Our Vision
We will organize our church as a center for:
Spiritual development

Urban mission
Ecumenical cooperation
Our Objectives
We have some unique opportunities due to our Germantown location and
congregational history. These include:
Providing special programs for children and families in the local community
Building a healthy, diverse congregation
Developing an urban mission
Developing a ministry of music and the arts
Using our building and endowment creatively and responsibly
The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown logo seen on the cover of this bulletin represents the multifaceted life of our energized congregation. The cross on the left symbolizes our Living Lord – the foundation upon which we build our faith. The harp in the yellow square represents our rich musical heritage, for
we enjoy celebrating the gift of music in worship, workshops, and concerts. It is important for us to share
music with our community. The dove symbolizes serving – offering educational and mission opportunities through our many outreach activities. People – active and joy-filled – are represented in the red
square on the right. We welcome all people to this church. We are a diverse congregation of many racial,
ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are, indeed, alive, spirit-filled, and caring.
The colors are reflective of the beautiful stained glass windows of the church. In fact, the colors of the
logo were taken directly from The Christmas Window– “Thy light is come” made by Nicola D’Ascenzo
and seen in the southwest corner of the nave.

Psalm 111:1-3,9,10
Leader: Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright,
in the congregation.
People: Great are the works of the LORD,
studied by all who delight in them.
Full of honor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
Leader: God sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name.
People: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever.

AZMON
Awesome and compassionate God, you have loved us with unfailing, selfgiving mercy, but we have not loved you. You constantly call us, but we do
not listen. You ask us to love, but we walk away from neighbors in need,
wrapped up in our own concerns. We condone evil, prejudice, warfare and
greed. God of grace, as you come to us in mercy, we repent in spirit and in
truth, admit our sin, and gratefully receive your forgiveness through Jesus
Christ, our Redeemer. Amen
Assurance of Pardon
†*Congregational Response 420: God of Grace and God of Glory (Verse 4)
Set our feet in lofty places
Gird our lives that they may be
Armored with all Christ-like graces,
Pledged to set all captives free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
That we fail not them nor Thee!
That we fail not them nor Thee!
CWM RHONDDA
†* Sharing the Peace of Christ
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
(As worshipers, we come from diverse experiences and points of view. We have
different racial, educational, and economic backgrounds. Yet we are all one in
Christ. We symbolize this as we exchange with one another, by words and gestures,
signs of peace and reconciliation such as, “The peace of Christ be with you. And
also with you.”)

The First Lesson
Deuteronomy 18:15-20
The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your
own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the
Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: “If I hear
the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will
die.” Then the Lord replied to me: “They are right in what they have said. I will
raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put
my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that
I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak
in my name, I myself will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the
x
name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have
not commanded the prophet to speak—that prophet shall die.”
Leader:
People:
God’s word is a lamp to our feet, and a light to our path.
Thanks be to God!
Gospel Choir: Day and Night Praise

The Lord be praised. From the time that the sun comes up, ‘til the going down of the same. The Lord be
praised.
The Second Lesson
Mark 1:21-28
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as
one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do
with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are,
the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come
out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud
voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one
another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even
the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread
throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD
*Affirmation of Faith: The Confession of 1967
In each time and place, there are particular problems and crises through
which God calls the church to act. The church, guided by the Spirit, humbled by its own complicity and instructed by all attainable knowledge,
seeks to discern the will of God and learn how to obey in these concrete
situations. The following are particularly urgent at the present time.
God has created the peoples of the earth to be one universal family. In his
reconciling love, he overcomes the barriers between brothers and breaks
down every form of discrimination based on racial or ethnic difference,
real or imaginary. The church is called to bring all men to receive and up–
hold one another as persons in all relationships of life: in employment,
housing, education, leisure, marriage, family, church, and the exercise of
political rights. Therefore, the church labors for the abolition of all racial
discrimination and ministers to those injured by it. Congregations, individuals, or groups of Christians who exclude, dominate, or patronize their
fellowmen, however subtly, resist the Spirit of God and bring contempt on
the faith which they profess. Amen
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the
power and the glory forever. Amen.
Offering of Our Gifts and Lives
Offertory: Behold Now, Praise the Lord
Everett Titcomb
Behold now, praise the Lord; all ye servants of the Lord. Ye that by night stand in the house of
the Lord, Even in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and
praise the Lord. Behold now, praise the Lord, ye servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord.
*Congregational Response Doxology

Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

*Charge and Benediction
Leader: Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have
been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another in love, making every effort to
maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
May the grace of God, deeper than our imagination; the strength
of Christ, stronger than our need; and the communion of the
Holy Spirit, richer than our loneliness, guide and sustain
us today and in all our tomorrows.
People: Amen

WELCOME: If you are visiting with us today, please sign the Fellowship Pad at the
end of your pew. We pray the hour will be meaningful to you and you will come and
worship with us again. Everyone is cordially invited to a time of fellowship in the
Longstreth Auditorium following the worship service.
COFFEE HOUR: This week's coffee hour host: Ted and Rosie Walkenhorst & Desiree Whitfield. Next week's host: The Communication and Evangelism Committee.
The Congregational Development and Fellowship Committee would like to thank the
parents of the confirmands for last week’s coffee hour. Did you know that Coffee Hour
is a very important ministry of First Church? Coffee Hour gives friends and members
time to connect with each other over goodies and coffee or tea. We need people to supply the tasty goodies. Please take time to sign up during Coffee Hour this Sunday. If
you do not want to shop for the goodies/munchies, we will do it for you. The CDFC
will provide the half & half and juice. A member of the committee will make the coffee
and assist you with setup and clean up.
OFFERING ENVELOPS for 2015 are on a table in Longstreth Auditorium. Be
sure to pick yours up this morning.
PLEDGE REPORT: It is with great joy that we can report to the congregation that
payments have been received that surpass our 2014 pledge goal. The pledge goal was
$350,000. We received $358,390. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to
God’s work here in Germantown. We are still in need for pledge commitments to support our mission and ministry in 2015. Our pledge goal for 2015 again is $350,000. To
date we have received pledges of $324,839. Thank you everyone.
DINNERS FOR EIGHT: If you want to get to know other members of our congregation and share a good meal, this is just the opportunity for you. Dinners for Eight are
held at someone's home on a Saturday. Each person attending contributes to the meal,
from the main course to a side dish, salad, dessert, bread or beverage. If you are interested in hosting a dinner at your home or would like to be a guest, please let Susan
Mills Farrington know by email [email protected] or call 215-882-2792.
The February date for Dinners for Eight is Saturday, February 28, 2015
FEBRUARY CHALLENGE OFFERING: Keep A Child Alive. Play is so vital to
the development of children. It's how they learn to interact with the world, and develop
the mental, physical and social skills necessary to succeed later in life. But too often
children living with HIV don't get to play. Many are left isolated, stigmatized, even
abandoned. There is nothing so devastating as watching a child struggle. If HIV-positive
children are tested and receive early treatment they can live a healthy life, and do the
things other children take for granted. For the last eleven years, Keep A Child Alive
(KCA) has been on the frontline during the fight against HIV and AIDS. Their work is
growing to include the critical components necessary to support successful, life-long
HIV treatment: comprehensive clinical care, nutritious food and psychosocial support,
all delivered with compassion, dignity and respect. KCA's mission is to realize the end
of AIDS for children and their families by combating the physical, social and economical impacts of HIV. When you make a donation to Keep a Child Alive, you can be sure
that 100% of your gift will go directly to treatment and care for a child at one of our programs. You will have given a child the chance of a happier, healthier life - and the
promise of a future.
