MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS
The entire history of the Jewish people
is directed toward one goal: that God
might be glorified through the chosen
people. Christians, too, are called to “do
everything for the glory of God.” In today’s
scriptures Paul reminds us that the best
way for us to glorify God is to seek to
benefit “the many,” as Christ did when he
shed his blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one
way the Jews sought to benefit the many,
by keeping lepers and leprosy away from the chosen people.
Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper, who immediately
re‑enters the community to spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both Jesus and the
leper fulfill their calling to glorify the God who fills us “with
the joy of salvation.”

La historia completa del pueblo judío va
dirigida hacia una meta: que Dios sea glorificado por medio del pueblo escogido. Los
cristianos también están llamados a “hacer
todo para la gloria de Dios”. En las Escrituras
de hoy Pablo nos recuerda que la mejor manera
que tenemos para glorificar a Dios es buscar el
beneficio de “todos” tal como Cristo hizo cuando
derramó su sangre por toda la humanidad.
La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en que
los judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos,
manteniendo a los leprosos y la lepra alejados del pueblo
escogido. Jesús encuentra una manera mejor: cura al leproso,
que inmediatamente retorna a la comunidad para difundir la
Buena Nueva de Jesús a todo el que le escuche. De este modo
tanto Jesús como el leproso cumplen con su llamado de
glorificar al Dios que nos llena “con la alegría de la
salvación”.

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
The First Reading of Leviticus and the Gospel of Mark
serve as reminder of the compassion of Jesus in contrast to the
Law held by the Jewish people, a people who lived by the law-some laws having profound negative impacts on the person.
A person who had skin disorders such as leprosy was seen as
cursed and unclean. The priests held the power to declare a
person “clean” or “unclean” and if unclean, the person was
alienated from the community and had to live apart. Like the
garments they wore these were “rent” or torn as was the
physical schism or separation the person had to endure away
from his loved ones and the community. One can only imagine
the anguished felt and experienced by a banished person.
Jesus, in Mark’s Gospel, reveals a quite different approach in
his efforts to serve the people. Jesus goes totally against the
norm of the day. He welcomes and touches the people that are
considered “outsiders and absolutely unclean.” Jesus recognizes
the dignity of the person by his healing and the unlocking the
powers within them for the sake of others. One almost gets a
sense of “prophetic outrage” expressed by Jesus for those who
are outcasts. The person with leprosy begs Jesus to make him
clean, and Jesus “moved with pity” touches him and says “I will
do it. . .be made clean.” Jesus Christ is not a symbol of meekness,
but an example of the fierce love God has for His people who
respond as Christians to Jesus’ word.
Let us undertake the work of Christ to serve all who are
suffering, alone, anguished, without shelter or who feel excluded
from the community. Let us reach out to them and bring them
comfort and relief. To be a Christian is to respond to Jesus’
word with fidelity, whether that word is “Be made clean” or
“Tell no one anything” as Jesus did to those whom he healed.

La primera lectura del Levítico y el Evangelio de san Marcos
sirven para recordarnos la compasión de Jesucristo en
contraste con la ley, celebrada por el pueblo judío, un pueblo
que vivia para la ley--algunas de estas leyes tenían impactosprofundos negativos sobre las personas. Los leprosos eran
considerados como malditos y sucios. Los sacerdotes tenían el
poder de declarar a una persona "limpia" o "impura" y si era
impura, tenía que vivir alejada de la comunidad. Sus prendas
de vestir eran rasgadas como señal de separación de sus seres
queridos y de su comunidad. Uno no puede imaginarse la angustia que sufría la persona desterrada. Jesucristo en el Evangelio de san Marcos, revela un enfoque muy diferente en sus
esfuerzos para servir al pueblo. Jesús va totalmente en contra
de la norma del día. Él le da la bienvenida y toca a las personas
que se consideran "los desterrados y absolutamente sucios."
Jesucristo reconoce la dignidad de la persona por su sanación
y el desbloqueo de los poderes dentro de ellas para el bien de
otros. Uno casi puede hacerse una idea de la "indignación
profética" expresada por Jesucristo para aquellos que están

que están sufriendo, los que están solos, angustiados, sin abrigo
o que se sienten excluidos de la comunidad. Lleguemos hasta
ellos y llevemosles consuelo y alivio. Ser cristiano es responder
a la palabra de Jesucristo con fidelidad, ya sea llevando las
palabras: "Queda limpio" o "No se lo digas a nadie" como lo
hizo Jesucristo a quienes sanó. Que el Señor Bueno los bendiga
siempre.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Lent, the Church’s annual pre-baptismal
retreat, prepares us to gather around
the Easter font, renew our baptismal
vows, and receive new life from the
water as the elect are plunged into
Christ’s death and resurrection. This
core meaning is more or less available,
depending on whether we journey with
catechumens in the parish and on the
vigor of our liturgical celebration of the
Triduum. Some persist in seeing Lent
as a lonely journey in the wilderness;
yet this week we enter the Lenten fast
in solidarity with one another. The
smudged foreheads you will spy
throughout Ash Wednesday on buses,
street corners, and supermarket aisles
remind you that you are hardly alone
in your desire to enact a spring cleaning
regime for your spiritual life.
Long ago, this kind of repentance
was available to Christians only once.
Ashes and sackcloth were not raiment
for a day, but permanent habits for
public sinners. Fasting became a way
of life, and if they sinned severely
again, there was no hope of restored
communion. Happily, this system did
not endure. It produced reluctant
Christians who even held back from
baptism, like St. Augustine did, out
of fear. Today we have recovered an
ancient tradition that conversion and
repentance are constant themes on
life’s journey, and that Lent is an annual
opportunity to revive our baptismal
identity, both as individuals and
communities.

Por medio de la reconciliación con Dios,
Jesús sana a los enfermos, marginalizados
y hasta sus propios enemigos. Este poder
de perdonar pecados Jesús mismo lo
encarga a su Iglesia, infundiendo su
Espíritu sobre los primeros discípulos
(Juan 20:22-23).
Según el Símbolo (Credo) de los
Apóstoles, los cristianos creemos en el
“perdón de los pecados”. Esta creencia
se relaciona con creer en el Espíritu
Santo, la Iglesia, la comunión de los
santos, la resurrección del cuerpo y la
vida eterna. En el perdón de los pecados,
el Espíritu Santo manifiesta su continua
presencia y acción en la Iglesia y comunión
de los santos. Quienes reciben el perdón
de los pecados mediante la celebración
del Bautismo o del sacramento de la
Reconciliación, están preparados para la
resurrección y la vida eterna.
El perdón de los pecados manifiesta el
poder de Cristo, del Espíritu Santo y de la
Iglesia. Los cristianos estamos llamados
al perdón; perdonando, así como deseamos
ser perdonados. Perdonando, como
Jesucristo.

TALLER DE ORACIÓN Y VIDA
LUNES—9:15 AM & 7:00 PM
¿Sabes dialogar con Dios? Los talleres de
Oración y Vida son un servicio para aprender
y profundizar en el arte de orar. Se aprende
a orar de una manera ordenada, variada y
progresiva a través de 15 sesiones donde la
persona se sana y libera de angustias,
miedos, tristezas y ansiedades. Si no sabes
relacionarte con el Señor ésta es la oportunidad
para aprender. El taller empezó el Lunes, 9
de Feb a las 7:00 pm en el Salón No. 2.
Tendremos un taller por las mañanas a las
9:15 que empezó también el 9 de Feb. Para

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
EACH FRIDAY DURING LENT
There will be Stations of the
Cross every Friday during Lent
beginning February 20th. The
stations will be prayed in Spanish at
6:15 p.m. and in English at 7:00 p.m.
Tendremos el Via-Crucis en Español todos
los Viernes durante la Cuaresma a las 6:15 pm.
Empezaremos el 20 de Febrero.
