BINGO Night
Friday, January 30
6:00—8:00 PM
Our Mission
By offering an enriched American
curriculum in a challenging, secure,
and diverse environment, the
American School of Yaoundé seeks to
ensure that all students achieve
academic success, demonstrate
critical thinking skills, and become
responsible and compassionate
global citizens.
...Director’s Corner
The AAIE conference is particularly interesting to me, as it affords not only the opportunity to connect
with another international school heads – particularly those who serve schools in this region – but
also because it is a conference where the latest in educational resources and technologies are
showcased, and as such allows me to have up-to-date information about the ways in which we can
enhance learning at ASOY. Because we order our US supplies and resources during the month of
February, the conference is also very well timed.
I hope to see you at this week’s Coffee Morning!
Warm regards,
Sheena
Cela me
Meilleurs voeux,
Sheena

Elementary School Principal’s Corner
International Day, where we celebrate the great diversity of ASOY, is quickly approaching. This year’s
international day will occur on Friday, February 27th from 9:00 until 13:00. However, students
are still required to come to school in time for the regular 8:00 start. The formal program will include
a parade of flags, a guest speaker, and performances from each class on their chosen nation. After the
program, each grade will open up their classroom so you can learn more about their chosen nation.
The great day ends with a potluck lunch where we are able to taste and experience the wonderful food
from countries represented in our community. Families are encouraged to bring in traditional food
from their home country to share with the community. More information about the potluck buffet will
be sent out on Monday, February 9th. In the meantime, should you have questions or concerns, please
contact Mr. Charles Bellomy, the Elementary School Principal and the Chair of the International Day
Committee. The countries that have been selected for presentations and room exhibits are:

“International

MAP TESTING
Why MAP?
This week will begin our January administration of the Northwest Evaluation Association’s
(NWEA) MAP test. Over the course of the next two weeks students in grades 3 – 8 will be
assessed in Reading, Language Usage, Math, and Science. I would like to address a few
common questions that are often asked concerning these tests.
Perhaps the most common question is “what is the purpose of this test?” The answer lies in
the words that make up the acronym MAP. It stands for the Measurement of Academic
Progress. These tests provide us a statistically reliable measurement of student’s academic
progress, in other words, how much they have learned since the last time they took the test.
The scores are normed based upon millions of students who have taken the test.
Another question I often hear is “what do these scores mean”. I think the answer to that
question should focus on what the scores tell us. We can get some detailed information
about what skills your child is mastering and which ones they are still working towards.
The results also help us as a school and individual teachers to adjust instruction to meet the
needs of students or evaluate the quality and effectiveness of our programs.
There are some important things to remember about MAP. While these tests are important
and we want students to give their best effort, we do not want students to stress or see these
tests as a measurement of their success or abilities. The results are only one piece of
information that teachers use to evaluate student progress. They cannot be used in isolation
to make assumptions or evaluations of students or teachers. They do not determine
whether your child passes or fails a class or whether they are promoted to the next grade
level.
If you have any concerns or questions about the test or just want to understand more, please
feel free to contact me and I will be happy to work to answer any of your questions.
