics will include decedents' estates (wills, taxes); trusts; conservatorships (one of the ways the court assists many of the elderly in the community); commitments (capacity/mental illness); children's matters: adoption, temporary custody, etc., guardianship of the intellectually disabled. New Perspectives Film Series: Sound and Fury Saturday, February 7, 7:30 to 9:30 pm Sound and Fury documents one family's struggle over whether or not to provide two deaf children with cochlear implants, devices that can stimulate hearing. The film was a 2001 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Suggested donation of $5. Refreshments served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker, Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. Please register in advance. WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: The Gilded Age, Culture and Conflict at the End of the 19th Century Now beginning January 31, 4 to 5:30 pm For the eighth time, the Wilton Historical Society and Wilton Library are partnering on an informative scholarly series about an important time in America's history, the end of the 19th century known as the Gilded Age. This series examines a changing nation at a critical juncture. Many of today's issues were beginning to take form such as change vs. status quo; federal vs. state involvement; regulation vs. laissez-faire and more. The five-part series is sponsored by an anonymous donor with individual sponsors for each lecture. The hosts for the series are Louise Herot and Greg Chann. The moderators are Steve Hudspeth and Max Gabrielson sharing the duties. Receptions will follow each of the talks. The lecture locations alternate between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, 224 Danbury Road in Wilton. Mr. Schaller, vice president of Panthera and senior conservationist of the Wildlife Conservation Society, has traveled the globe and helped protect animals as diverse as mountain gorillas, giant pandas, jaguars and Tibetan antelope. Mr. Schaller will be interviewed by international photographer Daryl Hawk. Please register in advance. HEALTH & WELLNESS Breast Cancer Survivors' Support Group Tuesday, February 10, 6 to 8 pm Post-treatment breast cancer survivors are invited to join in this monthly support group held at Wilton Library and presented by The Breast Cancer Survival Center (BCSC). Please register in advance. AARP Driver Safety Class Saturday, February 21, 10 am to 2 pm The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed especially for drivers age 50+. This single session, four-hour course covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with ageing and provides practical techniques on how to adjust. We have held many private parties, luncheons, seminars, conferences, concerts, religious services as well as community events with great success. We offer rooms with capacities ranging from 20 to 155 people. Rates are charged per hour with reduced rates offered for nonprofit organizations. Making It Into A Top College: 10 Steps to Gaining Admission to Selective Colleges and Universities Wednesday, February 4, 7 to 8 pm Howard and Matthew Greene, independent educational consultants and authors of the Greenes' Guides to Educational Planning book series, will present a seminar for high school students and parents focusing on preparation for college admission.
